Traveling abroad is as easy for the wealthy as going out for a stroll is for the poor. Tang Lan had the driver retrieve Fei Hu's passport from City A, and within two days, she arranged their visas through a contact. The night before their departure, she gave the nanny, Xiao Lan, some money to accompany Fei Hu to the largest shopping mall in Shanghai to pick out a few outfits. While shopping, Fei Hu put some thought into it; he knew that this time he needed not only to look good but also to wear durable clothes, as this trip would be more intense than previous fights.
When Fei Hu and Xiao Lan returned, Tang Lan was waiting for them in the living room. As soon as she saw Fei Hu, she cheerfully asked, "What kind of clothes did you buy? Show me!"
One set, two sets... The nanny laid out each piece of clothing on the sofa, even displaying the two pairs of underwear that Fei Hu had chosen. Tang Lan examined each item, and when she saw the green four-pocket jacket, she pinched the thick fabric and shook her head slightly, saying, "This jacket is too sturdy! It won't be very comfortable to wear."
Before Fei Hu could respond, Xiao Lan interjected, "This outfit was personally chosen by Brother Tiger, and this green military pants too; Brother Tiger said he would need them." As she spoke, she unfolded the pants, which were just as sturdy as the jacket.
Tang Lan smiled and said, "Very good. It looks like you're well-prepared. Everyone should get some rest; we will set off early tomorrow." After saying this, Tang Lan called over nanny Xiao Lin to give her several instructions.
Seeing that he had nothing else to do, Fei Hu went upstairs early. Back in his room, he packed all his clothes into a small suitcase he had just bought today. He really liked this type of suitcase; he had seen it many times before but always thought it was too expensive to buy. Since someone else was paying today, he didn't hesitate to take it; after all, Xiao Lan had told him that everything was accounted for.
Just as he lay down on the bed and turned on the TV, his phone rang. When Fei Hu saw that it was Yingzi calling, he felt a jolt of surprise. This card was issued in City A and was currently roaming; he had been thinking about switching to a local Shanghai card but had forgotten to do so today. After hesitating for a moment, he answered the call. His first words were: "Yingzi, let's keep it brief; I might not have any money left on this card."
"Look at you! You go abroad without even activating your phone plan. If anything happens, it would be more convenient to use it. But don’t worry about that; I’ve activated your phone for twenty-four hours because I decided to be generous today. Not only did I add two thousand yuan to your account, but I also activated international calling for you—just use it freely," Yingzi said cheerfully over the phone.
Fei Hu couldn't help but slap his forehead and said, "Oh! Yingzi is so thoughtful; thank you! When we meet next time, I’ll definitely treat you to a big meal. How are things on your end? Are you okay?" Fei Hu asked with concern about Yingzi's situation in City A.
"Just take care of yourself. We’re doing fine here; besides, even if something happens, there are plenty of us around to look out for each other. You need to be careful though. Grandpa mentioned that there are Dragon Tiger Gang members in Da Nang, Vietnam. If you run into any trouble, look for someone called Gecko; if he sees any Dragon Tiger Gang insignia, he'll definitely help you. Do you understand?" Yingzi instructed over the phone.
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu felt reassured and quickly replied, "Please thank Grandpa for me and thank you for your concern." Hearing Fei Hu being so polite made Yingzi chat with him for a while longer before finally hanging up the call.
It was quite strange. As soon as Yingzi's call ended, Fei Hu received several calls in a row. It seemed like they had all coordinated their calls, and every caller started with, "I called you, but the line was busy. Is your phone broken?" Fei Hu could only laugh it off. First, Yingzi called, and they exchanged some caring words. Just after hanging up, Bald Zhang called to inform Fei Hu that everything was fine and that Zhang Jia had returned; she even asked about Fei Hu.
The last call surprisingly came from Xia Yan, who sounded very upset on the phone, leaving Fei Hu momentarily stunned. It turned out that Xia Yan was jealous of Sister Ju. Although nothing had happened between them that night, they still gravitated toward that topic.
After hanging up, Fei Hu couldn't help but chuckle. It turned out that Sister Ju wanted to check on Fei Hu but didn't have his phone number, so she asked Xia Yan for it. However, Xia Yan tricked her into revealing the truth, and unexpectedly, instead of getting Fei Hu's number, Sister Ju got scolded by Xia Yan. Hearing this made Fei Hu want to laugh.
Tomorrow he would be heading to Vietnam, and Fei Hu wanted to make a few calls. Among those he wanted to contact were one or two people he felt a bit uneasy about. One was Ye Xiaofei, whom he hadn't been able to reach, and the other was Sun Li. Regardless of the circumstances, Fei Hu's ability to settle in A City was closely tied to her, and she was also his first woman.
Holding the phone in his hand and weighing it back and forth, he couldn't resist any longer and dialed Sun Li's number. From her voice on the other end, it was clear that she was in a good mood as she laughed and asked, "Hey! Fei Hu, what made you think of calling me today? I thought the sun might rise from the west!"
"I didn't want to call either, but I just couldn't help myself," Fei Hu replied. "So, are you still working the night shift? You need to take care of yourself; I've heard that working nights isn't good for your health." These words slipped out casually; he hadn't really thought about them. It seemed that Sun Li still held a certain place in his heart.
Sun Li paused for a moment before saying on the phone, "Thank you for your concern; this makes me happier than finding gold. I won't be working nights anymore; after all, I'm a director now. Hey! I've noticed you've changed a lot! When did you learn to care about others? It's a bit unbelievable. But let me remind you: don't get too emotional about me; I'm like a block of ice—can't be warmed up; if it gets too hot, it'll just melt away and leave nothing behind. Understand?"
Fei Hu hated Sun Li's nonsense about her anti-marriage stance. Whenever he heard such things from her, he lost interest in the conversation quickly. He exchanged a few casual remarks with her before finding an excuse to hang up. It seemed they could only remain parallel lines in life; true intimacy would never be possible.
After hanging up with Sun Li, Fei Hu sent two text messages to Chen Hui and Wang Yun, informing them that he would be going to Vietnam soon and suggesting they all get together when he returned. After sending the messages, Fei Hu felt much more at ease. Having been out for over a year now, he had only met this many people; although they were mostly women, he felt content.
In a good mood and not feeling lazy about sleeping, while Fei Hu was still dreaming in bed, the phone by his bedside rang. He picked it up to hear Xiao Lan calling him down for breakfast. Only then did he open his eyes and notice light streaming in through the curtains. It was morning! Fei Hu hurriedly got up, put on his new clothes, and quickly washed up. Once everything was ready, he rushed downstairs with his suitcase.
As soon as he reached the first floor, Tang Lan's driver approached him and took the suitcase from his hands saying, "Let me take that! You should hurry to eat breakfast; otherwise you'll get stuck in traffic."
Fei Hu then realized that Tang Lan had already left; only Xiao Lin stood in the restaurant waiting for him to eat. Fei Hu ran over and asked while eating, "Has Tang Zong already left?"
"Yes, she is waiting for you in the car, but it's okay, there's still time. Take your time, the traffic is heavy today, just like it was that day, not just this morning," Xiao Lin gently reassured Fei Hu.
Although he said this, Fei Hu felt it was a bit wrong to make Tang Lan wait in the car. He hastily took a couple of bites and waved goodbye to Xiao Lin, saying, "See you," before running out of the hall.
In the business Buick, Tang Lan and Xiao Lan were already seated in the back row. Fei Hu opened the passenger door and jumped in, softly saying, "Sorry, I stayed up late last night and overslept."
"It's okay, there's still time," Tang Lan replied lightly from the back seat.
Seeing that they were almost ready, the driver started the car.
The morning scenery was indeed beautiful; on both sides of the road leading to the airport were lush trees and flowers, with some unknown little birds flitting about on the branches. People rushing to the airport had increased their speed a bit, but it was still relatively smooth. The driver was an experienced one; he understood people well and turned on some soft music in the car, at a volume that was just right and very pleasant to listen to.
"Is this your first time going so far, Fei Hu?" Tang Lan gently asked from the back seat.
Fei Hu tilted his head slightly and smiled, saying, "I've been to Hong Kong twice, but I haven't really gone anywhere further." In that moment when he turned back, he noticed something unusual about Xiao Lan next to Tang Zong. Was she there to see Tang Zong off? It didn't seem like it; her outfit looked like she had transformed into a different person. Although Xiao Lan wasn't exceptionally beautiful, when she dressed up, she looked particularly attractive. She wore a white short-sleeve shirt paired with casual sports pants and seemed to be wearing a pair of world-renowned brand sneakers.
Where was she going? Was she just seeing Tang Lan off? Fei Hu felt very puzzled. Another possibility was that she was hitching a ride and would have the driver take her somewhere on the way back. Thinking of this made Fei Hu feel conflicted.
At Shanghang International Airport, although it wasn't as grand as A City's magnificent spectacle, its design and construction style still caught people's eyes. The driver parked in front of the terminal and took their luggage out. Unexpectedly, Xiao Lan also got out of the car, which left Fei Hu with another question mark in his mind.
