At the Fifth People's Hospital in City A, which could be considered a large hospital, the management was surprisingly chaotic. Fei Hu was not pleased; he was naturally someone who liked to meddle in others' affairs. He quickly stepped over to a middle-aged woman, bent down, and helped her up, asking, "Auntie, what exactly is going on? Please explain clearly so I can see if I can help you."
The middle-aged woman was delighted to have someone willing to assist her. She wiped her tears and sobbed, "Young man, my husband has acute appendicitis, and the doctor said he needs surgery immediately; otherwise, it could be life-threatening. But we are poor and can't gather the surgery fee right away. This morning, I just rushed here from my hometown with over two thousand yuan that relatives and friends lent me. Just now, when I was about to pay, I realized the money was gone. What am I supposed to do?" As she spoke, she began to cry again.
Fei Hu patted her shoulder and comforted her, "Don't panic. Regardless of the situation, your husband's surgery must be done. Think carefully; are you sure you lost the money here?"
"How could I not be sure? I kept my hand on my pocket the whole time. Just a moment ago, someone bumped into me, and I leaned forward to avoid falling. In that brief moment, when I steadied myself and checked my pocket, the money was gone. You tell me how I'm supposed to live!" The middle-aged woman cried out again, surrounded by many onlookers who were watching but none willing to speak up for her.
Fei Hu waved at a security guard standing at the back of the line who was directing people to queue properly. Reluctantly, the guard approached. He was a short and stout man in his forties. When he reached Fei Hu, he smirked and said loudly, "Comrade, show some manners; why are you waving your hand? You can see what my job is—security. My name is Hou Xiaodong. Don't be so rude; just say what you need."
Fei Hu suppressed his irritation and tried to remain calm as he explained, "This auntie's two thousand yuan was stolen just now. Could you please help? She borrowed this money for her husband's surgery."
Upon hearing this, security guard Hou Xiaodong rolled his eyes and dismissively replied, "Call the police! What good would it do to ask me for help? Besides, if she can't keep track of her own money in such a crowd, how can I possibly watch over everything?"
Fei Hu felt his anger rising but knew he couldn't lose control in this situation. He said patiently, "You may not care about this matter personally, but you are responsible for safety here. Aren't there plenty of cameras in this hall? Checking them should clarify things. Reporting it is also an option; however, time is critical for her husband..."
"Enough already! Who do you think you are to come here and give orders? If she lost her money, it's none of your business! Just go back to what you were doing and stop interfering with my work!" Hou Xiaodong cursed as he turned to leave. The onlookers shook their heads in frustration.
Seeing that even the security guard was unhelpful made the middle-aged woman burst into tears again. Fei Hu's previously contained anger flared up like gasoline being poured on a fire. He stepped forward and extended his right hand, coldly commanding, "Bring your supervisor out here and give this auntie an explanation!"
"Hey! Are you out of your mind? Do you think I'm just going to go fetch someone because you say so?" Hou Xiaodong retorted defiantly as he puffed out his chest and attempted to shove past Fei Hu. However, instead of pushing Fei Hu aside, he ended up staggering backward several steps due to the impact. The crowd around them gasped in unison at the unexpected turn of events.
Hou Xiaodong finally realized he had encountered a strong opponent, but with so many people watching him, how could he back down? He turned his hat around so the brim faced backward, then lunged forward, wrapping his arms around Fei Hu's waist, trying to push him away. However, he didn't understand who he was dealing with. Hou Xiaodong's feet flailed on the ground as he shouted, "Come on, I'm going to knock you down! I don't believe it!"
But Fei Hu's legs were like nails driven into the ground, completely unmoving. Hou Xiaodong's comical antics drew loud laughter from the crowd. Just as he realized he was indeed no match for Fei Hu and was about to back off, Fei Hu reached out and grabbed the belt at his waist, lifting him up effortlessly.
The people in line had long been annoyed by his behavior and couldn't help but applaud. This was a hospital, and such a commotion had already attracted the attention of the management. At that moment, a middle-aged man in a white coat approached, accompanied by four security guards, parting the crowd as he came. He sternly shouted, "Enough of this nonsense! This is a hospital; what are you making a fuss about?"
Fei Hu then released his grip, and Hou Xiaodong stood up with a flushed face. He almost stumbled but quickly regained his balance. The crowd laughed even harder at this spectacle. However, Hou Xiaodong reacted quickly and decided to play the victim. He stood tall and shouted, "Director Chen, he's hitting people!"
Hou Xiaodong's shout drew a chorus of boos from the crowd. Fei Hu remained silent; he wanted to see what kind of attitude Director Chen would have before deciding how to respond.
"What's going on here, young man? This is a hospital and a public place; you can't just hit people like that. You should come with us for a moment; discussing this here isn't appropriate with so many people watching," Director Chen adjusted his glasses and maintained a relatively friendly demeanor.
Just as Fei Hu was about to speak, the middle-aged woman from earlier rushed in front of him and shouted loudly, "Is this how you handle things? My money was stolen here! He came out to help me seek justice, but your security guard insulted him and said it was none of his business! Moreover, he started it first and then claimed that others hit him! Is there any fairness in this? Everyone can see clearly!"
As the middle-aged woman shouted, those around her echoed her sentiments. However, no one wanted to get involved in such trouble; not a single person stepped forward to testify. Seeing this, Hou Xiaodong grew bolder and said loudly, "Director Chen, don't believe her! They might be colluding to cause trouble in our hospital!" His baseless accusation made the middle-aged woman tremble with anger.
Fei Hu was about to step forward to reason with them when Sister Wu approached angrily. Upon seeing Fei Hu, she scolded him, "What are you doing here? You didn't even give me a heads-up! I thought you were still in line. Do you still need your wound dressed?"
Fei Hu was left speechless by Sister Wu's questions.
Director Chen noticed this and smiled as he asked, "Are you here to change his dressing? Where is he injured?"
Fei Hu unhappily raised his right arm slightly. Director Chen took a look and smiled again, saying, "Misunderstanding! Since this incident happened in our hospital, we must take responsibility for investigating it. Let's go to the police office shortly and review the footage from earlier to see what really happened before calling the police. We need to give this lady an explanation."
Upon hearing this, the middle-aged woman forced a smile and said, "Thank you first, Director Chen. But how long will this investigation take? My husband is waiting for surgery; we can't afford any delays." As she spoke, she began to cry again.
Sister Wu glanced at Fei Hu and asked with some confusion, "What's going on? How are you involved in this? I just can't figure it out."
Fei Hu smiled, knowing that Sister Wu might be confused. So he explained everything that had happened from start to finish. After listening, Sister Wu smiled and said, "You go ahead. Someone has to take care of this; otherwise, it wouldn't be fair. I'll go register for you now, and once this is done, we'll get your medicine changed."
Watching Sister Wu leave, Fei Hu hurriedly pulled out a stack of money from his pocket, counted it, and stuffed it into the middle-aged woman's hand, saying, "Auntie, hurry and pay the fee so the uncle can have surgery. As for your missing money, I'll accompany Director Chen to investigate. We will definitely find a result. If we can't figure this out here, I'll take you to the police station." Fei Hu said while glancing at Director Chen and the others.
The middle-aged woman was extremely grateful and almost knelt down in public. Fei Hu quickly helped her up. At that moment, people began to gather around Fei Hu, giving him thumbs up. The middle-aged woman asked Fei Hu for his phone number and hurried off to pay the fee. The people in line made way for her as she went to the window, and seeing this scene made Fei Hu very happy.
In the police office, Director Chen instructed the security guard on duty to immediately pull up the morning's surveillance footage. As they reviewed it, the security team leader suddenly exclaimed, "Director Chen, look at this person's series of actions; it seems he didn't just steal from one person."
Fei Hu glanced at the face on the screen and reminded Director Chen, "Rewind the footage to see when this person entered the lobby and if there were any accomplices with him. Given his arrogance, there should be others assisting him."
Director Chen agreed and had the security team leader rewind to the scene from when they just started work that morning. Suddenly, Director Chen shouted, "Stop! Isn't this that guy? Who is he talking to? Zoom in on that."
The security team leader immediately complied. As they zoomed in on the face, everyone present gasped in surprise: "Ah! The person he's talking to is Hou Xiaodong! So they know each other! Quick! Captain Wang, immediately apprehend Hou Xiaodong! Let's call the police now!" Director Chen said as he grabbed the phone from the table.
After Director Chen finished calling the police, the security team leader rushed in, panting heavily. He said, "Director Chen, that guy has already run away. The gatekeeper saw him get on a motorcycle and head towards Main Street."
"What kind of work are you doing? I've said long ago that we shouldn't keep someone like him. Look at this! They even said his work performance was good! If it weren't for someone complaining about him on the phone, I would still be in the dark!" Director Chen said as he turned around and walked out.
When he saw Fei Hu, he felt a bit embarrassed and said, "Young man, I'm really sorry. This is a failure on my part. How about this: leave me your phone number. Once we recover your money, I'll bring it to you. If we can't get it back, I'll cover it with my own money." Fei Hu smiled; he didn't know what to say.
