On the day the typhoon struck, it was destined for a major incident to occur. For an entire afternoon, Fei Hu felt anxious. Although he and Chen Hui were chatting casually, his mind was elsewhere.
Yingzi, on the other hand, remained remarkably calm, continuously telling jokes and engaging in light conversation with Chen Hui about topics girls often discuss. Chen Hui was sweet-talking, addressing Yingzi as "sister" repeatedly, and the two seemed very close.
After a while, Fei Hu could no longer stay idle. He quietly made an excuse to step outside and walked along the ridge behind Chen Hui's house. The sight of lush greenery and people working in the fields was as beautiful as a painting.
"Hey, is that you?" a sweet voice called out.
Fei Hu quickly turned around to see a girl with her pants rolled up above her knees, revealing two fair legs covered in mud. She was smiling brightly at him.
Who is she? Why does she seem so familiar? Just as Fei Hu was racking his brain trying to remember, the girl tossed her long braid behind her shoulder and walked over with a smile. Noticing that he couldn't recall her name, she laughed and said, "You really are forgetful! I'm Wang Yun, a colleague of Chen Hui's. We met on the train; have you forgotten so soon?"
"Oh, it's you! Without the uniform, you're even prettier; I really didn't recognize you," Fei Hu exclaimed, slapping his forehead as he finally remembered.
Wang Yun laughed and said, "So, you came to visit Chen Hui's parents? You’re quite lucky! Chen Hui is known as the beauty of our village—smart, kind-hearted, and with a good family background. Not many can compare to her. If you're with her, you've really hit the jackpot!"
Oh my goodness! This situation is awkward; it's like stepping in something unpleasant. Fei Hu couldn't quite articulate his thoughts. He decided it was best not to say anything further—some things are better left unsaid.
Looking at the beautiful and graceful Wang Yun, he smiled and said, "I didn't expect you two were from the same village and colleagues too. By the way, do you have land at home?"
Wang Yun pointed to a patch of green vegetable fields ahead and smiled, "That’s my family's land. It may look small now, but it's quite precious. My parents are farmers, so we have some land. I enjoy working in the fields; besides, we work five days on and five days off—it's hard to just sit around doing nothing."
As they chatted and laughed, they didn’t notice that the sun had already set. The workers in the fields began heading home. Wang Yun smiled at Fei Hu and said, "I’ll head back now. I’ll come find you guys tonight; I hope I won’t disturb you!"
"Of course not! You’re welcome anytime! With you joining us, we’ll have four people—perfect for a game!" Fei Hu replied with a smile.
When he returned to Chen Hui's house, dinner was already being served. Seeing how much effort Chen Hui's parents had put into preparing the meal made Fei Hu feel somewhat embarrassed. Chen Hui's mother quickly noticed his discomfort and smiled as she said, "Our Hui Zi has a work schedule that's a bit different from others', so she doesn't have many friends visiting often. But now that you're here, she's really thrilled! You all should stay for a couple more days; it just so happens that her father and I are going to Xiao Xi tomorrow for a friend's son's wedding—we'll also take some time to relax."
Upon hearing this, Chen Hui smiled and asked, "Is that true? You both should get out more; staying at home all the time isn't good."
"How can we go? Someone has to stay home to watch the door. If you leave, we won't be able to go anywhere. If we leave you alone at home and you won't do anything, now at least you have company," Chen Hui's Mother said, glancing up at Fei Hu. Her meaning was quite clear.
Chen Hui, feeling a bit embarrassed, quickly replied, "Mom, if you're going, just go. Why say so much?"
Chen Hui's Dad, who usually didn't talk much, smiled and said, "Your mom is getting older and tends to ramble. But you, dear girl, if you're a bit smarter, your mom promises not to nag anymore."
"Dad, you're here too! How can you say that about Mom?" Chen Hui said playfully. Beside her, Fei Hu felt envious; he had never acted spoiled in his life. In his memory, his grandfather had always been very strict with him.
Dinner was cheerful, with everyone chatting and laughing; the atmosphere was truly harmonious. Yingzi was much more generous compared to noon.
Chen Hui's home was quite spacious. She and her parents lived downstairs while the upstairs rooms served as guest rooms. When Fei Hu and Yingzi arrived, they moved upstairs. While Fei Hu and Yingzi were tidying up the room together, Chen Hui walked in. She patted Fei Hu on the back and asked with a smile, "Where did you go before dinner? You were gone for so long. You really have some nerve wandering around in an unfamiliar place. Were you hoping to see the beauties of our village?"
"Aren't you the beauty of your village? Is there anyone more beautiful than you?" Fei Hu replied with a smile.
Chen Hui pretended to change her expression and asked seriously, "Who did you hear that from? Be honest or I might really get angry."
It's hard to say whether Chen Hui was pretty or not. Fei Hu sat comfortably on the big bed and laughed as he asked Chen Hui and Yingzi, "Guess who I ran into earlier!"
"Who? Do you actually know anyone here?" Yingzi said skeptically.
Chen Hui grew a bit impatient and eagerly asked, "Who is it? Just tell us already! It's so annoying to keep us guessing."
"You two really can't guess? I ran into Wang Yun on the path—she's the girl who was on the same bus as Chen Hui," Fei Hu said while shaking his head deliberately.
Upon hearing this, Chen Hui exclaimed, "Oh!" then laughed and said, "I see! So you ran into our village's big beauty! No wonder you were gone for so long; I thought someone had taken you away to be their bride!"
Chen Hui's comment made everyone laugh. Her analogy was somewhat inappropriate; comparing them to bandits wasn't quite right. After Fei Hu explained it further, Chen Hui refused to let it go and started chasing Fei Hu around playfully while he used Yingzi as a shield. The three of them turned the room into a lively scene.
Suddenly, footsteps approached as Wang Yun came over, shouting loudly, "Wow! Not even married yet and you're already starting domestic disputes! Is Hui Zi being a bit too fierce?"
Chen Hui finally stopped her hands, looking shy. She softly said to Wang Yun, "Don't talk nonsense, or I'll..."
"Come on, what's there to be embarrassed about? No one else is saying anything, and you're the one who brought it up," Wang Yun replied as she walked in and greeted Yingzi. Although the two of them had little interaction in the car, they still had some influence on each other.
Three women, a lively scene—this was no exaggeration. In just a little while, they had completely sidelined Fei Hu, chatting happily among themselves. Suddenly, Wang Yun exclaimed in surprise, "Hey, Chen Hui, did you know that there was a violent brawl on Xiao Hang National Road today? I heard they even used guns; it's really terrifying!"
"You're talking nonsense. Who would dare use a gun in broad daylight? It's just rumors; you can't believe it," Fei Hu said deliberately, wanting to see how Wang Yun would react and where she had heard such news.
Unexpectedly, when Wang Yun heard Fei Hu's words, she became a bit anxious and said loudly, "How is that nonsense? Someone saw it with their own eyes; it can't be fake! I heard that by the time the police arrived, those people had already run away."
Chen Hui glanced at Wang Yun and quietly said, "Isn't your brother back today? Did you hear this from him?"
Wang Yun nodded silently, clearly not wanting anyone to know that she had a brother. Yingzi quickly chimed in, "In today's society, if you have money, you can get anything. Although gun control is strict, you can still buy them on the black market. So it's not surprising that gunfights happen."
Hearing Yingzi say this made Chen Hui hurriedly change the subject as they started thinking about what to do for fun. Wang Yun checked the time and suggested, "Hui Zi, we haven't gone karaoke in a long time. How about we go to KTV tonight? I'll treat you and your male friend. What do you think? You won't get jealous, right?"
"Who would get jealous? Seriously," Chen Hui replied, her face turning red as she glanced awkwardly at Fei Hu, who pretended nothing had happened.
Seeing that Chen Hui didn't oppose much, Wang Yun immediately pressed on with a smile, "Then let's go! Are we calling a cab or driving ourselves? Why are you so quiet now?"
Chen Hui rolled her eyes at Wang Yun and said loudly, "What car are we taking? We're going to drink later; let's just call a cab."
