"What? Please clarify," Fei Hu said eagerly upon hearing the driver mention a fork in the road.
The driver, slightly annoyed, replied, "It's just a hundred meters ahead. Get ready! You can slow down now, turn off the lights, make a full turn of the steering wheel, straighten up, and accelerate a bit."
Fei Hu couldn't help but feel a bit impressed; in such darkness, the driver seemed to have night vision. The car obediently drove into a village. Looking at the sparse streetlights at the village entrance, Fei Hu asked, "Isn't this entering a village?"
"That's right, this is a village. If you go straight through this village along the river, after passing three more villages, you'll reach Lin Yan Train Station. This route is at least forty to fifty minutes faster than taking the Main Road," the taxi driver said confidently.
Yingzi, sitting in the back, quickly chimed in, "Master, you're amazing! You know about these small roads too; no wonder your business is so booming."
"Haha, you're overpraising me. I grew up around here; I could navigate this road with my eyes closed. But during the day it's different; there have been several accidents in the village, and it's hard to get through. Right now is just perfect," the driver explained as he instructed Fei Hu to turn on the headlights.
What a talent! Fei Hu had been driving for several years but had never driven in such darkness before. Fortunately, with the driver beside him, he wouldn't dare attempt it alone.
After passing through the village, the car continued down a country road. Although the road was narrower, it was relatively smooth. Plus, there were no pedestrians at night. Fei Hu just kept driving forward. Whenever they approached a bend or an uneven section of road, the driver would warn him in advance to steer left or right. They sped along like this until around two o'clock when the rental car came to a dusty stop by Lin Yan Train Station. Yingzi generously gave the driver an extra thousand yuan. Seeing the bright smile on his face, they all bid farewell.
Lin Yan Station was a small stop with not many trains passing through. There were no trains going to City A from here. Yingzi decisively looked at the electronic display board on the platform and said to Fei Hu, "In five minutes, there's an express train passing through here to Shanghang. We'll take that train and transfer to City A once we get to Shanghang."
Fei Hu didn't respond and led Yingzi directly toward the ticket gate. A middle-aged man stood there with his head down; upon seeing Fei Hu and Yingzi approach, he extended his hand clearly indicating for them to show their tickets.
Yingzi stepped in front of Fei Hu with a smile and said, "Sorry we're late! We didn't have time to buy tickets; can we get them on the train?"
Time passed slowly as Fei Hu felt anxious; if they were any later, they wouldn't be able to board even if they got inside. The middle-aged man hesitated for a moment, looked up at Yingzi and Fei Hu, waved his hand and quietly said, "Hurry up; this train will only stop for two minutes."
It seems there are still good people in this world. As they ran, Fei Hu repeatedly said, "Thank you! Thank you!"
They rushed through the passageway and barely steadied themselves when the train screeched to a halt. Those without tickets rushed to board as soon as the doors opened. Just then someone exited from a sleeper car; Fei Hu pulled Yingzi along and dashed inside.
A young conductor soon followed them and shouted loudly, "Where are your tickets? Why are you running? It's just you two boarding; do you need to be in such a hurry?"
"Without a ticket," Fei Hu said somewhat annoyed.
The Conductor glanced at Fei Hu and chuckled softly, "Hey! You’re so brazen without a ticket. Go get one first; don’t just stand here. This is a sleeper car, not a hard seat car, so there are no standing tickets." Just as the Conductor finished speaking, the train let out a whistle and started moving.
As everything on the platform rushed backward, Fei Hu suddenly spotted Little Four sprinting on the platform, followed by several Lackeys. When Fei Hu turned around, he saw Yingzi's face filled with shock; it seemed she had noticed too.
"Hey! I told you to get your tickets; why are you just standing there? What are you doing?" the Conductor said as she opened her personal lounge.
At this point, where could they go to buy tickets? The train manager might have fallen asleep. Thinking of this, Fei Hu smiled and squeezed into the crew's lounge, unceremoniously turning his body to sit next to the Conductor. It was then that he realized how beautiful this female conductor was—she had an oval face with a rosy complexion and looked to be around twenty-four or twenty-five years old.
The Conductor shifted her body slightly inward, rolled her eyes, and said softly, "You really have thick skin. Who let you in here? Didn’t I tell you to get a ticket? Are you going to buy one or not?"
"Can you not be angry? Did I say I wouldn’t buy one? Look at this time; where am I supposed to find the train manager? Don’t you think it’s unreasonable to kick us off the train when you look so beautiful?" Fei Hu said with a cheeky grin, trying to charm her.
A smile finally appeared on the female conductor's face. She chuckled and said, "I really admire people like you. So what do you suggest we do? There are rules on the train that prohibit ticketless passengers from staying overnight here. You can’t ruin my job, can you?"
"Of course not! How about this: let my friend stay here for now, and when morning comes, I’ll go buy a ticket. I can buy tickets for several stops if needed; my friend is injured and can’t stand for too long," Fei Hu found himself lowering his tone in front of such beauty.
The Conductor thought for a moment, picked up the registration book, and glanced at it. "There’s only one available spot, and I don’t know if someone will board midway. You really surprise me."
"That’s great! Just let my friend stay; I’m fine with anything," Fei Hu was naturally pleased upon hearing there was hope.
The Conductor quietly told Fei Hu, "It’s the lower bunk in compartment 3; just let your friend go sleep there directly. I can’t show my face."
Hearing this made Fei Hu so happy that he almost wanted to hug her and give her a kiss. He hurried out and saw Yingzi leaning against the door of the train dozing off. After all the bumps along the way and considering her injury, it was tough on her.
Fei Hu approached her quietly and conveyed the conductor's message. Yingzi thought for a moment and said, "Why don’t you go sleep instead? You've been driving all this way, and you have an injury on your shoulder too."
Fei Hu felt deeply moved by this and didn’t say anything. He gently pushed Yingzi towards bunk 3, placed his backpack on the bunk, lightly patted Yingzi's back, and then stood by the door of the train looking out into the vast night.
As the train swayed, Fei Hu couldn’t help but yawn several times; fatigue crept in quietly. However, he couldn’t sleep while standing. Just as he was feeling quite uncomfortable, someone gently tapped him on the shoulder. Turning around, he saw it was the Conductor again, yawning as she said, "Come on! It’s fine to sit here for a bit."
Fei Hu hurriedly followed her into the break room. The female conductor closed the door and said, "You have quite a personality. I thought you were just a smooth talker who turns to gum whenever he sees a girl."
"Hey! You underestimate me! If it weren't for my friend being injured, I wouldn't bother asking for help. I could just sit in the hard seat compartment; if others can sit, why can't I?" Fei Hu replied, scratching his head awkwardly.
The Conductor yawned and said, "What are you two up to? I feel like your relationship is a bit strange. You don't seem like a couple in love, but it looks like you both care about each other."
"We're good friends! Can't you tell?" Fei Hu chuckled.
The young people quickly found common ground and soon forgot about their sleepiness. By the time they noticed, the outside of the train window was already glowing white. During their conversation, Fei Hu learned that the girl’s name was Chen Hui, and she had been a conductor for three or four years. She had studied railway technology in school.
In the end, Fei Hu boldly asked for her phone number and left his number in City A for her. Chen Hui said that when she had time off, she would definitely come to City A to visit and insisted that Fei Hu take her out for dinner. Of course, Fei Hu readily agreed.
Just as they were getting into a lively discussion, there was suddenly a knock on the door from outside. Chen Hui opened the door to find another Conductor around her age standing there. She glanced at the break room and smiled, "Sorry to interrupt you two."
Chen Hui playfully glared at her and said with a laugh, "Wang Yun, don’t say nonsense, or I won’t talk to you anymore."
"Hey! You're all grown up now; there's no need to be shy. It's just a boyfriend, right? What's there to hide? I've had one for two years now. Are you afraid we'll ask you for wedding candy?" Wang Yun teased Chen Hui.
Chen Hui glanced at Fei Hu with a hint of embarrassment and replied with a smile, "It's just wedding candy. Can't you buy some for them later?"
Fei Hu was taken aback for a moment before laughing, "Sure, I'll buy some later."
