Alice was incredibly sharp. As soon as she saw Fei Hu's expression, she stood up, waved her hand, and left. The room was suddenly left with only Fei Hu, who felt not only that the house was empty but also that his heart was empty.
The next morning, Fei Hu arrived at the company half an hour early. He wanted to gather some information from the security guard about what Team Leader Wang had said regarding layoffs. To his surprise, it became a reality within just one day; it seemed his information was very accurate.
When Fei Hu arrived at the Guard Room, it was the shift change between the day and night shifts, and there were many people present. However, unlike usual, everyone wore an extra layer of worry on their faces, which struck Fei Hu as odd.
Team Leader Wang had already changed into his security uniform. He smiled faintly and said, "Those who should go to work should go to work, and those who should rest can go home! As for the layoffs, it's a major incident for the company. So many high-level executives were let go yesterday, and no one spoke up about it. Now it's our turn; what is there to be afraid of? If they want to lay off people, so be it!"
It turned out that everyone was anxious about this issue. Fei Hu hadn't really considered that security personnel could also be laid off. Would he be among them? This round of layoffs was being handled by Ye Wei and Wang Qian, and knowing how many things Wang Qian had on her plate, he wondered if she might take this opportunity to let him go. Team Leader Wang approached him and patted the dazed Fei Hu on the back, laughing as he said, "Stop worrying; they won't lay you off. Just go to work!"
Fei Hu smiled and replied, "That may not be certain. But where did you get this news from? Is it reliable? We don't want everyone to worry for nothing; look at their faces."
Team Leader Wang sighed deeply and lowered his voice. "This news came from the captain. His information can't be false. You should think about where he got it from—it's from Vice President Wang. Young man, you're still a bit naive; just because you hang around with these higher-ups every day doesn't mean you know all the inside gossip. It seems you still need to learn from our captain."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu finally understood. The team leader was absolutely right; such a source of information couldn't possibly be fake. However, he felt a bit unconvinced and asked Team Leader Wang, "This news is considered confidential; even if the captain knew first, why would he tell everyone? Isn't that just asking for criticism?"
"Haha! You really are naive enough to squeeze water out of yourself! The captain is looking out for his own interests. Look at those who usually don't perform well and have no backing—when they hear about layoffs, they get particularly anxious. What do they do then? They can only turn to the captain for help. And how does that help come about? It requires some 'blood' in return—gifts and meals are definitely involved. Now do you understand?" Team Leader Wang whispered with a light laugh.
Oh my goodness! He hadn't expected there to be so much going on behind the scenes. Fei Hu felt like his eyes had been opened wide as he walked into the hall with a sense of unease and sat down at a table, his mind filled with thoughts of layoffs.
The employees of the company building had almost all arrived a few minutes before work, with only three big shots left. First, Ye Wei and Wang Qian came in together, chatting and laughing as they walked. It was clear that they were in a good mood. From the lobby to the elevator, Wang Qian didn't even glance away; she followed Ye Wei directly into the elevator, as if Fei Hu didn't exist at all.
The indifference and disregard made Fei Hu see this woman's true colors. It turned out everything was a lie; the meals and the red envelopes were just ways for her to use Fei Hu to get what she wanted.
Finally, at eight twenty, Ye Xiaofei walked in with a pale face, clearly sleep-deprived. However, after a night’s rest, her previously swollen eyes were hardly noticeable. As she passed by Fei Hu, she gave him a heartfelt smile that was incredibly radiant. Fei Hu swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue; he was afraid that speaking up would draw unwanted attention.
Fei Hu estimated that when Ye Xiaofei was close to her office, she picked up the phone on her desk. A slightly hoarse voice came through the receiver: "Hello! Who is this? What’s going on?"
Fei Hu hurriedly relayed the news he had heard that morning, covering the mouthpiece with his hand to avoid being overheard. However, since it was just starting work hours, no one passed through the lobby.
Ye Xiaofei paused for a moment on the phone and said, "Don't worry about anything else; just focus on your work. If there are any changes, call me." After saying that, she hung up. Fei Hu knew that there was nothing he could do for Ye Xiaofei now; as a woman surrounded by difficulties, life was indeed tough for her.
With something weighing on his mind, Fei Hu felt restless sitting in the lobby. He got up to walk a few steps and then sat back down again. He really didn’t know what to do. After fidgeting for a while, he sat down angrily and thought to himself that maybe it would be best to just quit. He could find another job outside; if he couldn’t find one, he could go work at A-Lian's glove factory or even learn massage from Xia Yan. Once he thought it through, it didn’t seem like such a big deal anymore.
Around ten o'clock, there was a commotion in the Guard Room. Fei Hu felt curious and hurried over to see the security team leader arguing with Team Leader Wang. As soon as Fei Hu pushed the door open, the security team leader raised his hand and shouted loudly, "Fei Hu! You came at just the right time; listen up! There’s going to be a major layoff at the company, and you’re part of our security team. Pack your things and turn in everything you need to return before heading to the finance office to collect your pay."
When Fei Hu heard this, his head buzzed; he hadn’t expected this day would finally come. Fortunately, he had mentally prepared himself for it; otherwise, he might have fainted from shock. That woman really had no sense of loyalty; her heart was truly cruel!
Seeing that Fei Hu didn’t respond, the security team leader shouted again, "I’m talking to you! Are you listening?"
Fei Hu thought angrily to himself that he didn’t need such loudness since he wasn’t deaf. He glared fiercely at the security team leader and said, "I’m not deaf; is it necessary for you to shout? Be careful or I’ll hit you." As he spoke, he clenched his fist and shook it at the security team leader.
Unexpectedly, this guy seemed afraid of getting hit; he stepped back in fright and hurriedly said, "Don’t take it out on me; I’m not in charge of this decision—it's from above. If you have any grievances, don’t come looking for me." With that, he bolted out of the room and disappeared in an instant.
The sight of this guy in such a disheveled state made the security guards in the security room laugh. Team Leader Wang patted Fei Hu on the shoulder and said, "Why don't you punch him a couple of times? This greedy guy has laid off five people this time, all of whom never gave him gifts or took him out for meals."
Little Tiger snorted coldly, "Taking him out for a meal? I might as well take him out with my fists. It's no big deal; getting laid off might be for the best. Who knows, I might find a better job outside and not have to endure this guy's nonsense anymore. It would be best if everyone left and let the team leader arrange for his family to take over."
Everyone chuckled at this, but Fei Hu could see that some smiles were forced, especially Team Leader Wang's. He was over ten years older than Fei Hu and had worked as a security guard for many years. Fei Hu could tell that he was reluctant to leave this job. After all, it wasn't easy to rise to the position of squad leader after so many years. Regardless, he earned three hundred yuan more than others each month due to his position allowance, which was an advantage gained from years of hard work.
"Old brother, it's fine; if we have to go, then we go! That's just how it is with work—ironclad barracks but flowing soldiers. The new blood shows that we are still useful people. I'll help you look for a job," Fei Hu said, giving Team Leader Wang's back a couple of comforting pats.
The veteran security guard stood up, smiled helplessly, and said, "You really know how to talk. But for you to find a job is no challenge at all. With your skills, you could skip being a security guard and go straight into private bodyguard work. The pay is not only higher but also more comfortable. But for someone like me at my age, finding a decent job outside is quite difficult."
Suddenly, Li Jie, a guard sitting by the door, stood up abruptly and said with some agitation, "Let's go find the chairman! Are they just going to lay us off without any explanation? If not, we five will make a scene at the Labor Bureau!"
Li Jie's words received strong agreement from everyone else. Fei Hu felt indifferent; if they wanted to make noise, it could serve as an outlet for their frustrations! So they headed toward the lobby. Upon entering, they saw the security captain standing there with four close guards. As soon as he spotted the five of them, he shouted loudly, "Don't act recklessly! The chairman may not even want to see you. Just handle your exit procedures!"
The others who came with Fei Hu hesitated upon seeing the situation; it seemed they still feared the security captain. But Fei Hu was different; he couldn't stand the captain's intimidating demeanor. After all, they had been together for so long; there was no need to bring a few people over to threaten them!
Fei Hu stepped forward and pointed at the security captain, saying, "Get them to back off; otherwise, don't blame me for being rude." The atmosphere instantly became tense.
