Regardless, Fei Hu has indeed been reborn. A-Lian and Xiao Qi were very happy and immediately notified Bald Zhang. They all agreed to meet in the East Street for Chongqing hotpot that evening.
During dinner, the group sat together, naturally exchanging cups and drinks, switching from baijiu to beer. They drank freely, partly because Fei Hu had just come out, and everyone was in high spirits, and partly because A-Lian and Xiao Qi had started their own businesses, which was worth celebrating!
"Boss, your way of doing things is wrong. You don't tell us anything. How can we form an alliance? These past few days, things have been unstable in our area. They've been coming to me, asking if the boss could hold a meeting to see if we should organize some action. But your phone has been off for over twenty days; turns out you were hiding away inside," Bald Zhang said, raising his glass and smiling at Fei Hu.
Fei Hu clinked glasses with Bald Zhang and downed his drink in one go. Afterward, he sighed and said, "Brother, that's not called hiding away. Once you're inside, you truly understand the meaning of prison. So I advise everyone here: if you can endure it, then endure it. If you're not careful and end up inside, you'll truly regret it!"
"Come on! You've turned into a preacher after being gone for over twenty days. If you can endure it so well now that you've just come out, why did you bring that whole group to our place? Is that what you call enduring?" Xiao Qi bluntly remarked, leaving Fei Hu speechless and causing everyone to burst into laughter.
Once the laughter subsided, A-Lian continued, "It's really impressive that the boss has such insight. We should all listen to him; endurance is indeed necessary. In today's society, fighting and killing are no longer in vogue; it's about who has money and who knows how to make money. Being able to fight or kill is outdated. However, a person's patience has its limits; constantly yielding will only allow others to trample on you even more. Brother Guang is right; when necessary, we should take action to make a statement."
"That's how it should be. But we need to choose an opponent wisely. We can't touch a big gang like the Dragon Tiger Gang; we should target someone of comparable strength so that it’s worthwhile. I wonder if A-Lian has any targets in mind," Brother Guang said as he downed another beer. His eyes were turning red from drinking, but he remained very clear-headed—truly a seasoned drinker.
A-Lian smiled and said, "Some things you want to avoid are simply unavoidable. Today, the person Fei Hu brought along calls himself Six Brother. He doesn't seem to be from a major gang, but he dares to send people to collect protection fees in the bustling city center, which shows he has some strength. However, he didn't expect to be beaten into retreat by a group of women at our factory gate. Do you think he'll let this go? He will definitely seek revenge. We can use him as a target to practice our skills while also making a name for ourselves."
"Great! Taking down someone like him will be welcomed by the public; we’re essentially ridding society of harm. This is a good choice; once we win, those big gangs that want to step on us will have to think twice," Bald Zhang said, feeling like a champion of justice.
Fei Hu listened quietly without saying anything; he didn’t know what to say either. This situation truly put him in a dilemma. He had tasted enough of life behind high walls, but in order to establish himself in this society, sometimes it was necessary to shift from passive to active through quiet endurance—it might not be a bad thing.
Although A-Lian was a woman, she would not lose out to any man at the table. After finishing the baijiu and moving on to beer, she drank with ease and confidence without feeling forced at all. As she saw the last bottle of beer nearing empty, A-Lian smiled and said, "Let’s call it a night here; everyone is enjoying themselves and no one is drunk yet—that's our goal! Brother Guang, remember to find out who this Six Brother really is tomorrow. Then Boss can find time for us all to hold a meeting."
The conversation had reached this point, and if Fei Hu remained silent, it would be irresponsible of him as the leader of the alliance. Fei Hu stood up, shook his head, and said, "You all arrange everything, just notify me when it's time, and I'll attend. As for the specifics of how to proceed, we can discuss that in detail during the meeting."
Seeing Fei Hu express his stance, A-Lian and Bald Zhang were very pleased. They were worried that this reluctant leader might say he wouldn't take part, which would complicate matters.
After exchanging cheerful goodbyes, A-Lian hailed a taxi for Fei Hu and personally saw him into the car. She even exchanged a few words with the driver before getting in with Xiao Qi and the others. The man who had been drinking looked at the women with slightly dazed eyes. The driver glanced at Fei Hu and asked with a smile, "That girl is nice; is she your girlfriend?"
Fei Hu shook his head and replied, "No, just a friend."
"Hey, it's late at night. Why didn't you take her home? That's a wasted opportunity," the driver lamented as he drove.
Lying in bed, Fei Hu felt the loneliness of being alone. After having drunk quite a bit earlier, the driver's words stirred something in him. On this cold night, having a woman to warm his bed would be wonderful. He suddenly thought of Sun Li; the days spent together were unforgettable, especially the crazy moments they shared.
Fei Hu picked up his phone without knowing why he felt compelled to call someone to share his feelings of loneliness. As he scrolled through his contacts, he suddenly found Xia Yan's number. His spirits lifted—why not give her a call? He felt most relaxed around Xia Yan; they enjoyed each other's company without worrying about tomorrow. With that thought in mind, Fei Hu pressed the dial button.
The phone rang for quite a while before connecting. Immediately, Xia Yan's cheerful voice came through: "Hello! You deadbeat! Where have you been these days? Why was your phone off? What made you think to call me now?"
Fueled by alcohol, Fei Hu chuckled on the phone and said, "I called because I missed you. What's wrong with that? Where are you? You sound a bit out of breath."
"Out of breath? I'm driving! If you miss me so much, just come over! My door is always open for you," Xia Yan laughed on the other end of the line, her voice enchanting Fei Hu.
Fei Hu sighed and replied, "I'm already in bed; it's cold and inconvenient to go out again. I don't want to come."
Xia Yan paused for a moment before saying, "How about I come over? Are you still living in that Shanty Area? I wonder if your bed is big enough?" Her words made Fei Hu's blood rush instantly.
"Enough space for you to bring another one to sleep. I currently live in Limin Community Building 12, Room 602. If you come over, I won't sleep and will wait for you, no tricks," Fei Hu said fluently, his voice bright and clear.
Xia Yan laughed and said, "You little rascal, living in a shared apartment and still wanting me to bring someone else? You really have a wild imagination. Just wait, I'll be there soon; I'm not far from here, about a ten-minute drive." After saying that, Xia Yan hung up the phone.
Fei Hu jumped up from the bed in excitement. This was the first time a woman would be staying overnight in his room, so he had to tidy up. Thinking of this, Fei Hu immediately got to work, first opening the windows to let in some fresh air. He put away all the unnecessary and unsightly items, especially on the bed. He cleaned thoroughly and even found some floral water he had used in the summer to spray around the room.
After walking around the room twice, Fei Hu felt it was good enough and sat down on the sofa to wait for Xia Yan. He had never been so eager to wait for someone before. Just as he was thinking about what they should do first when Xia Yan arrived, his phone on the table rang. Grabbing it, he saw it was a call from Xia Yan. Assuming she needed something, he quickly answered, "Where are you? Do you want me to come down and get you?"
"No need. I just wanted to let you know that I'm really sorry. I got halfway here but had to turn back due to something that came up. Sorry for making you wait! I'll come by another day," Xia Yan said apologetically on the phone.
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu felt as if cold water had been poured over him. He slumped back onto the sofa and replied listlessly, "It's fine; we'll talk later." Without waiting for Xia Yan to respond, he hung up the phone angrily. That annoying woman actually stood him up! Fei Hu kicked off his slippers in frustration.
Just then, there was a gentle knock at the door. Looking at the clock, Fei Hu saw it was already past midnight. Who could it be? So annoying! He found his other slipper and put it on before yanking open the door and grumbling, "What is it? It's late; can't people sleep?"
After saying that, he looked up and couldn't help but exclaim, "Ah! Xia Yan?"
