The once silent Great Forest was suddenly filled with continuous sounds—human screams and wolf howls mixed together, sending chills down the spine. Ye Cheng's face turned pale as he trembled and said, "Children, you must leave quickly! I will stay behind. If the wolf pack gets angry, the consequences will be dire. It will be too late if you wait any longer."
"Grandpa, what are you talking about? The wolves haven't come yet, right? Besides, with Yingzi and Fei Hu here, there are so many of us. How can a few wolves scare you like this?" Ye Xiaofei said, clearly confused.
Fei Hu stepped forward, helping Ye Cheng to sit down. "Don't be afraid, old man. Although there are many wolves, many of them are already injured. Plus, after that round of shooting earlier, their attacking power shouldn't be very strong. Moreover, they are currently entangled with those people and won't attack us for now—unless they are pushed to a corner. At that point, they will definitely attack anyone they see."
Ye Cheng nodded but said anxiously, "I am afraid! Just seeing these beasts makes my heart race. You don't know; when I was young, I once took my brothers into the mountains and encountered a wolf pack. One brother didn't listen to advice and charged forward, which angered the pack. We were overwhelmed by their brutal attack. Even though we had many people, it was terrifying—five brothers lost their lives to the wolves, and their deaths were too gruesome to bear. That was a bloody lesson."
After Ye Cheng finished speaking, he fell into a long silence, seemingly trapped in painful memories from years ago.
Suddenly, two figures burst out of the forest with screams, rolling and scrambling as they emerged. Their clothes were torn and covered in blood. Just as they had barely escaped the trees, five or six wild wolves sprang out behind them and charged toward them.
The situation was critical; Fei Hu had no time to think. He leaped out of the cave entrance and grabbed a burning branch. With a loud roar, he soared into the air and positioned himself in front of the wolf pack. The branch in his hand blazed with flames as he waved it in front of the wolves. The five or six wild wolves immediately halted their advance, growling softly while scratching at the ground with their front paws in a terrifying manner, as if vowing not to rest until they tore the two people apart.
Fei Hu faced off against the wolves; neither side dared to act recklessly. Sweat poured down Fei Hu's face like raindrops as he endured an unprecedented test. If he made even the slightest mistake, he would become a meal for this pack of wolves. Time passed slowly; the flames on his branch were about to extinguish. Fei Hu's heart raced; he knew that these wolves were not afraid of him but rather of the fire in his hand. If that fire went out, he couldn't bear to imagine the consequences.
Inside the cave, Ye Cheng trembled nervously while Ye Xiaofei held him tightly, both pale-faced. Yingzi gripped her machete tightly, her palms sweating; she understood that impulsiveness could endanger Fei Hu's life—and if that happened, everyone inside would surely perish.
Behind Fei Hu were the two men who had just been attacked by the wolf pack; they huddled on the ground like leaves in a sieve.
As the flames flickered dangerously close to extinguishing completely, Fei Hu prepared for the worst outcome. In that instant, a loud wolf howl echoed through the forest—a clear and resonant sound that lingered in the valley for some time. Suddenly, the few wild wolves facing Fei Hu growled softly at him as if saying "Just wait," before turning and fleeing back into the trees. At that moment, the flames on his branch went out with a soft puff.
Fei Hu felt sweat pouring down his back; he felt utterly drained as he sank onto a rock. The two men who had been chased by the wolves hurried over to him and bowed deeply, saying, "Thank you! Thank you for saving us!"
Only then did Fei Hu take a closer look at them; they were none other than the fat man who had tried to hunt them down and Mao Liu. Seeing them covered in injuries evoked both pity and disdain in him. Fei Hu coldly asked, "Do you two know me? Sit up and talk."
The Fat Man and Mao Liu looked Fei Hu up and down, exchanged a nod, and the Fat Man whispered, "I haven't met you before, but my brothers have experienced your power. I've known your name for a long time."
"My name? What name?" Fei Hu retorted.
Mao Liu interjected, "You always wear an eye patch and move through the forest like a flying person, so the brothers privately call you the Masked Flyer."
"Fei Hu, who are they? Let them come into the cave; it seems they are also injured," Ye Cheng shouted to Fei Hu at the cave entrance.
Fei Hu waved his hand, leading the Fat Man and Mao Liu into the cave. Upon seeing Ye Cheng and Yingzi, who was holding a machete nearby, the Fat Man's legs went weak, and he plopped down on the ground. He repeatedly said, "Senior Ye, it's all my fault for being unwise and taking this shameless job for money. Your subordinates saved me; let's consider this even. You can leave now! I guarantee your safe return to City A."
"Ha ha, you know me? This isn't your fault. Birds die for food, and people die for wealth; it's just how things are," Ye Cheng said generously, showing no signs of threatening them.
"Thank you for saving our lives, Senior. We will return immediately and let the Brothers clear a path for you," the Fat Man said before turning to Fei Hu to bow again. He then hobbled out with Mao Liu.
"Wait," Ye Cheng called out.
The Fat Man and Mao Liu's expressions changed instantly; they thought Ye Cheng might be about to deal with them, which made them a bit nervous.
"Yingzi, treat their wounds; otherwise, they won't make it out of the mountains with all that blood loss," Ye Cheng's generosity surprised even Fei Hu. After all, these were the people who had been hunting them down; letting them go could backfire if they changed their minds.
Yingzi shook her head helplessly, took out a first aid kit from her bag, cleaned their wounds, applied some medicine, and bandaged the more serious injuries. The two were so grateful they nearly cried.
Ye Xiaofei approached and said sternly, "We saved your lives; we hope you won't regret it once you're outside. If you repay kindness with malice, please tell us who sent you."
"Miss, please rest assured. While I'm not a person of great virtue or reputation, I understand what it means to be grateful. If I can't even do that, I truly don't deserve to be called a person. As for who sent us here, that's a rule in our line of work; I can't break it. Please understand," the Fat Man said passionately; it seemed he was speaking from the heart.
Ye Xiaofei snorted coldly and walked away. Fei Hu picked up binoculars and looked into the trees across from them for a while before turning to the Fat Man and saying, "That mountain over there is a shortcut for you, but it's not safe. I feel that group of wolves hasn't gone far yet. You should take a detour to the neighboring mountain; although it may take longer, it's ultimately safer."
"Thank you, we'll listen to you. Once we go back, we'll all withdraw. You better come down the mountain tomorrow. We'll just say that you were eaten by a pack of wolves, and that way everyone will be fine," the Fat Man said earnestly.
Ye Cheng thought for a moment and replied, "Alright! You all go."
The Fat Man and Mao Liu expressed their gratitude profusely before leaving the cave.
Unexpectedly, this bloody incident took such a turn; everyone couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed that the nightmare of these past few days was coming to an end.
Ye Xiaofei's mood improved significantly as he began joking with Yingzi. The cave was filled with a sense of peace, and the gloom of recent days was swept away. Fei Hu sat at the cave entrance, continuously scanning the forest with binoculars, seemingly still uneasy about the woods.
"Is something wrong?" Ye Cheng asked kindly as he sat beside Fei Hu.
Fei Hu smiled slightly and said, "I just feel like something is off. Why did the wolf pack suddenly retreat? It feels like they had some urgent internal matter that caused them to stop their attack."
"That makes sense. Are you worried they might come back to attack us?" Ye Cheng's voice was low; he feared his question might dampen Ye Xiaofei and Yingzi's joyful mood.
Fei Hu put down the binoculars and said to Ye Cheng, "Old man, here's what I think: we should leave all our food and unnecessary items behind and evacuate immediately. You three go first; I'll hunt some game and leave it at the cave entrance. If the wolf pack comes after us and finds something to eat, it might delay their pursuit since they are animals after all."
"Then you need to be careful. I'll head out with them first. Once you're done, catch up with us quickly. Let's meet by the small river before dark. If anything changes, we'll wait for you at the mountaintop," Ye Cheng said as he stood up, signaling Yingzi and Ye Xiaofei to prepare to leave.
"I'm not going! I want to stay with Fei Hu. My grandfather and I have been following Yingzi; it's too much pressure on her," Ye Xiaofei said as he sat back down on the ground.
