Arriving at the Deep Mountains and Old Forests meant being cut off from the outside world, with no information coming in. The cave they found was not bad; they laid down some hay, and at night they built fires at both ends, making it relatively warm inside. However, food was becoming a problem. The supplies in their backpacks, including gifts for others, were nearly depleted. Fortunately, there was a spring nearby; if the water ran out, they would be in serious trouble.
A few people basked in the newly risen sun. Although they wore faint smiles on their faces, each was increasingly anxious about how long they could stay there. Just yesterday, they had spotted someone moving on the opposite mountain.
Fei Hu sat to one side, using a small knife to carve wooden arrows. Ye Xiaofei ran over and squatted beside him, curiously asking, "Can you really kill wild beasts with that? It looks too primitive."
Fei Hu lifted his head slightly, somewhat stunned. Ye Xiaofei had removed her outer coat due to the sun and wore only a fine inner garment. Since it was a snug fit, her impressive figure appeared even more pronounced under the fabric. Fei Hu looked at her and felt a stirring within.
"Hey! Someone's asking you a question; why aren't you responding?" Ye Xiaofei noticed the greedy look in Fei Hu's eyes beneath his mask and realized what was happening. She shyly put her coat back on and angrily sat down on a nearby rock. In her haste, her chest jiggled noticeably.
Fei Hu shook off his flustered thoughts and pretended to be serious: "I was thinking about your question. This method may seem old-fashioned, but it's quite practical. If someone has strong arms, shooting an arrow accurately to kill a wild boar is no problem at all."
"Really? That sounds a bit far-fetched," Ye Xiaofei replied with a smile that made her look enchanting.
Fei Hu bundled up several finished arrows with tree bark and smiled at Ye Xiaofei: "You seem a bit skeptical. Once I finish making the bow and go hunting, I'll take you along so you can see for yourself whether the inventions of Ancient People are useful."
"Sure! You better keep your word. By the way, what's your name? You've been here for days without telling anyone your name; isn't that a bit mysterious?" Ye Xiaofei's bright eyes sparkled as she looked at Fei Hu.
Fei Hu was taken aback for a moment before responding, "You never asked me! My name is Fei Hu." He felt particularly pleased inside; at least Ye Xiaofei had started to notice him.
"Haha! You’re not one of those Hu Feis from Snow Mountain Flying Fox, are you? I think your skills are somewhat similar," Ye Xiaofei said with an overly vivid imagination, pulling Fei Hu into the realm of martial arts novels.
Fei Hu stood up, touched his head awkwardly, and said, "You really have me confused! My surname is Tiger (Hu), and my given name is Flying in the Sky (Fei). Remember that."
"Hey! Grandpa, there's actually someone with that surname? How come I didn't know? He can't be lying to me!" Ye Xiaofei turned to seek help from Ye Cheng, who was basking in the sun.
Ye Cheng stood up and walked over while saying, "Child, China is vast and full of wonders. If he says his surname is this, then there must be someone with that surname." As he spoke, he picked up the wooden arrow made by Fei Hu and looked at it with great satisfaction, as it seemed he had used something similar in his youth.
"Fei Hu, I have an idea. Why don't we go steal their food?" Yingzi, who had been silent until now, suddenly stood up with an excited expression.
Upon hearing this, Ye Xiaofei quickly interjected, "Hey! Yingzi, make sure you don't mix up his surname and name. He is called Fei Hu, not Fei Hu."
Yingzi was taken aback and realized her mistake. She quickly smiled and said, "What kind of name is this? It can be read backward and forward; I really got confused. I'll just call it however it sounds right to me; after all, a name is just a code."
Fei Hu quickly agreed, "That's fine; you can call me whatever you like! As for your suggestion about the raid, I think it's feasible. If we can refine it a bit more, that would be even better. Let's discuss it thoroughly."
Yingzi hurried over and sat next to Fei Hu, softly saying, "Go ahead! I'm listening."
"I estimate that they will start searching the mountains again soon. They probably won't come to this small mountain today since they are focused on the one across from us. They likely won't think of this little hill, so we can sneak over from the opposite mountain to find their campsite. We can take what we can and burn what we can't—cutting off their supplies so they have nowhere to stay and nothing to eat. At least it will keep them quiet for two days."
Yingzi and Ye Xiaofei were excited and clapped their hands. Ye Cheng shook his head and asked Fei Hu, "Child, have you studied military strategy? Do you understand the art of warfare?"
"The elder praises me too much; I have only read military books but haven't formally studied," Fei Hu replied politely.
Ye Cheng pondered for a while before suddenly asking, "May I ask who taught you these skills? What do your family members do?"
This question made Fei Hu feel a pang in his heart. He replied softly, "Everything was taught to me by my grandfather; there are no other family members."
Upon hearing this, Ye Cheng quickly said, "I'm sorry! I shouldn't have brought up your painful past; it was thoughtless of me."
"It's fine. I'm an orphan; I've lived in this Great Forest with my grandfather since I was little. I never knew where I came from. My grandfather taught me how to read and write and practice martial arts. It wasn't until I was around twelve that I left the mountains for school and then started working. I've gotten used to it; I don't understand sadness or know what to be sad about." Fei Hu rarely shared these things with others, but today he felt that Ye Cheng resembled his grandfather too much, so he couldn't help but share everything.
Fei Hu's story left everyone silent because they didn't know how to comfort this young man. After a while, Ye Xiaofei raised her tear-filled eyes and gently said, "I am like you; my grandfather raised me too. However, I know I have parents but have never met them. Perhaps this is fate; we should accept it!"
"What's the point of not recognizing each other? Life must go on. I've learned to be strong. Let's go!" Fei Hu said casually, waving at Yingzi before darting into the forest.
Yingzi hurriedly got up and chased after him. Ye Xiaofei watched Fei Hu disappear into the distance and couldn't help but feel sad, saying, "We are both unfortunate souls in this vast world; why must we have met before?"
Ye Cheng looked at his willful granddaughter, feeling a mix of emotions. Recently, he had noticed that Ye Xiaofei's attitude toward Fei Hu was somewhat different, which was something he had never seen in her before. Perhaps it was because she lost her parents too early; Ye Xiaofei's way of living was very solitary, and few could enter her life. Even when she went to study in America, a country so open and vibrant, at twenty-five or twenty-six years old, she had never even had a boyfriend, which made Ye Cheng quite uncomfortable.
"Grandpa, what are you thinking about? Did my words just now upset you?" Ye Xiaofei came over and sat beside Ye Cheng.
Ye Cheng gently raised his hand to stroke Ye Xiaofei's long hair and said softly, "Child, in my youth, I was somewhat headstrong and hurt many people. In my old age, I've tried hard to change, but I feel it's a bit late now. It all depends on you; one must learn to be grateful and repay kindness. You see, not long ago, if it weren't for that Young Man who helped me out, would I still be here today? As for Fei Hu, everything he has done for me feels like something I can never repay."
"Grandpa, please don't say that. I know. If I have the chance in the future, I will definitely thank him properly. He's a good person and worth getting to know better," Ye Xiaofei said as her gaze drifted deep into the mountains, as if lost in sorrowful thoughts.
Fei Hu continued to rush ahead, forgetting that Yingzi was behind him. When he reached halfway up the mountain, Yingzi accidentally stepped on a loose stone, which startled Fei Hu. He stopped and waited for Yingzi to catch up. When she did, Fei Hu reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her up with him. It was the first time they held hands after knowing each other for so long.
Yingzi felt a slight blush on her cheeks and softly said, "Can you slow down? I don't have your stamina."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu realized he had been too careless. After all, he had lived in the Great Forest for over ten years and was a vigorous young man. But Yingzi was different; she was a girl who had only trained during her military service; otherwise, she would have been exhausted by now.
"I'm sorry! Don't be mad; I was just focused on getting there," Fei Hu scratched his head awkwardly.
Seeing Fei Hu's honest demeanor made Yingzi unable to suppress a smile.
