As night gradually fell, the entire company became much quieter. Apart from the cars speeding by on Main Road, leaving behind the sound of tires rolling over the pavement, Fei Hu felt a bit lonely that evening.
He stood at the base of the building, looking at the few windows that were still lit; the rest of the employees had already left for the day. Fei Hu couldn't help but glance at his watch. It was eleven o'clock, and he silently cursed the security captain for lying to him about everyone leaving around ten. It seemed this guy had tricked him again.
Fei Hu sat down in a chair, bored, and opened his phone to play Tetris. Surprisingly, time flew by, and before he knew it, over half an hour had passed. Suddenly, the elevator doors opened, and seven or eight women stepped out, chatting about how tired they were. It seemed this shift was indeed a tough one.
Fei Hu thought to himself that there shouldn't be anyone left upstairs and decided to go lock the doors. During dinner that night, his supervisor had informed him that there were people working overtime on the 28th and 26th floors, while all other floors had closed by 5:30 PM. Therefore, he only needed to lock the stairwell doors on those two floors. Fei Hu took the elevator first to the 26th floor. After checking the stairwell and confirming it was empty, he locked it from inside and then took the elevator to the 28th floor. As he stepped out of the elevator, he suddenly remembered that this floor housed company executives; it was puzzling why anyone would still be working late.
Using his usual method, Fei Hu checked each office door one by one until he reached the Vice President's Office. He noticed something was off—the door was ajar, and there seemed to be light flashing from inside as if a computer was still on. This couldn't be right! Even if someone forgot to turn off their computer, how could they leave the door unlocked? The Vice President was being incredibly irresponsible.
Fei Hu stepped forward, ready to lock the door when a woman's breathy voice came from inside: "Don't do it here; the door isn't even closed! What if someone comes up? We should just go to a hotel."
"It'll be fine; who would come up at this hour? The security has already locked down the elevators," replied a familiar voice. As he thought about it, Fei Hu realized with shock that it was Chairman Ye Wei speaking. And here they were in Vice President Wang's office—Fei Hu quickly understood what was happening; indeed, the rumors in the company were not unfounded.
Amidst some more breathy sounds, Wang Qian let out a soft scream: "Slow down! Didn't your wife just come back? Why are you acting like a starving wolf?"
"Don't even mention it; that yellow-faced woman keeps such a tight leash on me every day. Whenever I see her flabby body at night, I just lose all motivation. But my Qian knows how to please me; it's so satisfying," Ye Wei said as kissing sounds echoed in the room.
Hearing this made Fei Hu curse Wang Qian a thousand times in his mind. Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly heard Wang Qian ask breathlessly, "Didn't you say you were going to kick Ye Xiaofei out? Why hasn't anything happened yet?"
"You really know how to mix business with pleasure; it's such a buzzkill! I've been thinking about it for a while now, but there's no opportunity to act. Let's wait a bit longer! She's old man's granddaughter; we can't just move against her lightly," Ye Wei panted heavily as if speaking was quite laborious while sounds of slapping echoed continuously from inside.
"You're useless; you can't even deal with an old man! Stop!" Wang Qian's voice was filled with anger.
"My great-aunt, you can't leave me hanging at a time like this," Ye Wei pleaded, a prominent chairman humbling himself before a woman. No wonder he was toyed with by Wang Qian.
Inside the room, there was a sound of furniture being moved. Fei Hu thought to himself, what were they doing? Unable to contain his curiosity, he stepped forward and peeked through the crack in the door. He saw Wang Qian sprawled on the desk, her short skirt pushed up to her waist, her ample chest squished and deformed against the tabletop. Behind her, Ye Wei was thrusting forcefully, his belly protruding.
Seeing this, Fei Hu felt a rush of blood to his head; the scene was quite scandalous. He hurriedly stepped back, leaning against the wall and exhaling deeply. Just as he was about to leave, he heard Wang Qian intermittently asking, "What if the security locks the elevator? How do we get down?"
"Hey! Don't lose focus! I have the key; this is really disappointing," Ye Wei's displeasure was evident. The creaking sounds in the room suddenly stopped, followed by the sound of paper being torn.
"I must tell you, Ye Xiaofei, you need to get her out quickly. She must not know about this batch of goods; otherwise, everything we've done will lead to trouble. Such a large-scale smuggling operation could land us in prison," Wang Qian's voice was low but clear enough for Fei Hu to hear.
"I know this. I will try to pin it on her within these two months and get her kicked out at the board meeting. That way it will be justified and can win over others; it will be easier for the old man to explain," Ye Wei replied with a cold snort, clearly having devised some sinister plan.
Oh my goodness, how did I accidentally overhear all this? This is a major incident. If Ye Wei discovers that I'm eavesdropping, it won't just be a trivial matter; my life might be in danger. Thinking of this, Fei Hu quickly left the vicinity of the Vice President's Office.
As soon as he reached the first floor, Fei Hu took out his keys and was about to lock the elevator when he noticed someone on the 28th floor had called for it. That was close; if he had been any slower, his whereabouts might have been discovered. What if Ye Wei came down and asked him why he hadn’t locked the stairwell door? Fei Hu suddenly had an idea and quickly took two steps to the table, sat down in a chair, and pretended to be asleep.
The elevator doors opened with a whoosh. Fei Hu heard two sets of footsteps approaching him, so he hurriedly pretended to snore loudly.
"Hey! Who told you to sleep during work hours? The elevator isn't even locked; I'll talk to your team leader tomorrow," Ye Wei shouted while slapping the table.
Fei Hu rubbed his eyes and feigned waking up. He hurriedly said, "I'm sorry, Chairman; I'll lock it right away."
Standing behind Ye Wei, Wang Qian wore a slight smile and advised him, "Come on! He seems to have switched from day shift to night shift all of a sudden; he's probably not used to it."
Ye Wei snorted coldly and turned to walk out into the lobby. Seizing the opportunity, Wang Qian threw a flirtatious glance at Fei Hu. Normally, this would make him shiver all over, but tonight he silently cursed under his breath.
After all the commotion, Fei Hu returned home just before one o'clock. He washed his face haphazardly and lay on his bed, analyzing the conversation he had overheard between Wang Qian and Ye Wei that night. He realized how complicated things were within Shengwei Group. He had thought that no one could touch Ye Xiaofei, but it turned out that someone was plotting against her. Wang Qian's mention of smuggling shocked Fei Hu even more; he never expected that Wang Qian was involved in such activities during their trip to Hong Kong. No wonder they had encountered so many shady characters.
The more Fei Hu thought about it, the deeper he felt the waters of Shengwei Group were. Its growth was significantly tied to smuggling, which was a violation of national laws. Ye Wei was being quite reckless!
They were planning to frame Ye Xiaofei, who was a goddess in Fei Hu's eyes. He couldn't just stand by and do nothing, especially since he now knew the inside story. Should he find a way to warn Ye Xiaofei so she could prepare herself?
After thinking it over, Fei Hu felt uneasy. Ye Xiaofei had no feelings for him at all; if he approached her with this information, she would likely not believe him. Worse yet, he could end up getting himself into trouble while trying to be a hero. If she turned out to be unimpressed by his efforts, it would be quite embarrassing.
His head felt like it was about to explode, and despite his best efforts, Fei Hu couldn't come up with a good plan. Gradually, he drifted off into a dream.
"Hey! Lazy Long Hair, get up! The sun is already shining on your backside! Have you been kicked out again? This time I won't let you skip out on rent!" A woman's voice interrupted Fei Hu's pleasant dreams.
Irritated, Fei Hu got dressed and opened the door to find the Landlady standing there. He wondered why she seemed so concerned about his work today.
"What’s going on? Can’t a person sleep in?" Fei Hu asked grumpily.
The Landlady chuckled and replied, "Long Hair, why aren’t you at work? Sleeping during the day while everyone else is working hard to earn money? How can you sleep like that?"
Fei Hu rolled his eyes at her and coldly said, "With my hair this short, you still call me Long Hair? That’s ridiculous! And I’m sleeping in because I worked a night shift last night! Now leave me alone; I want to sleep."
The Landlady had intended to scold Fei Hu and assert her authority but found herself being berated instead. Slightly annoyed, she said, "Next month the rent is going up; you better be ready." With that, she turned and walked away like a barrel rolling down the street. Fei Hu spat in frustration at her retreating figure.
