A gentle breeze blew through, bringing a respite from the previous heat. At the entrance of Shengwei Group, a long line had formed, filled with young men in their twenties to thirties, as the company was hiring security guards.
Fei Hu had rushed out before dawn. He left a note for Sun Li, saying he was going out to make his way in the world. Looking around at the crowd in front and behind him, he counted over two hundred people, but they were only hiring five. The competition was fierce! It seemed that Shengwei Group was quite impressive if so many people were vying for a security position.
The dozens of candidates in front of Fei Hu were quickly called inside, but soon they all came back out. Some were shaking their heads and sighing, while others were cursing as they walked away. One of them shouted, "What kind of nonsense is this? It's harder to get hired as a security guard than as a Special Police officer! I'm a former special forces soldier and I couldn't even pass their tests. This is ridiculous!"
Hearing this, Fei Hu felt a chill run down his spine. If even those skilled individuals couldn't make it, he might be wasting his time. Soon it was his turn. In the center of the recruitment hall sat a young woman in a black skirt, slightly plump, with curly hair cascading over her shoulders and her bare legs exposed beneath her skirt. As Fei Hu entered, she glanced at him and adjusted her black-framed glasses.
Next to her stood two security guards, standing tall and straight, clearly trained professionals. From their badges, Fei Hu could see one was the security team leader and the other was a squad leader. Although they were about twenty meters away, Fei Hu's keen eyesight—honed from hunting with his grandfather in the mountains—allowed him to read their titles easily.
Fei Hu took a couple of steps forward. The woman turned out to be the HR manager named Helena. He noticed a small mole on her face; he took note of every detail and felt pleased that his eyesight hadn't diminished over the years.
"Step back! Who told you to move forward?" Helena reprimanded him loudly.
Wow, this woman has quite the temper! Fine, I'll step back. Fei Hu reluctantly took two steps back.
"Name, age, and what are your skills?" Helena asked coldly, like a block of ice.
Fei Hu paused briefly before responding: "Fei Hu, twenty-six years old. I used to work as a security guard and I know Chinese martial arts." His voice was loud enough that both security guards glanced at him.
Helena nodded at the team leader, who stepped forward and shouted, "Attention! At ease! Attention! About-face! March!" A series of basic commands followed; it seemed they were testing reaction speed and whether he had real experience as a security guard. Fortunately for Fei Hu, he executed every command perfectly—quickly and with proper posture.
Helena exchanged glances with the team leader before he asked, "What martial arts do you practice? Show us a set."
Fei Hu cupped his fists and said, "I'll demonstrate a set of Da Hong Quan." With that declaration, he began his routine—a series of punches and kicks taught to him by his grandfather. The hall became alive with movement; one could hear the rush of air from his pant legs as he moved fluidly through the forms, leaving the three recruiters stunned.
As soon as he finished his demonstration, Helena stood up and walked closer to him. She praised him repeatedly: "Not bad at all!" Fei Hu hadn't expected her to be so tall—almost matching his buzz cut height—but she looked no older than twenty-three or twenty-four and wore no makeup at all; even her legs were completely bare without stockings. This caught Fei Hu off guard.
Helena noticed that Fei Hu's eyes were not honest at all, as he was looking around her. She couldn't help but blush slightly and turned to the Security Team Leader, saying, "Team Leader Wang, this person has decent qualifications. I'll give him to you; let him work in the lobby. What do you think?"
"Sure! The young man is handsome and full of energy. Working in the lobby is perfect for him," Team Leader Wang said with a smile. Fei Hu then realized that Team Leader Wang was probably around forty years old, of average build, and had a friendly demeanor.
Hearing this, Fei Hu finally relaxed his anxious heart. It seemed he did have a chance; it was just a matter of whether he could seize it. If he didn't show up after watching TV, wouldn't this opportunity slip away again?
After filling out the paperwork and submitting his ID, he received a set of security uniforms and was told to report for work tomorrow. As soon as Fei Hu exited Shengwei Group's main gate, he ran off joyfully, attracting the attention of passersby who thought he was being chased by a thief.
Having not returned for several days, as soon as Fei Hu reached the small shop's entrance, Fat Girl spotted him. She hurriedly waved him over and whispered, "Come in quickly."
Fei Hu understood Fat Girl's concern; she was afraid her mother would hear and come looking for trouble with him. So he quietly slipped inside and sat down across from Fat Girl with a big smile.
"You dead Long Hair! You were gone for so many days. When I collected the rent the day before yesterday, my mom saw you hadn't come back for so long and thought you weren't living here anymore. She wanted to rent it to someone else, so I had no choice but to pay it for you first," Fat Girl said while sizing Fei Hu up.
Fei Hu slapped his forehead, realizing that it was time to pay rent again this month. However, all the money in his pocket had gone to the hospital. If it weren't for Fat Girl paying it for him, he would have ended up sleeping on the street tonight.
With a flushed face, Fei Hu said softly, "Thank you! But I don't have any money right now. I just found a job as a security guard; the salary is decent—two thousand five hundred a month. I'll pay you back as soon as I get my paycheck."
"Don't worry about it; this is my personal savings that my parents don't know about. Where are you working as a security guard? Such a high salary?" Fat Girl asked in surprise.
"Hehe, it's at Shengwei Group. The office building looks quite impressive; it's several dozen stories tall," Fei Hu said with a hint of pride because during his job application queue today, he heard people say that Shengwei Group ranks among the top in City A, and its employees enjoy excellent benefits.
Sure enough, when Fat Girl heard this, she jumped up excitedly and said, "Looks like you're finally turning things around! Shengwei is indeed quite good; getting in there shows you have some real capability."
Fei Hu smiled and teasingly asked Fat Girl, "You know about Shengwei Group too?"
"Oh my! You really are ignorant if you don't read or watch the news for even one day. Shengwei is very famous; they have reports on TV and in newspapers—everyone in City A knows about them," Fat Girl said while playfully rolling her eyes at Fei Hu.
"Hey! Who are you talking to? It's been so long!" As soon as Fei Hu heard the voice of the Landlady, his hair stood on end. He quickly slipped away, running to his room before she could appear.
After a few days away, a musty smell filled the room. Just as he finished tidying up, the phone rang. It was Sun Li calling. Fei Hu thought for a moment and pressed the answer button. Sun Li's slightly displeased voice came through: "What are you doing? Are you trying to deliver yourself to someone?"
Fei Hu paused for a moment and replied with a smile, "Don't be angry yet. I've found a security job that seems pretty good. I won't be leaving the company, and I hardly show my face outside. I don't believe they can find me like this."
Sun Li hesitated before saying, "Alright! If that's the case, just be careful. Call me if anything happens."
Fei Hu chuckled, "Of course!"
"Remember to come visit when you have time. Also, do you not have any money now? Why aren't you saying anything? You're really something," Sun Li sounded quite helpless.
"What do you want me to look at?" Fei Hu teased Sun Li on purpose.
Sun Li laughed, "You rascal, aren't you going to give me a kiss?"
Hearing this, Fei Hu got into the spirit of things and blew a kiss into the phone. People in this city really know how to add some romance even in a phone call. Lying on his bed, he couldn't help but think of Sun Li again; their seven or eight days together had made him reluctant to part with her.
In Ye Wu's living room, brightly lit and bustling, over ten young men with yellow hair stood around. Little Four stood at the front, head down and silent, while Ye Wu paced back and forth with his hands behind his back, looking very angry.
"You guys are such fools! You lost track of a living person and now come to tell me that this person is no longer in City A. Where do you think I can put my face?" Ye Wu couldn't help but kick Little Four in the rear. Little Four dodged just in time to avoid being kicked.
