Madwoman was packing her bags, preparing to stay with Xiao Tao at Hai Ping's house for a while.
In truth, she didn't want to go, but her daughter and son-in-law had written her more than ten letters, each one expressing their eagerness for her visit.
She had become a stranger to the Provincial Capital after living there for over a decade. Now, she felt like a country woman, and even returning to the county town, to the home where she had grown up, left her feeling lost. It would be difficult to get a good night's sleep in the Provincial Capital.
Tomorrow she would leave, and Xiaobinzi was clinging to Yezhi. "Wife, just one more time!" Yezhi ignored him with her eyes closed. He rolled over and pressed himself against her, and Yezhi angrily bumped her head against him. "Can't you just settle down for a moment?"
"I'm going to be gone for several months!"
"Go ahead!"
"I'll miss you!"
Yezhi opened her eyes and asked seriously, "Do you miss me as a person or just my body?"
Xiaobinzi, biting her neck, replied with a simple "you!" She chuckled lightly. "I miss you as a person! Then let's share our feelings."
"Just your body!" Xiaobinzi answered while his hands were busy. Yezhi's breathing quickened, but she didn't want to let him have his way so easily.
She tightened her legs together. "Yezhi!" Xiaobinzi called out in frustration.
Seeing her man's flustered state made Yezhi laugh heartily.
Xiaobinzi covered her mouth with his. After that, she tasted the bitter fruit of teasing her man.
Lin Haitao and Crazy Taiyi left, and everyone at home got busy with their own tasks.
In the Peach Orchard, the Peach Tree was taller than any others. Spots leisurely ate the weeds in the Peach Orchard while Xiao Fang reported on the performance of Earth's Rarity.
"Master, the Dead Old Man has replied!"
"What did he say?" By this time, her earlier excitement had faded.
"He said he could connect with the 21st century, but since you're not there, no one is helping him gather information. He can only do it himself and has only collected some online resources."
"He also said that Goode Glasses were given to you for free, just to gather some outdated information. Not only does he have to clean up your mess, but he also has to take time out of his busy schedule to answer your questions. He’s exhausted and doesn’t even know why." Who told the Dead Old Man to send her here? Otherwise, she wouldn't dare to bother him!
"Master, he also sent me ten episodes of Wind in the Willows, saying it's a show he's currently watching. Do you want to watch it together?"
"Wind in the Willows!" Yezhi definitely wanted to watch it. If there was one thing good about the 80s, it was that there wasn't much entertainment; watching TV dramas was such a decadent yet happy way to pass the time. "Hurry up and play it!"
...
Zhang Dou returned to Zhoujiatun with puffy eyes and saw Yezhi looking even more exhausted than he was. "Did you go rob a bank yesterday?"
Yezhi remained silent, her mind filled with TV drama plots. "You’re not thinking about Xiaobinzi so much that you can't sleep, are you?"
"Shut up!"
"Zhang Dou is back!" Yu Jianhua came out from the cellar. Zhang Dou took the basket of vegetables from his hands and complained, "Elder Brother Yu, you need to prepare more dishes today; I haven't had hot food in two days!"
"Is work at the police station that busy?" Busy? He was almost dying from being overworked! They were called for every trivial matter, and with so few people at their station, everyone had to do the work of three.
Yu Jianhua noticed his bad complexion and then looked at Yezhi; she hadn’t seemed very energetic these past few days either. He decided to cook something nourishing for both of them.
He walked over to Flying Dragon Farm and saw lively flying dragons jumping around, filling his heart with joy. Zhou Yiqiang proudly boasted in front of him, "These flying dragons are for breeding. Our flying dragons are not only wanted by the big restaurants in the county; do you know who those two buyers were who came the other day? They were from a real big restaurant in Province, and they offered this amount to buy our flying dragons." Zhou Yiqiang held up five fingers as a gesture.
Yu Jianhua happily said, "Then our flying dragons are becoming more valuable." Zhou Yiqiang nodded with a smile, "By the way! Which one do you want me to help you catch?"
Yu Jianhua smiled and shook his head, "Forget it, these are all breeding chickens, they are treasures that can make money." Zhou Yiqiang did not argue with Yu Jianhua. After walking around the Village and buying nothing, Yu Jianhua had no choice but to kill one of his two old hens, and an idea formed in his mind.
At mealtime, everyone had a bowl of ginseng chicken soup in front of them, but Zhang Dou and Yezhi had particularly large bowls. Elder Brother Yu had stewed the chicken until it was extremely tender; with a flick of the chopsticks, the meat separated from the bones. The aroma of the meat was accompanied by a strong medicinal fragrance, indicating that he had put in plenty of ingredients.
Unfortunately for Yezhi, there was no glutinous rice stuffed inside; otherwise, it would have been an authentic Korean royal dish. It seemed she would have to take a trip to Cosmic Mall to find some glutinous rice seeds.
Zhang Dou was so engrossed in eating that he nearly buried his head in the soup. After all, he had been gnawing on dry rations for two days; now that he finally had something hearty, he didn’t care about manners.
After finishing a large bowl of meat and soup, he finally felt alive again; his body was warm and comfortable.
After the meal, Elder Brother Yu told everyone from Hundred Steps Walk that he wanted to open a store to serve the villagers.
The family was curious: "What made you suddenly want to open a store?"
"I visited several farms today to buy some things for Zhang Dou and all of you to supplement your diet, but I ended up buying nothing. I think Village should have a store or something to meet our own needs."
Zhang Dou was deeply moved, "Elder Brother Yu! You are my real brother. Let's open this store; I will invest in it."
Yezhi looked at Zhang Dou, "Oh~ where did this big spender come from?"
"What do you mean by big spender? I’m not rich; I just have a small amount saved up."
"Less! Auntie will also invest." The family became more animated as they spoke, and within a few days, the store was established. Outside Yezhi's house, in addition to Sister Luo's Tailoring sign, there was now another sign for Small Grocery.
At first, Small Grocery sold only basic items like salt, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sewing supplies, and stationery. Later on, Xiaobinzi brought over a batch of canned fruits and milk powder. The little shop finally took shape and at least had some rare items. However, this was not the store Yu Jianhua envisioned; he announced in Village that anyone with chickens, ducks, fish... could sell them at his place or buy from him.
It became clear to Yezhi that Elder Brother Yu wanted to open more than just a store; calling it a supermarket would be more accurate.
Xiao Cheng looked at the fields of dead rice seedlings with a defeated expression, while the spirited young people from the Village wore sorrowful faces; they had managed to kill the seedlings overnight!
Zhou Village Head didn't know how to comfort them. He felt heartbroken himself. He and Xiao Cheng coincidentally went to Yezhi's house seeking solace.
However, Yezhi, having done something wrong, had already slipped away.
On her way to the Provincial Capital, Yezhi had decided that she needed to rent a place. Even if Xiaobinzi's sister could accommodate her, it wasn't their home; it was better for her to have her own space.
She arrived near Xiaobinzi's school and asked around at the place where the elderly women gathered. A kind lady eagerly led her to see a rental.
The house was in a shared courtyard, a small room with a communal kitchen in the hallway and no private bathroom; the public restroom was 100 meters away.
No matter how affordable and cheap the lady claimed it was, she didn't want to rent it.
"Young lady, do you still want to live in a place with its own bathroom?" The lady implied that she could afford better.
"I want to rent a place with a bathroom; ideally, it should be quiet and have its own entrance." After saying this, Yezhi didn't wait for her response and headed towards a house she liked. She walked to a small high-rise on the left side of the campus. When she expressed her intention to rent, an elderly man said he had an apartment available but could only rent it for a year.
Yezhi thought that was acceptable and followed the man to see the apartment. He explained that the place belonged to his son and daughter-in-law; his son worked in geology and was rarely home, while his daughter-in-law was pregnant and staying at her mother's house.
As soon as he opened the door, Yezhi liked the place; however, it was filled with the owner's personal touches, making her feel a bit shy about living there.
"Sir, if I mess up the place or if it doesn't look the same when I return after a year, would you still rent it to me?"
"You are such an honest child! Just because you are sincere, I have no doubt renting this place to you will be just fine!"
Yezhi felt quite burdened by this and quickly called Xiao Fang out to take comprehensive photos of both rooms.
The elderly man wrote up the rental agreement and told Yezhi that she didn't need to buy bedding as there were some available in the cupboard. He also mentioned that if she needed anything, she could find him on the first floor.
Once everything was settled, Yezhi bought some figurines and headed to her sister's house. As soon as she entered the building where her sister lived, a well-meaning person asked her who she was looking for.
Yezhi ignored her, but the woman kept asking. Yezhi felt helpless against these overly enthusiastic aunties, but thankfully, "Yezhi! You're here!"
"Mom!"
"So you're a relative of the Little Ren Family!" The Madwoman, who wasn't very familiar with her, grabbed Yezhi and headed home.
"Mom, this auntie is really nosy."
"Don't talk about people behind their backs."
"Oh!"
Seeing that Yezhi looked a bit downcast, the Madwoman explained, "Let's talk inside. There are too many ears in this courtyard." Yezhi laughed; it seemed her mom had suffered quite a bit from the "nosy aunties."
As soon as they entered the house, the Madwoman said, "I've been looking forward to your visit every day. This time, you have to take me back with you!"
"Sure, a golden nest or a silver nest can't compare to our Zhoujiatun's doghouse."
"Exactly!"
