Yu Jianhua and his wife rarely return to the county town, and as always, the wife is most concerned about her husband's health. Early in the morning, Luo Fengjuan took her husband to the county hospital for a check-up. To their surprise, when they sat in front of Dr. He, even the hospital director was startled.
"Doctor, Yu Jianhua was critically ill when he was discharged from the hospital; he had only a couple of months to live. Now he looks no different from a normal person, even more energetic than usual!"
The director, an elderly man with a white beard, stroked his beard thoughtfully and said, "What medication did you prescribe for him?"
"Strangely enough, I only prescribed painkillers; I didn't prescribe anything else. When I asked him, he said that after moving to the countryside, a Barefoot Doctor gave him some traditional Chinese medicine."
A thoughtful smile appeared on the director's face. "Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes a holistic approach and can be quite effective as an adjunct therapy. However, for someone in critical condition, Western medicine has its advantages. I suggest you arrange for Yu Jianhua to be hospitalized so we can conduct a thorough examination."
Dr. He nodded and said, "Alright, I'll make the arrangements!"
Luo Fengjuan nervously held her husband's hand while Yu Jianhua reassured her with a pat, saying, "I'm fine; nothing will happen!" Luo Fengjuan forced a smile in response.
Dr. He opened the door and nodded at Yu Jianhua and his wife. "Less, I've arranged for you to have a detailed physical examination; you'll have to stay in the hospital for a few days."
"Dr. He, it won't be...?" Luo Fengjuan stood up nervously, hesitant to ask further.
Dr. He reassured her, "Xiao Luo, don't worry; Less's current health is surprisingly good!"
"Really!" Tears welled up in Luo Fengjuan's eyes while Yu Jianhua felt confident since he knew his body best.
"We still need to check how much Less's condition has improved. Can you show me the medications or prescriptions you've taken?"
If Barefoot Aunt's prescription could help him, she wouldn't object; however, the medicine given by Yezi seemed mysterious—there were unfamiliar characters on the bottle. Yu Jianhua had an idea not to trouble Yezi further. "I can write down the traditional Chinese medicine prescription from memory." Dr. He quickly handed him paper and pen.
By the time Yu Jianhua's written prescription was placed in the director's office, night had fallen.
The elderly director had some knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine; as he admired the brilliance of the prescription, he asked, "Is everything arranged for Yu Jianhua's hospitalization?"
Dr. He replied promptly, "It's all set; Yu Jianhua said he would be admitted tomorrow and will go home today to pack his things." The elderly man nodded in satisfaction. Perhaps there might be some breakthrough regarding this dreaded disease called "cancer" in Yu Jianhua.
On a summer night, fresh and beautiful, the sky was as if it had been washed clean, with not a trace of cloud or mist. The full moon hung high, and the stars sparkled brightly. Luo Fengjuan admired it with great interest, saying, "Do you think that is what people often refer to as the Cowherd and Weaver Girl stars?"
"Qixi has just passed!"
Luo Fengjuan cast a charming glance at Yu Jianhua. "As if I didn't know Qixi had already passed! Leaf Sister said Qixi is a festival for all lovers, and the Cowherd and Weaver Girl are the love deities protecting them. I made a wish to the love deity that day. Although Dr. He hasn't said you are completely well, your health will definitely improve!"
Yu Jianhua held Luo Fengjuan's hand tightly; it was these hands that had supported him through his darkest times.
"Elder Brother Yu, Sister Luo!" Yezi's call was somewhat disruptive, but Yu Jianhua and his wife didn't mind and cheerfully approached. "Sister, what are you doing here?"
"I'm here to pick you up!" Yezhi had waited long enough without seeing them, so she came out to look for them.
A deeper smile appeared on Yu Jianhua's face. If he had ever complained about the unfairness of fate, it had vanished in the presence of the most precious love and family ties in the world. "Let's go home!"
"Dad, that auntie is so fierce! If it weren't for Zhou Mama and Sister Yezi, Xiao Fan would definitely have been beaten into a pig's head!"
Yezhi felt embarrassed; she was such an adult yet still needed Xiao Fan to defend her. Xiao Fan was too easy to fool; she only complained a couple of times when she returned home, saying she couldn't face his parents. She didn't expect him to take it so seriously. "Cough! Elder Brother Yu, Sister Luo, it's my fault for not protecting Xiao Fan well. I swear it won't happen again!"
The couple looked at Yezi's serious face and laughed. Yezi's face gradually turned red. "I mean what I say!"
"Yezi, it's not a big deal. Besides, this isn't your fault; it was an accident. We believe in your care for Xiao Fan just as much as we do as parents. So when you act so distant, it makes me and Elder Brother Yu a bit unhappy!"
"Mom, Dad, please don't be unhappy! It really isn't Sister Yezi's fault; she saved me! It's like saving from suffering...!" Xiao Fan scratched his head anxiously. What did saving from suffering even mean? Was she like Sun Wukong?
Unexpectedly, she seemed so great in Xiao Fan's eyes! Yezhi proudly lifted her head. Lin Haitao couldn't hold back his laughter; this seemed to signal everyone else—Yu Jianhua, Luo Fengjuan, Aunt Zhou, Wolf Child, even Niu Niu and Black Treasure—all burst into laughter. Xiao Fan looked confused but smiled foolishly when he saw everyone else laughing.
In the morning, the birds chirped on the branches. After a hearty breakfast, the whole family sent Yu Jianhua to the hospital. Wolf Child was quite popular among doctors and nurses at this hospital. Sugar Balls stuffed her hands full of treats and proudly shared some with Xiao Fan before giving some to Yezhi, Aunt Zhou, and Elder Brother Yu. The Chief Physician who used to take special care of Wolf Child shed tears of emotion. "Yezhi, Wolf Child meeting you is truly her blessing." Yezhi felt it was fate that brought them together.
After leaving the hospital, Xiaobinzi rushed off to work while Aunt Zhou and Yezi walked with the two children through the bustling streets.
Aunt Zhou frowned tightly. "Yezi, where in the city can we find furniture? Look at Xiaolin's family; they have nothing prepared! There’s so much to get ready! You Sister Luo needs to take care of Elder Brother Yu in the hospital; someone has to manage things at home too! I'm going back to the village tomorrow; what will you do?"
"Auntie, don't worry; I can handle it!" Keeping things simple would suffice, but she dared not mention this to Aunt Zhou since Aunt Zhou had spent all her savings determined to make her wedding grand. In truth, she wasn't quite ready for it yet; they even said they would wait until Xiaobinzi's wedding report was approved before setting a date.
"Wolf Child!" She pointed excitedly at an old lady pushing a wooden cart.
Aunt Zhou didn't wait for Yezhi to react and bought each of the two children one. Yezhi took two Popsicles from Xiaofan's hand, saying, "If you eat too much, you'll get a stomachache!"
Xiaofan pouted and protested, "It's not fair! Why don't you share with Wolf Sister?"
"Your Wolf Sister has a big appetite. What can I say? You're small, so you can't eat as much!" Yezhi mumbled with a Popsicle in her mouth.
Aunt Zhou gave her a light slap on the backside. "You just like to bully Xiaofan. If you want to eat, Aunt will buy it for you." After saying that, she went back to the old lady selling Popsicles.
Yezhi watched Aunt Zhou peel the Popsicle for her and couldn't help but laugh. "Aunt, you should eat too!"
"I'm not thirsty; you all eat!"
Wolf Child finished her own Popsicle and stared at Aunt Zhou with wide eyes. Aunt Zhou handed her the Popsicle in her hand, and she was so happy that her eyes nearly disappeared. She devoured it in two or three bites and even chewed up the wooden stick.
Aunt Zhou licked the syrup that dripped onto her palm from the melting Popsicle. It was sweet! No wonder kids loved it.
Yezhi split the Popsicle in half and held it up to Aunt Zhou's mouth. Aunt Zhou dodged, saying, "Save it for Kid! I can just drink water when I get home!"
Yezhi said threateningly, "Aunt, if you don't eat it, I'll buy all the Popsicles from the old lady!"
Aunt Zhou's face turned pale green at this wasteful daughter's words. "Fine, I'll eat! Is that okay?" Aunt Zhou ate with a sense of grievance, but inside she felt as sweet as honey!
