Zhang Dou supported Lin Haitao as they walked into the room. Lin Haitao's face was pale as he lay on the kang, weakly saying, "Yezhi, I scared you, but I'm fine!" It was truly a beautiful misunderstanding; she wasn't afraid of the blood-soaked appearance of Wild Boar, so how could she be frightened by such a minor injury?
Zhang Dou exclaimed excitedly, "What do you mean you're fine? You had nearly twenty stitches on your head and lost a bucket of blood! And you still say you're fine?"
Yezhi nodded; twenty stitches meant the cut must be deep. "Zhang Dou, I must correct you. If he lost a bucket of blood, Xiaobinzi would have already seen the King of Hell! Ha ha!"
Zhang Dou angrily slapped the kang table. "Yezhi, don't say that!" Yezhi restrained her smile, feeling puzzled: what was going on? Wasn't it just a joke?
Zhang Dou also felt he had overreacted and rubbed his nose. "It's all my fault; otherwise, Xiaobinzi wouldn't have been injured. It's all my fault..."
"Douzi, I'm fine; stop worrying about it!" Lin Haitao really didn't blame Zhang Dou. When he first faced criminals with a gun, he had hesitated too; he was just luckier than Zhang Dou. The mission wasn't as dangerous as this one, and besides, Zhang Dou had adjusted in time. If it weren't for Zhang Dou firing his gun, he might have truly met his end as Yezhi said.
Although Yezhi didn't understand what urgent situation had occurred, from Zhang Dou's reaction and Xiaobinzi's words, she understood a bit. "Zhang Dou, don't worry; I will take good care of Xiaobinzi!"
Zhang Dou looked serious. "Yezhi, I'm entrusting Hai Tao to you!"
"Okay! Okay!" To reassure Zhang Dou, Yezhi patted her chest and promised to make sure Xiaobinzi would be lively again soon. Lin Haitao smiled; he wasn't a child who needed someone to take care of him.
With Yezhi's assurance, Zhang Dou finally relaxed his tense heart. "Then I'll head back to the station. Hai Tao, make sure to rest well; I'll come back after my shift!" After saying that, he put on his police cap and prepared to leave.
At that moment, Yezhi suddenly called out, "Zhang Dou, wait a minute!" She hurried back to her room and pulled out the Indestructible spray. Holding the spray canister, she sprayed it towards Zhang Dou. "Yezhi, what is this?" Zhang Dou asked while pinching his nose.
"Good stuff; it's disinfectant! You guys are out all day; think of how many germs you attract!"
"Then Xiaobinzi needs it even more. You wait a moment and spray him later!" Yezhi readily agreed and sent Zhang Dou off before diving into Xiaobinzi's room.
Xiaobinzi was lightly closing his eyes, lying on the kang, while Niu Niu was rolling around at his feet. Yezhi knew he wasn't asleep and poked him awake with a finger, demanding, "Tell me, what happened!"
There was nothing to hide anyway, so Lin Haitao briefly recounted the events. After clarifying the situation, Yezhi finally understood Zhang Dou's nervousness.
Yezhi picked up Niu Niu, who was causing trouble at Xiaobinzi's feet, and let him rest properly. She then went to the kitchen, thinking about what to make to nourish Xiaobinzi.
"Master, Miss Dulisa is looking for you!" While Yezhi was cooking Red Dates porridge, she put down the wooden spoon and focused her mind.
Dulisa stood in a glass greenhouse filled with vibrant flowers and several staff members coming and going. "Dear Ye, Sister Fo-Ti has sold for 7 million. Do you want the money transferred to an account or in gold?"
Yezhi was stunned and couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. "Sister Du, Fo-Ti was a gift I gave you! Why did you sell it?" Dulisa looked even more surprised. "Gift? Didn't you say last time to have me sell Fo-Ti for you?"
"Sister Du, that was months ago!"
Dulisa put her hands on her hips. "Then why didn't you clarify? I went through the trouble of inviting a bunch of old women to bid." Since filming with Xianruipu, Dulisa's emotions had been extremely unstable, as if she could explode at any moment.
"Sister Du, just forget about giving me that 7 million. You can buy something you like!" Dulisa didn't act coy and accepted it directly.
"Dear Ye, after I finish filming, I'll take you to travel in Endless Forest."
"Perfect! I had that plan too; we might as well go together!"
The sudden appearance of Xianruipu made Yezhi excited as if she were seeing her favorite star! Unfortunately, Dulisa wore a sour expression; otherwise, this handsome duo would surely dazzle many viewers.
"How rude! Why are you interrupting when others are speaking?" Dulisa coldly mocked.
Yezhi shook her head; she felt that Dulisa was like a hedgehog—prickly and defensive whenever Xianruipu got close. It seemed Xianruipu had anticipated Dulisa's reaction and was teasing her playfully!
So the saying goes: the ones who understand you best are often not your friends, but your enemies.
Dulisa's eyes kept wandering over Yezhi, and she shot her a fierce glare before abruptly cutting off the video call. Yezhi was dissatisfied; why couldn't she just let her admire her a little longer?
"Xiao Fang! Do we have a lot of emails every day?" Xiao Fang, who was replying to emails, looked up. "Master, yes, with the New Year approaching, fans are very concerned about whether you'll attend. Cabrera Planet has already held the 500th award ceremony for the flagship program 'Annual Welcome Star.'"
Yezhi felt delighted; there was even an award ceremony to attend, as if she had truly entered the entertainment industry. Xiao Fang, sensing her thoughts, said earnestly, "Master, you are now undoubtedly a popular star in the cosmic entertainment world." Yezhi knew she had quite a few fans, but when it came to being a star, she didn't really feel much. She was just a shadow of herself—neither her true self nor her whole self.
"Xiao Fang, should I go?"
"Master, we haven't received an invitation yet." After feeling a bit overly sentimental, Yezhi chuckled lightly and began discussing Xiaobinzi's injury with Xiao Fang, instructing her to pick some healing items from the Cosmic Mall Website.
Lin Haitao woke up groggy and unsure how long he had been asleep. When he finally opened his eyes, it was already dark outside. He leaned against the wall and made his way to the kitchen where Yezhi was humming a tune while stir-frying mountain mushrooms.
"Why are you up? Didn't the doctor tell you to rest more?"
Lin Haitao's voice was a bit hoarse. "Thirsty!" Yezhi grabbed a water jug and poured half a jug of water for him. Lin Haitao greedily drank it all and finally felt much better.
"You're awake; go sit in the main room for a bit. Dinner will be ready soon."
Soon enough, a pot of red and green jujube porridge that didn't look very appetizing, a plate of salty and crispy pickles, a dish of stir-fried mountain mushrooms with shredded meat, and a bowl of fried egg sauce were placed on the table.
Lin Haitao held his bowl and ate with great difficulty. He hated eating red dates the most, yet Yezhi insisted he eat more for blood nourishment. This made him feel nauseous and without appetite due to his dizziness. After finally finishing the jujube porridge in his bowl, he thought the nightmare was over.
Little did he know that this was just the beginning of his nightmare. The next day, Zhang Dou brought over a chicken, and Yezhi made jujube and goji berry chicken soup for him. To be honest, the soup smelled delicious and enticing, but tasted sweet in his mouth. Lin Haitao, being a pure Northeastern man, simply could not accept this Southern style of cooking. However, not wanting to hurt Yezhi's feelings, he had no choice but to swallow it down like medicine. After finishing the chicken soup, he found out that Yezhi had somehow procured high-quality donkey-hide gelatin. His meals then revolved around "the female-exclusive donkey-hide gelatin," including donkey-hide gelatin jujube egg soup, donkey-hide gelatin rib soup, donkey-hide gelatin dragon bone porridge, and donkey-hide gelatin stewed chicken... He felt like his blood was surging; clearly he had overdone it.
After resting at home for a week, Lin Haitao not only continued to hate eating red dates but also developed a deep hatred for donkey-hide gelatin. He tidied up his clothes and stepped out of the house; today marked the end of his sick leave and his return to work.
"Xiaobinzi, don't rush!" Yezhi rushed out of her room, grabbed the Indestructible spray, and thoroughly sprayed Xiaobinzi.
After sending Xiaobinzi off, Yezhi hurried to school. She slung her Cloth Bag over her shoulder and arrived at the classroom, where Zhang Ling was chatting with a few classmates. Yezhi sat down at her desk and focused on her notes. Perhaps she had adapted to the cold weather recently; she no longer felt as drowsy as before. She attentively listened to the morning classes and walked out of the classroom with Zhang Ling.
As they reached the large iron gate, Sun Dajiang, who was waiting at the gatehouse, called out, "Yezhi!" Upon seeing Sun Dajiang, Yezhi's eyes flashed with a hint of helplessness. She regretted not being harsher with him last time. However, thinking about it, it wasn't entirely Sun Dajiang's fault; they had only met a few times, so he couldn't possibly be infatuated with her! But what did he want from her?
"Dajiang, hello! What do you need from me?" Sun Dajiang looked Yezhi up and down, clearly impressed.
Perhaps it was due to better nutrition lately; Yezhi had gained some roundness, her skin appeared even fairer, and her bright eyes seemed to speak. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, and she wore a blue floral cotton jacket paired with dark blue cotton pants that hugged her curves.
Sun Dajiang's gaze lingered on Yezhi's figure as he recalled what his mother used to say: women with curvy figures not only have wealth but can also save money! Yezhi stood out in every way; he initially thought she was a gentle girl but found her sharp-tongued instead. He figured that once he married her, he could train her properly.
"Dajiang, what do you need from me?" Yezhi noticed Sun Dajiang's gaze but didn't want to react too harshly just because he looked at her.
"It's nothing; I just wanted to see you. Yezhi, it's almost noon; let's have lunch together," Sun Dajiang said hopefully. It was freezing outside, and he had come specifically to see her. If she rejected him once, it would be fine; rejecting him a second time might lead to complications. Finally, Yezhi gently nodded and brought Zhang Ling along as company while heading to a small roadside eatery near the Education Committee.
Yezhi and Zhang Ling squeezed onto a long bench side by side while Sun Dajiang sat across from them. They each ordered a bowl of hand-pulled noodles. The atmosphere around them was lively as Yezhi leaned in to whisper to Zhang Ling. She wasn't intentionally ignoring Sun Dajiang; it was just that there wasn't much for them to talk about. The noodles arrived quickly.
"Yezhi girl, we aren't strangers anymore, right?" Yezhi nodded. Sun Dajiang continued, "I'm older than you; calling you 'sister' isn't inappropriate!"
Yezhi looked up; 'sister' felt too intimate. "Dajiang, you're just like the people from my village; just call me Yezhi!" Sun Dajiang wasn't entirely satisfied but didn't want to ruin the mood either, so he kept quiet. It seemed like Yezhi and Zhang Ling had agreed on something as they quickly finished their noodles. Sun Dajiang had planned to take his time eating and slowly build rapport, but that plan fell through. All three of them scrambled to pay for the meal, and in the end, Sun Dajiang won due to his height advantage. When Yezhi tried to give him money, he insisted on refusing it. Suddenly, Yezhi felt like the bowl of noodles had lodged in her throat; it was quite uncomfortable!
