Chapter 291: Expedition Team Shizai Xiaoqing
Before leaving, I still declined Major Ma's kind invitation to work for him. To be honest, I am someone who prefers to avoid trouble.
As for the company's matters, I treated it like a hands-off approach, leaving everything to Xianxian. Although he complained a lot in my ear, I managed to hold on until just before I was about to be shot in the back. With a quick motion, I closed the door and went upstairs. Before taking a shower, I went to check on Lime.
Lime naturally lived at my house. While my home isn't particularly large, it's not small either, especially since it only accommodates me, my dad, and Lime, making it feel quite empty.
The light in Lime's room was off, and I initially thought he had already gone to sleep. However, I was surprised to find him leaning against the bed, gazing out at the starry sky. I suddenly remembered that he was likely the only one at home today since my dad had gone to meet a friend. So, he probably hadn't cooked for himself. I asked, "Lime, have you eaten dinner?" It had been a while since I called him 'Lime'; saying it now felt quite nostalgic!
"I'm not hungry," Lime replied lightly, still looking out at the stars.
So that meant he hadn't eaten. I sighed. The window was open, and the curtains were drawn back, allowing a clear view of the night sky. I walked into his room and sat down on the edge of his bed. I placed the materials that Dr. Zhang and Fu Gao Ren had shown me earlier beside him and said, "When you have time, take a look at these two documents. They were brought by Dr. Zhang and Fu Gao Ren. You don't have to read them if you don't want to; they're mainly just to keep you entertained." Given Lime's personality, he would never leak any information; it would take an exceptionally strong force to extract any clues from him. So my biggest worry was what idle Lime might do.
"Okay," Lime responded but seemed lost in thought.
"You know my phone number; if anything comes up, just give us a call." Before leaving, I reminded him again with some concern. However, seeing his indifferent demeanor made me feel like an old nagging woman as I called Wang Yi, asking him to send someone sharp over tomorrow to take good care of Lime.
Upon hearing this, Wang Yi was reluctant and said directly, "Why pick someone else? With Azure Brother's personality, who do you think can handle such a big shot besides me? So I'll roll out my sleeping bag and report for duty first thing tomorrow morning! Haha~"
"Well then, thanks for your help!" What Wang Yi said made sense; given Lime's personality, anyone who didn't genuinely like him would likely find him quite difficult. Thus, Wang Yi was indeed the best choice. However, I had overlooked the workload he usually handled; starting tomorrow, such a prominent figure in The League of Shadows would become Lime's personal caretaker. This seemed a bit like misusing talent!
Forget it, never mind, I quickly washed up and went to bed.
...
After a sleepless night, early the next morning, Wang Yi had indeed arrived at my house. He had the key, so when I got up and saw him smiling broadly, I wasn't too surprised.
Life went on in this mundane way, but reality would not let us stay at ease for long.
That day, I was chatting with my dad when suddenly the phone at home rang. Generally, very few people call our home phone, so when I answered it with suspicion, a low and cold voice came from the other end, “Feng Zhengyu?”
“Dad, it's for you.” I said as I handed the phone to my dad. I didn't know what they talked about; no, I should say I didn't know what that person said to my dad. I only saw his face turn pale, and then the call ended. My dad sat down with a heavy heart.
Before I could ask what was going on, my dad said with a serious expression, “I have something to take care of these days; you don't need to come with me.”
“Dad, what are you talking about?” I shot him an unhappy glance. “Do you not trust your son's abilities?” Now that I think about it, ever since I encountered my dad in the Flower Mountain Caves, I hadn't shown him any martial skills, so he probably thought I was still the same as before.
But in reality, I was mistaken again. He sighed and said, “You already know the truth; what's happening now is purely personal business. You don't need to get involved.”
“I...” Just as I was speaking, Wang Yi walked in holding a black delivery package. “Feng Bo, your package!” He said as he handed it to my dad.
I was sure my dad had never had a habit of online shopping, so this package definitely wasn't bought by him. Yet he seemed to have known someone would deliver a package without any surprise; instead, his expression was somewhat grave. Connecting the earlier phone call with my dad's reaction, I knew these two things were definitely related.
So before my dad could reach for it, I stood up and snatched the package away roughly and tore it open forcefully to see what was inside. My dad saw this and it was too late for him to stop me; he could only let out a faint sigh.
The photo that was sent to me was still just a single image. The background depicted a very dilapidated house overgrown with weeds, and the focus was on a woman with disheveled hair. Her limbs were bound by chains, pinned to a wooden cross, and blood could be seen seeping from one of her black-red sleeves.
Her long hair, reaching down to her thighs, was extremely messy and appeared dirty, tangled together.
Faintly visible through the chaotic strands of hair was a pale gray face. Her eyes were also gray, hollow and devoid of life, mixed with deep despair and helplessness.
Shara! This was my immediate reaction upon seeing the person in the photo!
In short, this woman looked like a prisoner; her clothes were covered in mud. I even thought I saw flies buzzing around her head. This was blatant abuse of women!
I handed the photo to my dad in confusion, thinking that the woman in the picture looked somewhat familiar, as if I had seen her somewhere before! With that thought in mind, I quickly ran into my room, gathered some materials, and returned to sit on the sofa.
After seeing the photo, my dad was on the verge of exploding. Although he didn't show any obvious signs of anger, ever since he absorbed the spirit of Mountain Ghost, my perception had greatly improved. I could clearly sense his fury and murderous intent!
At that moment, I flipped to another photo. It was quite old—not just the photo itself but the scene it captured. In it was a little girl with two braided pigtails. She had two cute dimples when she smiled and looked innocent and adorable. I heard she had a lively personality, and her name was Shizai Xiaoqing, one of the members of the expedition team back then!
