As soon as both of my feet stepped onto the platform, the wooden boards I had just crossed silently disappeared behind me...
Just as that person said, only three of us could go; anyone trying to follow would be impossible. Besides, we didn't want to gamble with everyone's lives.
The closer I got to the "Divine Tree" at the center of the abyss, the more I felt a presence that was both sacred and evil. Why did I feel such a contradictory yet harmonious sensation? I didn't know; in any case, my emotions were also conflicted.
"Are we really supposed to climb that tree and then descend step by step?" Xianxian asked bitterly in front of me.
"Anyway, they didn't tell me how to get down or the route." After saying that, I thought carefully and realized they indeed hadn't mentioned it.
I heard Xianxian chuckle and say, "Lime, what about you? Do you know the route?"
"Not a clue," Lime replied coolly, casually tossing out two words.
"Well then, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I refuse to believe that with This Lord around, we can't find a way out!" Xianxian once again displayed his extreme narcissism. I could only roll my eyes in silence; his thick skin was truly hard to compliment. With Lime and me here, he still dared to say such things~ (eye roll).
Xianxian suddenly stopped in his tracks, and I almost bumped into him. I heard him question Lime in confusion, "Why did you stop?"
That was what I wanted to ask too. So after Xianxian asked, I curiously stared at the two figures ahead. The chilly air hit my face; my skin felt cold, and I sensed the heavy atmosphere.
"We're blocked," Lime's voice came from ahead, and I seemed to detect a hint of helplessness.
What exactly is blocking us? I stood on tiptoe desperately trying to see, but after a long while, all I could see were the backs of their heads and figures. The scene ahead was completely obscured.
"Hey, hey, hey, the two in front, could you please squat down so I can take a look too?" I quickly said, curious about the troublesome matter that even Lime found difficult.
"The little shorty is really a hassle," Xianxian chuckled lightly and complied by half-squatting down, and Lime did the same. Although Xianxian's remark about "little shorty" made me feel an urge to kick him in the backside, their posture entertained me, so I decided to let it slide for now.
As they both squatted down, I looked ahead, and my heart skipped a beat. Goosebumps instantly covered my body, and all the hair on my skin stood on end.
Before me stood a massive tree emitting a faint green glow, and just a step away from Lime, it was crawling with people!
No, to be precise, what I saw—those densely packed figures on the tree—were all corpses! The clothes of these people had completely rotted away, turning black and foul-smelling. All exposed skin, including their faces and hands, appeared blackish-purple. Their completely black eyes resembled swirling abysses, sending chills down my spine. Some of those eyes were even green, making it all the more unsettling.
They lay there like animals in bizarre postures, motionless on the tree. Some bodies emitted Green Light; others had only Eyeballs glowing with Green Light; while some showed no light at all! The reason for my rising fear was that all those "people" had their eyes wide open, staring at us without blinking!
Those eyes were hollow and lifeless yet conveyed an undeniable sense of being watched. Did they have thoughts? I didn't know, but I believed that even if they did, these "people" wouldn’t communicate with us. I could tell that in their eyes there was nothing but coldness—endless coldness—that sent shivers down my spine.
The entrance to the tree was completely blocked. If we wanted to climb this divine tree, we would have to step over their bodies. But would they really not rush at us?
There were only three of us against thousands of them!
The disparity in strength was overwhelming; it felt like we had no chance at all. Whether they would attack was perhaps what Lime had considered from the very beginning.
"What should we do now?" These Zongzi were blocking our way; we couldn't really step over them, could we? And we couldn’t just stand here waiting either. Given how they hadn’t moved from the start, it seemed they intended to confront us to the end.
"The only way is to lure them away," Lime and Xianxian had already stood up. After Lime said this, Xianxian asked, "How do we lure them away?"
As soon as Xianxian asked this question, it suddenly struck me like a consciousness awakening—having Lime around meant not just I had stopped thinking; Xianxian seemed to be leaning towards that direction too. Look at this; we were completely relying on Lime now...
However, having someone with incredible abilities nearby makes one feel much safer!
Lime lightly shook her head and tentatively said, "Fire? Food?"
"Those methods can be tried!" I said as I took out a lighter to ignite the torch and handed it to Xianxian, who then passed it to Lime in front of us. After all, it was difficult to adjust our order with the three of us, so we mainly relied on Lime to lead the way.
The flickering flames were particularly eye-catching, trailing a bright streak behind them that illuminated the scene ahead. Just as we widened our eyes to observe the movements in front of us, those previously motionless corpses began to stir, their low growls sending chills down my spine.
Suddenly, the flame was extinguished, and I heard Lime sigh, "It’s no use; it will only anger them."
These were Zongzi living in darkness. Creatures that dwell in darkness are rarely unafraid of fire, but there are many different reactions to fear. We thought these Zongzi would scatter at the sight of flames, but instead, they merely stirred restlessly, indicating they would be difficult to deal with.
We encountered significant trouble right from the first challenge. The thought of those Zongzi staring at us from all over the divine tree made me feel unsteady as I stepped forward...
"How about using food? What do you think they like to eat?" I pondered while stroking my chin.
"I think they would prefer fresh blood and human flesh!" Xianxian stated seriously with terrifying and nauseating words.
"Then it's perfect! For our bright future, you should make a small sacrifice!" I surprisingly joined in on the rather dull banter.
The outcome was predictable; whether it was fire or food, these Zongzi stubbornly blocked our path and refused to leave. Just as I was feeling overwhelmed...
