Chapter 232: The Broken Memory
The sudden appearance of Lime took us all by surprise, and we were also very pleased. We thought it would take a lot of effort to find him from so far away, but unexpectedly, he came out on his own and led us out of danger.
"Lime, are you here to find the Box of Ten Thousand Bones? Did you find it?" What I really wanted to ask was what exactly the Box of Ten Thousand Bones was.
Lime shook his head, seemingly unwilling to speak.
"What about Brother Pei?" Cold Snow looked at Lime and asked with concern.
I took off my headlamp and held it in my hands, noticing that Lime glanced at Cold Snow with a complex expression in his eyes but said nothing.
There were six of us who came down, and now only Wang Yi and Pei Zi were still missing. It was impossible not to worry.
"How about we go look for them? I'm worried about Wang Yi too." As Xianxian spoke, she started to walk away but was stopped by Lime. "It's too dangerous to go out now. I feel like a force has awakened inside."
"A force?" Xianxian frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Lime pursed his lips slightly and then said, "I don't know; suddenly it just feels wrong."
I had a strange feeling in my heart and quickly asked, "When did you start feeling that something was off?"
"About an hour ago," Lime replied.
Oh no! Could it be…
I looked at Xianxian in surprise, and saw that Xianxian was also thoughtfully looking at me. Estimating the time, I realized that Lime must have felt something unusual when I entered the Black Diamond Gate and saw the Flower of Life along with the images! Was this a coincidence or a cause-and-effect relationship?
I leaned more towards the latter. Just as I was about to tell Lime, he waved his hand and said lightly, "It's safe here; let's go find the others."
I knew that when Lime said "we," he meant just me and Xianxian. It seemed like he was intentionally trying to leave Yu Yu and Xue Er behind.
"Yu Yu, Xue Er, please take care of him," I said to Yu Yu while pointing at Shen Ming. Since Lime didn't want any "outsiders" following us, this would have to do!
"Why do we have to stay and watch?" Yu Yu said unhappily, and Xue Er frowned as well, looking at me as if she felt the same way.
Then Xianxian spoke up, "The more people there are, the more trouble there is. Finding those two is enough; Fengfeng, Lime, and I will manage. You two should conserve your energy. We don't even know when we can get out!"
"Alright then, take care," Xue Er said lightly, her eyes showing a hint of reluctance but more complexity; I couldn't quite tell what she was thinking...
It was a strange feeling, odd enough to exude an eerie vibe from within.
So it was decided that Yu Yu, Xue Er, and Shen Ming would stay behind while Xianxian and I followed Lime away. We walked with Lime for a while in silence, both of us understanding without needing to speak. The walls around us were made of Black Sand Mud, completely devoid of weeds or any decorations; it was unnaturally clean without even a light slot or lantern.
"Alright, now it's just the three of us. Did you discover something? Why avoid those people?" Xianxian stopped and asked Lime.
We all halted; there wasn't a soul around us, yet an eerie atmosphere lingered. Somehow, I felt as if someone was watching us from the shadows—a feeling that was very unsettling.
"Come out," Lime suddenly said.
Xianxian and I were startled and looked around; within the range illuminated by the light, there was no one. Suddenly, I thought of Luo Yu and said, "Turn off the lights."
Without asking why, Xianxian directly turned off the lights. The surroundings plunged into darkness, and that eerie feeling intensified. Sure enough, after a few seconds, soft and faint light began to emerge from the darkness—light emanating from a human body. Seeing this made everything clear to me: "Luo Yu!"
"Luo Yu? Is that really Luo Yu?" Xianxian asked in surprise.
"I'm not sure, but that's how he appeared last time." As the words were spoken, the figure ahead fully revealed itself. Although his body was still somewhat transparent, there was no doubt that this person was Luo Yu! In other words, another Lime!
As soon as Luo Yu appeared, he coldly glanced at us before turning to Lime and asking with some irritation, "What do you mean by this?"
"They are trustworthy." Lime, however, seemed unfazed by Luo Yu's attitude. His voice, identical to Luo Yu's, brought me a sense of familiarity and reassurance.
"Trustworthy? You think they are trustworthy?" Luo Yu looked at Lime in disbelief, as if seeing a stranger.
Hearing their conversation, I felt something was off. Lime and Luo Yu were supposed to be the same person, but their perspectives seemed to have diverged because of us.
"We stand with Lime; why are we not trustworthy?" I asked Luo Yu. His meaning was clear: he didn't trust us and had even attempted to kill me.
Luo Yu coldly replied, "If you stand with him, why did you bring enemies in?"
"Enemies? Who are you talking about?" I looked at him in surprise. Enemies? Who is the enemy?
Luo Yu did not answer me but turned to Lime. "Why did you choose them? He has already seen the Flower of Life; not killing them will only be detrimental to our plan!"
"What plan?" Lime asked in confusion.
Luo Yu was taken aback and then looked at Lime with even more bewilderment. "You... you don't remember?"
"Remember what?" Lime frowned, his expression darkening.
Luo Yu closed his eyes and suddenly laughed, a bitter smile on his face. "I never expected... I truly never expected they would come this far..."
"What are you talking about? Can you be clearer?" Xianxian said with a puzzled expression, her lips twitching.
Luo Yu walked up to Lime. They had the same figure, the same brows and eyes, the same face; even their voices were identical. However, Luo Yu's tone was filled with unusual grief and anger. "Do you know that your memories have been tampered with?"
As Luo Yu's voice fell, all three of us were taken aback!
Lime's memory was destroyed?! Damn it, his memory was actually tampered with?! Damn it, damn it! Even Lime's memory was altered, and he didn't even know it?! Does that mean it would be even easier for us to...!!?
"What happened?" Lime looked at Luo Yu in shock, a hint of panic and pain flashing in his eyes.
Luo Yu did not answer Lime's question but calmly said, "Back then, I came here with Feng Zhengyu and a group of people just to find something."
"What is it? Is it the Box of Ten Thousand Bones you mentioned earlier?" I asked impatiently.
"Yes." Luo Yu nodded, then turned around and said as he walked, "Follow me."
The three of us silently followed Luo Yu. This time, although the ominous premonition grew stronger in my heart, I felt that Luo Yu would not harm us. Yet, the uneasy feeling lingered and refused to dissipate!
Time seemed to stand still; each step felt like walking on the edge of a knife. Luo Yu's figure appeared increasingly ethereal, elusive, and lonely, as if he might vanish at any moment.
I don't know how long we walked, but we finally arrived at the place Luo Yu mentioned. After he opened the door, darkness enveloped us. Luo Yu lit a Light Slot, revealing a small room where we could see everything at a glance. We were immediately stunned by the scene before us.
Inside the room was only one coffin, about a meter long. Above the coffin floated a black Black Box! The Black Box was only a quarter the length of the coffin and floated motionlessly. I could confirm that there were no wires or anything securing the Black Box!
"This?" Xianxian pointed at the floating Black Box and asked in confusion, "This can't be what you all referred to as the Box of Ten Thousand Bones, right?"
I thought the same; the Black Box was engraved with many intricate and detailed patterns that resembled skulls or something similar. In any case, it looked very eerie, especially since it was floating above a small coffin, making it even more unbelievable!
"This is the Heavenly Temple," Luo Yu said calmly, his expression unusually serious and solemn as he looked at the Box of Ten Thousand Bones.
"What’s inside?" I asked nervously. Although I didn't know where this tension came from, my heart was racing uncontrollably, accompanied by a strong urge to open it.
Luo Yu turned to me and said expressionlessly, "I don't know; it's locked."
"Can't open it?" I looked at him in disbelief, and he gazed back at me, calmly saying, "I heard Shen Ming say you are Feng Zhengyu's son?"
"Yes," I nodded, not understanding what they meant.
Xianxian suddenly spoke up, "Back then, he was the only one who made it out alive. What's so strange about having a son?" As she spoke, she circled around the coffin, her hands probing around the Black Box, seemingly checking for anything fixed.
"Is this coffin for a child?" Xianxian said with confusion. As soon as she finished speaking, my unsettling feeling grew even stranger.
"Let's go. I don't want to know anymore!" I turned away, a terrible and terrifying thought lingering in my mind, but I was unwilling to dwell on it!
Although I felt that my fleeting thought was absurd and bizarre, my intuition urged me not to think too deeply. Perhaps this was a form of self-protection and avoidance.
"Hey, are we leaving now?" Xianxian questioned as she grabbed my arm. "Fengfeng, don't overthink it. Don't you want to know the truth?"
I looked into Xianxian's eyes and then glanced at Lime and Luo Yu. I felt a deep inner struggle; at that moment, I was inexplicably afraid of knowing the truth!
Just then, I heard Luo Yu say to me, "What happened back then occurred right here."
