"Ha ha ha~" Xianxian suddenly laughed a few times and said to Major Ma, "So, have you had enough fun?"
Huh? I looked down at Major Ma and suddenly had a bad premonition.
"Hehe..." Major Ma chuckled lightly and said to Xianxian, "I've had enough, but unfortunately, we have to leave soon."
"You, you guys!?" I was speechless! I felt like I had been played...
"Alright, I'm heading back. There are still a bunch of things to handle at the police station." After saying that, he chatted with the village chief for a bit, said his goodbyes, and left.
Watching their backs, I couldn't help but ask, "Did you call them here?"
Xianxian chuckled and crossed his arms, saying, "Of course not. I was just as shocked to see them."
I nodded. It seemed the police were indeed doing their job; they probably sent someone over after the last attempt to persuade the villagers to leave failed. Fortunately, with Xianxian and us here, the issue with the Mountain Ghost was resolved perfectly. Without one side, it would have been difficult to solve this matter; it was mutually beneficial. With Major Ma's cover, we weren't too restrained in our actions.
I just didn't expect Xianxian's connections to be so extensive. I had sensed some relationship between him and Major Ma before, but it didn't seem like it at the time. So I didn't think much of it. Who would have thought this guy would team up with outsiders to trick me? It made me anxious for days; how embarrassing! I had even told him many lies in front of him, and now it seemed he had known all along!
"What exactly is your relationship with him?" Once back inside the house, I couldn't wait to question Xianxian. There were too many people outside earlier to talk freely; now that we had some time alone, I had to interrogate him properly since he had kept me in the dark!
Xianxian smiled mischievously, leaning on the table while pouring himself a cup of tea and sipping it. "Just friends, what do you think?"
"Just friends?" I shot him a disdainful glance. Did he really think I was that gullible after being fooled once?
"Alright." Xianxian shrugged and said, "I've known him for four or five years now. Is that enough?"
"You went in?" I asked curiously with a sideways glance.
"Pfft!" Xianxian spat dismissively and rolled his eyes at me. "This Lord has never been caught!"
Then he began to recount how he met and got to know Major Ma.
Five years ago, Xianxian was only 15 years old—full of youthful vigor and rebelliousness. At that time, he insisted on going down into the pits alone despite the organization's objections. Little did he know that right after he had just stolen from a tomb and was happily on his way back, he ran into a car accident.
The location for Tomb Raiding is naturally chosen in the Rugged Mountains and Wild Ridges, places that are sparsely populated. So when Xianxian saw police cars, he was taken aback. It was at that moment that he met Major Ma. The car accident was quite bizarre; many people died, and each of their faces was filled with terror. Although fear is normal during an accident, the survivors were in a daze, insisting that ghosts were at play.
The police department naturally did not believe in ghosts, so they dispatched more personnel to investigate the cause. Xianxian, having appeared in the Rugged Mountains and Wild Ridges, unfortunately became a suspect. At that time, Major Ma was still a junior officer. After several conversations and with Xianxian's cooperation, the two gradually became familiar with each other.
Afterward, the surviving passengers went mad one after another or even died, leaving both the hospital and the police department helpless!
The haunting incident caused widespread panic. Police are human too; they can arrest criminals, but once it involves ghosts, there are believers and skeptics alike, making it impossible to clarify such matters.
"Did the case ever get solved?" I asked.
Xianxian shook his head and glanced at me. "Do you think everyone is as twisted as you to see ghosts?"
"I don't know how it ended up; anyway, that's how I met him. Don't be fooled by Major Ma's seemingly gentle appearance." He sighed. "In fact, he has a strong sense of justice. Ever since he found out what I was doing, he has lectured me quite a bit. But we didn't cause any major destruction, right? Besides, I promised him that if I found any important artifacts or historical facts, I would unconditionally contribute them to the party and organization. That's how I got introduced to Dr. Zhang."
After listening for a while and digesting what he said, I couldn't help but ask, "Does the higher-ups know about Changsheng?"
"They naturally know; do you think archaeologists are just sitting around?" When it came to serious matters, Xianxian dropped his playful demeanor. "The higher-ups attach great importance to this matter; whether it's a blessing or a curse is uncertain. Ever since I got acquainted with those people, I've been exploited quite a bit." He chuckled at himself, his eyes narrowing in both helplessness and relief. "In any case, I'll inform them of any important clues I find. Assisting the police is something we common citizens should do, right?"
"Yes, yes," I agreed but then asked, "So who are you really working for?" It was getting more complicated with another party involved.
"I'm only working for myself!" Xianxian replied with a half-smile. "My body is with the organization while my heart is elsewhere. I'm staying with them just for intelligence purposes; as for the police department, it's merely an exchange between friends. But don't worry; right now I'm working for The League of Shadows!"
I smiled back. "Yes! Your choice is correct!" Deep down in my consciousness, assisting the police is appropriate. I don't mind sharing what we've discovered with them but only regarding historical facts or matters beneficial or harmful to the country. As for The Dead-related issues, I would never speak carelessly.
"Do you know why the higher-ups haven't arrested us?" Xianxian suddenly asked.
I looked at him, signaling him to continue.
Xianxian furrowed his brow for a moment before casually stating something shocking.
"Because the higher-ups discovered there are traitors among us!"
Traitors? No way! I stared at Xianxian in surprise but quickly calmed down; those mysterious organizations could lurk for a long time without backing from one or two powerful individuals.
"So we need to cooperate with the higher-ups to root out these traitors?" I asked.
Xianxian nodded, "Tomb Raiding is illegal, but even so, there are many who risk their lives for money. The police are powerless and cannot eradicate all Tomb Raiders. Moreover, some forces are too powerful; their existence has lasted even longer than the founding of the party! One must ask, with such a terrifying tumor hidden in the shadows, how could those above not want to eliminate it?"
"What are they really thinking?" I didn't immediately express my opinion, but I had already formed some thoughts in my mind.
A glimmer of insight flashed in Xianxian's eyes. "Those above say that this thing is a danger that must be eradicated!?"
"Do you believe that?" I asked.
After a moment's pause, Xianxian nodded heavily and said, "Eternal life sounds beautiful, but the cost is far greater. Those above are very clear about this. Moreover, after several inquiries, I am very certain that they do not want to obtain that power; rather, they want to destroy it!"
Want to destroy it? This was the first time I had heard someone express disinterest in immortality. So I asked, "Why? Isn't the allure of eternal life great? Don't they really want Immortality?"
"This is what I've been concerned about!" Xianxian set down her cup and stroked her chin thoughtfully. "Those above know much more than we do. As for the reason, it's classified as S-level secrecy; someone with Major Ma's small position naturally isn't qualified to know. However..."
"However, we will find out, won't we?" Xianxian smiled confidently.
"Yes!" Immortality itself goes against the laws of nature; the consequences of defying heaven's will are unimaginable.
Life and death are natural processes; one is born from the earth and returns to it after death. Living a full life is enough—why seek Immortality?
With all loved ones gone, being alone—wouldn't that be lonely?
