"With weak strength, one cannot accomplish great things, can they?"
I smiled nonchalantly, "There's nothing we can do; reality forces us to grow. I can't afford the consequences of not moving forward. Now, come with me."
Fu Song was taken aback, lowering his gaze and asking, "Where to?"
"To find Lime." I added, "There are a few others coming with me. If you notice anything, let me know. Also, you'd better not make any other moves; I'm only giving you one chance." Every member joining The League of Shadows needs to be carefully selected. I don't want any spies among us, so traitors must be driven away. In severe cases, they must be killed!
"I..." After taking a few steps, Fu Song stopped. "I saw him not long ago."
I nodded. The fog was no longer as thick as before, allowing visibility of one or two meters around us. As for Lime, I wasn't sure at first, but now hearing Fu Song's words, I was convinced that Lime must have come to investigate the rumors about Immortality!
I couldn't understand why Lime reacted so eagerly whenever he heard about immortality! The allure of eternal life is significant—indeed very significant—but I wasn't foolish enough to think that Lime desperately wanted Immortality. There must be some compelling reason behind his search for it. Coincidentally, our goal was also that so-called immortality; as long as we had a clue, we wouldn't easily give up.
"This fog is strange!" Suddenly, Fu Song blurted out.
I shook my head with a smile, "If it weren't strange, why would we be here?"
Fu Song fell silent.
After walking for a long time, the sky grew brighter. The long-lost sunlight poured in, and the fog gradually faded until it completely disappeared. The scene before us had changed; I stopped and looked at the gray sky, my eyes dimming further.
There were many trees here, yet they were lifeless—not like autumn leaves falling but rather a complete **! total **!
A faint stench permeated the air; whether on the trees or underfoot, everything was dark and damp—jet black—as if all the plants had lost their vitality and begun to rot...
Fu Song, who I had my eye on, remained silent upon seeing this scene. It was easy to imagine that if Xianxian and the others were here, they would definitely be shouting and making a fuss!
"What the hell? What is this situation?" Yes, it seemed to be Xianxian's voice?
"Master Xian, are you sure this isn't a graveyard for plants?" Hmm, is that Wang Yi's voice?
"Xian, you are being too rude! But this place is truly beautiful!" Hmm, that's the voice of Snow Princess. But dear, are you sure your taste is okay?
I mechanically turned around and indeed saw a group of five standing aside, chattering away.
"Brother Feng, hey, who is this?" Wang Yi and the others greeted me and then stared at the fierce figure beside me.
Xianxian shot me a sideways glance, half-smiling, "Can't tell? Just in this short time, you've picked up someone?"
"Pick up your sister!" Looking at the malicious intent in his eyes, why... why does it feel so annoying!
"I don't have a sister; I want little brothers. Look, a whole bunch!" Xianxian shamelessly laughed.
"You've had enough." I rolled my eyes at him and glanced at Li Hui, introducing, "This is Fu Song, my classmate. He'll temporarily join The League of Shadows!"
Speaking of serious matters, Xianxian couldn't help but put away his frivolous smile and stared at Fu Song for a moment with a scrutinizing gaze before calmly saying, "Let him join?"
After saying that, with a 'whoosh,' he drew out a dagger. The sharp blade seemed to be tinged with coldness; even I couldn't help but feel a shiver run down my spine. I watched as Xianxian circled around Fu Song and suddenly placed the dagger against his neck. His dark eyes were devoid of emotion; in that moment, he seemed like a hellish demon radiating intense hostility. "Are you sure you want to join?" His tone was flat but felt dangerous.
It was my first time seeing Xianxian intimidate someone. I must say, Master Xian is not just a title; he truly has the demeanor of someone in power. That imposing aura is something that can't easily be faked; it's forged from years of navigating life and death.
Seeing the cold sweat on Fu Song's face and the goosebumps rising on his neck, I timely rescued the terrified individual by lightly laughing, "Alright, don't scare him anymore. We'll see if he has what it takes later; worst case scenario, we just let him go."
Xianxian nodded, sheathing his dagger and returning to Snow Princess's side. I turned back and inadvertently caught a glimpse of Fu Song's mouth twitching suspiciously. But it didn't matter; seeing Xianxian and the others made me very happy. We each shared what had happened since we parted ways.
It turned out that after I was taken away by an unknown entity, to avoid greater losses, the remaining few huddled tightly together. When that giant white hand grabbed them, Xianxian guessed that I would let that thing take me away without resistance. So he simply instructed everyone not to fight back and let that thing carry them off. After an unknown amount of time passed until the mist thinned and the giant hand dissipated, they arrived at this place to regroup with me.
I recounted my side of the story to them as well, including meeting Fu Song. Of course, I didn't mention anything about coercion or temptation; what's the point in bringing that up? Ha!
"How do we proceed now?" Wang Yi asked.
"Towards the area with the strongest smell," the previously silent Glasses Man, Zhao Yang, replied.
Xianxian nodded in agreement, "Right."
As we spoke, our group continued deeper into the area.
Zhao Yang's suggestion to follow the smell was indeed correct; however, the odor was far from pleasant. It was abnormal for all the vegetation to be decaying like this, and the stench was quite overwhelming!
Fu Song quietly followed behind me. He didn't ask about Xianxian and the others' backgrounds, and I had no desire to explain either. However, Li Hui seemed much calmer now compared to before! I couldn't help but wonder if my previous intimidation tactics were too ineffective. Otherwise, why did Xianxian only need to show a little of her skills for him to appear more compliant?
Forget it; let it be.
For now, we had only one goal: the Mountain Ghost!
I could already faintly detect a scent, and I believed Xianxian sensed it too. I used to not believe in ghosts, but having encountered one and even communicated with it changed my perspective. Legends usually have some basis in reality and are rarely fabricated out of thin air, so the rumors of a Mountain Ghost existing in these mountains might very well be true!
Whether it was the unusual weather before or the current abnormal decay of vegetation, I believed there was a hidden force at play, and that force was likely the Mountain Ghost! It's possible that Lime had already come into contact with it; we needed to hurry! What does it mean to be brothers? It means sharing both fortune and misfortune! I sensed that the Mountain Ghost wouldn't be easy to deal with, so even Lime might be in danger!
