"What's wrong? Afraid we'll make you carry Faye again?" a sinister voice came through. I couldn't help but glance at Sun Lan, who was looking up at me with a proud expression.
"Why do I smell jealousy?" Tong Qi said with a mischievous grin.
Sun Lan immediately shot him a glare, pointing and shouting, "What did you say?!"
"I was just joking; you're overreacting, haha..." Tong Qi laughed shamelessly, his eyes glancing slyly at Li Hui, conveying an unspoken meaning.
Xiao Xiao tugged at Tong Qi's arm and scolded, "Tong Qi, what are you talking about? Sun Lan isn't that kind of person!" Despite her words, there was a playful glint in her eyes.
"Sun Lan..." Rophie looked awkward and hurried to speak. But I interrupted, noticing Sun Lan's displeased expression, and lightly said, "The provocation tactic isn't working anymore. I'm going to take a stroll in the back mountain later; what about you guys?" I then looked at the others, especially Rophie.
"I'm going up the mountain with Sun Lan!" Li Hui shot me a warning glance before trying to sweet-talk Sun Lan into conversation.
"I..." Rophie hesitated, wanting to say something but holding back. Seeing her like this clearly indicated she wanted to join me on my trip. I felt a surge of joy and was about to ask her to come along when unexpectedly, Xiao Xiao suddenly wrapped her arms around Rophie, grinning mischievously, "The three of us will go play in the back mountain with you; we've already explored the upper mountain anyway." Tong Qi readily agreed with Xiao Xiao's decision.
After lunch, we split into two groups: Sun Lan and Li Hui continued up the mountain while the four of us—myself and Rophie—went to explore the unmined areas of the back mountain. As for Lime and Fu Song, they were still nowhere to be seen.
As October passed, the weather had turned cooler. The forest in the back mountain seemed even colder than outside. Although leaves were falling, there were still evergreen trees here. The air was fresher, faintly carrying the unique fragrance of grass and wood. Closing my eyes and breathing deeply made me feel much more relaxed.
"Wow, I didn't expect the trees here to be so much thicker than outside. Hehe, this trip is worth it," Xiao Xiao said as she pulled along Tong Qi, both chatting and laughing joyfully.
Stepping on the dry branches and fallen leaves, accompanied by a beautiful girl, I felt great since I had rarely experienced such moments before. However, it seemed we couldn't find any topics to discuss, so Rophie and I simply strolled along, enjoying the calm warmth of the moment.
Sensing that Rophie was feeling a bit unstable, I tilted my head in confusion to look at her. Rophie looked back at me, hesitating to speak.
"What's wrong?" The beautiful girl seemed a bit unhappy.
"Feng Zi, you know about Li and Li Bao, right?" Rophie asked cautiously, her voice soft.
My smile instantly stiffened, but I quickly relaxed and replied, "I know everything." Throughout this journey, many of the others had been acting strangely. At the time, I thought I was overthinking it; perhaps they had wanted to tell me all along, especially since my relationship with Dabao was very good.
It is fate and destiny.
I had come to terms with what happened with Dabao; his wishes were fulfilled. As for the unpleasant things that occurred between us, let's just pretend they never happened. This friendship will not change.
"It's unfortunate that he can't play with us anymore, but I believe he will be taken care of on the other side."
Rophie nodded and took a few steps before suddenly stopping to ask me, "Do you believe in ghosts?"
Her eyes were beautiful, but at that moment they were tinged with a hint of melancholy and entanglement. "I do," I answered without hesitation. What difference would it make if I didn't believe? I had seen them before, more than once.
Rophie's body stiffened as she bit her lip, seemingly struggling to speak.
I knew exactly what she was thinking. "I used to not believe in ghosts either, but Vast World is so mysterious; many things cannot be explained by science. Whether we believe or not, the world will not change because of us."
"Have you seen one?" Rophie looked at me, fear evident in her eyes as if she recalled something.
I wanted to say no, but seeing her expression suggested she had encountered something as well. So I smiled calmly and said, "I have seen one, and what happened was quite unpleasant."
"You really have seen it!" Rophie was somewhat shocked, but also slightly relieved. When she saw me nodding, she deflated like a punctured balloon and began to speak slowly.
It turned out that there was a strange noise coming from downstairs at night, as if someone were arguing or a woman were crying, but during the day, there was no sound at all. She had once boldly peered through the peephole and saw nothing but red inside, unable to see anyone. Moreover, she had heard that the family on the fifth floor had not lived there for a long time...
After listening to her, I already understood and rubbed The Dead in my hands, feeling the chill emanating from it sharpen my mind.
"I'll accompany you back to take a look when we get down."
Rophie's eyes lit up. "Really? That's great! I haven't dared to go back for several days."
"Really." Seeing her delighted expression, I couldn't help but pat her hair. It was soft and smooth, quite pleasant to touch.
Rophie smiled shyly, and at that moment, Xiao Xiao suddenly ran over, panting and said, "Faye, Feng Zi, oh no, something big has happened! Down the mountain, down the mountain..."
I frowned, noticing that Tong Qi was not there. I comforted Xiao Xiao, "Catch your breath and speak slowly."
Xiao Xiao took deep breaths and began to speak in fragments: "The police... so many police have come... oh, they said something happened in the mountains and they won't let anyone in!"
"Tong Qi asked me to tell you that he has already gone back with Li Hui and the others."
"We should hurry back." Rophie said quickly.
I nodded, feeling an ominous premonition in my heart. Could it be that they discovered we had done something illegal and were coming to arrest us? But that shouldn't be possible; we had been very discreet about it and they wouldn't mobilize so heavily just to catch a few of us.
As I pondered this, we had already returned to Duxiu Villa. Sure enough, as Xiao Xiao had said, there were many police officers surrounding the entire villa. Not only that, but police could be seen both up and down the mountain.
"What happened?" I sighed in relief; the officer didn't recognize me and didn't seem like he was there to arrest anyone. He appeared to be on guard for something.
"I heard there was an incident in the mountains, and a group of special forces just went in," Fu Song said, having appeared beside me at some point.
"In the mountains?" I frowned, wondering if this was a coincidence or something deliberate.
Also, where did Lime run off to? Although I didn't think he would get into trouble, this place wasn't safe for long. Faced with so many officers, my instinct was to escape.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Cui Guide sitting nearby, his face pale and devoid of color, his eyes vacant and dazed.
"What's wrong with Cui Guide?" I glanced at him and asked Tong Qi beside me.
"Oh, him." Tong Qi also looked at Cui Guide thoughtfully. "I heard the incident happened in his village."
Upon hearing Tong Qi's words, Xiao Xiao rushed over to Cui Guide to ask what had happened. The rest of us quickly gathered around him. Although we had just met, Cui Guide was a decent person, and we all tried to comfort him.
"I... I don't really know..." Cui Guide's face remained pale, and there was a hint of panic in his eyes.
I frowned; he was lying!
However, if he didn't want to talk, that was fine. I stood by without saying anything. There are always some people and situations in this world that are unpredictable. I'm not Sage, so I can help when possible, but if I can't, then so be it. I wouldn't deliberately create trouble for myself or seek it out...
