Dim light scattered around, filtering in from the front, while the air was filled with a murky smell mixed with mold and a fishy odor. I was all too familiar with this scent, so familiar that I could identify it even with my eyes closed.
The soil felt drier, lacking the coldness and hardness of tiles; it had a soft yet firm texture that felt grounded.
As the light shifted, I suddenly noticed something white flash by me. Turning my head instinctively, I saw a small, pale object protruding from the soil. It was tiny and thin, and before I could analyze it further, my right hand had already reached out to grab it. With just a slight tug, the object snapped off...
Bringing it closer to my face, I felt a chill run down my spine. Damn it, this is a human finger!
In the dim light, I carefully observed the earthen walls around me. Although there were no obvious openings, the black-and-white specks made my scalp tingle more and more! Coupled with the faint moldy and fishy smell here, my suspicion was confirmed: the walls were filled with... human remains...
With this realization, the sounds around me became increasingly clear. I couldn't tell if those things were digging through the soil too quickly or if the soil transmitted sound exceptionally well; all I could feel was that the rustling noises grew louder and closer, as if at any moment, numerous small holes would appear in the earth around me, followed by heads emerging from them, surrounding us completely...
"Hey." Amidst the rustling sounds, a clear voice of confusion suddenly broke through. I looked up; that was Lime's voice, right?
"What did you find this time?" Xianxian asked leisurely from behind.
Lime paused, leaning against the earthen wall to listen intently.
Xianxian and I didn’t interrupt him; we let him listen for a while longer before he began to feel around again. Then he leaned against the wall, hesitating to speak: "This place..."
Lime rarely acted like this, so I immediately straightened up and asked, "What's wrong with this place?"
"This isn't an ordinary Tomb Hole!" Lime's tone remained steady but brought an unsettling calmness to those listening.
Before we could ask further questions, Lime continued: "If I'm not mistaken, this Tomb Hole just happens to avoid their watch."
"Are you saying they won't dig their way here? How is that possible?" Xianxian said, sounding somewhat doubtful.
I nodded; Lime wouldn't say anything without reason. But would they really not find their way here? The key question was why. This place connected to a cave inside the mountain. They were numerous, so it should just be a matter of time before they reached here... Could it be...
Because there are many skeletons here?!
I looked up at Lime in surprise, only to see him staring ahead, deep in thought.
Xianxian and I exchanged glances, both waiting for Lime to continue explaining. Lime did not disappoint us; after a moment of contemplation, he spoke: "Nothing is impossible because they have passed through here many times."
His words struck me like a thunderbolt. I was stunned for a moment, thinking that Lime's hearing and perception were incredibly sharp! Although I had almost believed this place would be "overrun" several times, aside from the sounds, there had been no movement. I thought they simply hadn't arrived yet. Hearing Lime say this made me wonder if we had already brushed past death multiple times.
"Perhaps we'll know the answer soon; the person who dug this hole is quite skilled!" Lime said calmly, as if stating a very ordinary fact.
I had long since grown accustomed to his unflappable demeanor. However, anyone praised by Lime must be extraordinary; I wondered if I would have the chance to meet them.
After climbing for nearly half an hour, I felt utterly drained, my mouth dry and my abdomen cramping painfully. Damn it, I really doubted whether I could survive until tomorrow... It felt like my life force was gradually fading away, and yet I was powerless to do anything about it.
At that moment, Lime stopped.
Were we going to rest again?
After climbing for so long, stopping repeatedly had left me dizzy from exhaustion and hunger. Without food or water, resting alone couldn't restore my strength; each break only left my body more numb...
This time was no exception. As soon as I collapsed down, it felt like all my strength had been drained away. Every movement tugged at my wounds, and it felt as heavy as a thousand pounds; the pain made it impossible to move, which was truly torturous.
My eyes were sore and painful; keeping them open felt like being pricked by needles.
Just a few seconds after lying down, I could already hear the sound of snoring coming from behind me. It wasn't the kind of loud snoring that shook the walls; it had a very rhythmic quality. He had been dozing off frequently these days, but he didn't snore every time—only when he was extremely tired. So, as I listened, I gradually drifted off to sleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but I suddenly felt someone pushing me. At first, I didn't want to pay attention, but then I became conscious of where I was and jolted awake. I noticed Xianxian was also awake. I yawned; after such a deep sleep, my whole body felt weak and limp, and I didn't want to move at all. Living was truly exhausting... But no matter how tired I was, I had to keep going!
"Sleep consumes energy; you can't sleep too long," Lime said.
"How long have we been sleeping?" As soon as I spoke, I realized my voice sounded very deep and hoarse; it was so unpleasant that I could barely recognize it as my own.
"Half an hour," Lime replied before turning away. His voice came clearly from the front: "There's no way forward." Although his words were quite despairing, hearing his voice somehow brought a strange sense of calm—quite contradictory.
"What? No way forward?" Xianxian crawled over my legs and peeked around Lime's side. Suddenly, he gasped and fell silent.
Seeing this, my curiosity was instantly piqued. To be honest, we had stopped for so long that I hadn't even checked our surroundings! So, after some effort, I managed to get up on my knees, placing my hands on their shoulders as I looked around. A wave of tingling sensation shot from my feet to the top of my head!
What did I see!?
There really was no way forward! However, there was a person—or rather, a corpse—leaning against something in front of us! A tattered figure, already reduced to bones, sat ahead with long black hair cascading down on both sides, sparse enough that the white bones were visible beneath.
Looking at the clothes of this skeleton was almost unbearable; they were in tatters and darkened with decay, emitting a strong stench. However, perhaps due to my nose being accustomed to such stimuli during this time, my sense of smell wasn't reacting very strongly at that moment.
As I stared at it, a crucial question suddenly struck me!
