In a dark and distant corner, a one-meter-high Bronze Door stood closed, with faint cries resembling a half-liquid wail, melting into the air, its contours blurred, leaving only a thin layer, like the skin of a corpse. Were those fragmented cries coming from beyond the door?
The sounds of something breaking through the earth grew louder behind us, footsteps echoing, the ground rumbling, the walls trembling, as if they would collapse at any moment and fall into the Abyss, ultimately accompanying death.
The cries ahead drew closer, sharp! Melodious! Desolate! It seemed to bow its neck and whisper in my ear, Whispers of the Dead, penetrating through the skin and settling deep within my heart, stirring up a pool of clear water stained with indelible blood!
Running to the door, we were already panting heavily. Light hit the Bronze Door, and suddenly we saw a fierce and menacing giant dragon! The dragon had nine claws, sharp and powerful, exuding an overwhelming arrogance! The most striking feature was its pair of bulging dragon eyes, cold yet fierce, radiating bloodlust. Just one glance gave an overwhelming sense of pressure; after a few seconds of staring, I felt dizzy as if it could devour one's soul.
I quickly looked away and glanced back. Xianxian was facing away from me, light piercing forward; in that limited light, the rubble on the ground trembled up and down. The roaring sound echoed for ages until finally, a shadow broke through the darkness and charged towards us against the light. Immediately after, another shadow burst into view. Despite being mentally prepared, I was still startled by what was chasing behind us.
Dirt-stained rags clung to its skin, barely hanging on. A massive head was matted with black damp hair; its features were twisted and deformed. Its hands had turned into claws with long black nails that looked incredibly sharp. Strangely enough, its body was elongated and boneless as if it had melted, dripping with thick black liquid that filled the air with a nauseating stench! They ran fast; in almost no time at all, they would be upon us.
I hurriedly drew out my daggers, one in each hand, ready for an intense battle ahead. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Xianxian also grasping a sharp Black Blade taken from the Crystal Coffin. We stood side by side, blocking this path firmly to give Lime enough time to Open the Door.
In an instant, that long-haired Corpse had reached me. I raised my wrist and took a few steps forward; the sharp Black Blade curved through the air and pierced into the Corpse's abdomen with a 'thud.' As if sinking into a swamp, when I pulled it out, a pool of Black Water splashed onto my hand—wet and sticky. At the same time, a foul stench assaulted my senses. I even forgot to hold my breath; stabbing three times in quick succession, that Corpse suddenly grabbed my hand. A wave of cold washed over me as I saw it still standing upright. With my left hand, I swung to sever its arm; then with my right hand extended straight out for a slash followed by a kick—two birds with one stone—the corpse crashed into another one rushing from behind. At that moment, Xianxian executed a flying kick, bending at her waist to dodge an attack from another Corpse while those two fallen Corpses rolled into the Abyss...
There was no time for joy because there were too many Corpses! One after another they came like Primordial Beasts, unstoppable!
"When can we open it?" I shouted as I kicked another Corpse away. My fists alone couldn't fend off so many hands—let alone facing countless rushing Corpses!
"I can't open it; we can only blow it up!" Lime shouted as he charged to our front line and immediately joined the fray. But instead of feeling any relief, I felt increasingly caught off guard; unexpectedly, several claw marks appeared on my body—burning pain!
Lime had already pulled out a grenade. The three of us were retreating while fending off the long-haired Corpse. I was drenched in sweat, thinking that if this continued, we would either be torn apart or crushed in no time!
When we were less than ten meters away from the Bronze Door, Lime suddenly threw the grenade forward. Three seconds later, it landed in the Corpse Pile five meters in front of the Bronze Door. I crouched against the wall, covering my ears. Then, a massive Big Bang echoed through the air, nearly shattering my eardrums, tearing through the darkness with despair. Debris flew everywhere, hitting me painfully! The ground shook violently, and the black soil beneath my feet shattered in an instant, leaving terrifying cracks that were deeply unsettling!
Once the tremors subsided, I quickly opened my eyes to see scattered debris of various sizes and black Corpses lying haphazardly. Those still alive were having their throats slit one by one by Lime, each cut precise and ruthless, without any embellishment—clean and efficient.
In the dim light, I hurriedly glanced toward the dark corner. The Bronze Door remained intact; only the path in front had collapsed into a large pit. At the break point beneath the Bronze Door, there was a pile of corpses stacked waist-high. Their bodies were soft and boneless, with long black hair that looked wet and matted as if soaked in mud, mingling with Black Water, making it hard to distinguish between hair and body. The air was thick with the scent of death, chilling to the bone!
On the other side of the explosion, I could hear stones rolling, footsteps hitting the ground, and low hoarse growls. Along with that, faint sobbing sounds from a woman beyond the Bronze Door were still clearly audible. When Xianxian pointed the flashlight across, I couldn't help but frown tightly and stare ahead. Sure enough, despite the massive explosion creating a large pit that blocked their path, they continued to charge forward recklessly, one after another, like a revolving lantern jumping into the pit...
It was easy to imagine that at this speed, within minutes, the pit would be filled with corpses again, and new bridges would be reconnected! At that point, a new round of slaughter would be imminent; it was impossible to predict how it would end! Therefore, our only way out now was through that Bronze Door. Although there were eerie sobs coming from inside that sounded exceptionally unsettling, I believed deep down that it couldn't be more dangerous than our current situation. So we could take a desperate gamble! As for retreating behind us, there was no time to think about finding another exit!
"Should we blow up again?" Xianxian asked.
Lime frowned in thought but neither agreed nor disagreed. Instead, he quickly walked to the front of the Bronze Door, using his one-meter-long black sword to push aside the clumped Corpses, then kicked one into the abyss. The corpses fell apart like lotus roots—disconnected limbs hanging together—looking extremely disgusting. It was clear that Lime wanted to clear away the bodies piled up in front of the Bronze Door.
Seeing this, Xianxian and I quickly moved to the door and suppressed our urge to vomit as we kicked at the corpses. The moment my foot made contact, I felt as if I had sunk into a swamp; my shoes instantly became covered in thick and foul-smelling Black Water. Initially, I questioned why Lime wanted to clear away the bodies until I saw a small black hole beside them. Joy surged within me as I quickly pushed aside more corpses; that black hole grew larger with my gaze! Once all the bodies were cleared away, an uneven opening about twenty-five centimeters high appeared before us—roughly half a meter tall.
During this process of clearing away bodies, I actually forgot about the woman's sobbing from inside until I heard it again. A shiver ran through me; this ghostly woman wouldn't be easy to deal with! Just thinking about that thousand-year-old female corpse that had relentlessly pursued me made my scalp tingle. However, in order to escape this haunted place, we had no choice but to proceed.
The three of us exchanged glances; then Lime took the lead and bent down to crawl inside while holding a flashlight in his mouth and gripping his sword with one hand—carefully and cautiously making his way inside.
As it seemed like the Black Pit was about to be filled up again, Xianxian urged me to hurry inside while he held back.
I also knew that time was tight, so I gritted my teeth and quickly crawled into the cave. It was pitch black inside. Speaking of which, doesn't Lime have a flashlight? Just as I was puzzled and trying to get up, someone covered my mouth with their hand, and I heard a "shh" in my ear...
