As we continued down the path, many of the stone slabs had already broken. We nearly fell several times due to the collapsing slabs, and that was still mild. Now, in front of us, there were hardly any stone slabs left! It was pitch black, and there was no way forward...
I reached out to touch the surface, and fortunately, the thread was still intact. It seemed that due to the passage of time, the Black Crystal had completely decayed and shattered. However, I was puzzled as to why the previous section of the path was fine while this part had almost entirely collapsed.
"Be careful!" As soon as Lime's warning fell from his lips, I felt something suddenly rush towards us at high speed. A strong gust of wind swept past me, and instinctively, I crouched down. At that moment, a black, furry object zipped closely over my scalp! I could almost distinctly feel the intense wind and its cold, rough texture. Almost simultaneously, Lime and Xianxian were also attacked in the same manner. Of course, Xianxian had it worse; he had been caught off guard and fell flat onto the stone slab since he hadn't managed to lower himself in time. Naturally, being higher up made him more vulnerable.
Fortunately, I had mentally prepared myself before entering, so when the sudden attack came mid-air, I wasn't caught off guard. Instead, I felt a slight sense of relief because it was often unsettling to walk through without incident! After all, we were entering the Death Gate!
A dangerous aura filled the entire space. I cautiously drew my dagger while Lime held a flashlight in one hand and had already drawn his sword in a defensive stance with the other. Xianxian pulled out a finely crafted handgun.
Looking around, I strongly sensed that whatever had just attacked us was still nearby!
I focused my mind and felt the subtle fluctuations in the surrounding air. Sure enough, a few seconds later, that thing attacked again from above right. Its speed was too fast; I sidestepped just in time but didn't manage to strike before it whooshed past my neck and vanished into the darkness. I didn't fully see its form, but in a brief flash of light, I caught sight of what attacked Xianxian—it was an ugly black tentacle resembling Withered Vine. The tip of the tentacle looked sharp enough to pierce through anything it touched. In an instant, a thought flashed through my mind... that thing seemed somewhat familiar!
Since only Lime was holding a flashlight among us three, after it zipped past me, I lost sight of its appearance. My heart raced with increasing vigilance; at that moment, I truly felt that thing looked familiar! However, there seemed to be something different about it—this feeling was hard to articulate.
Moreover, I couldn't afford to ponder slowly now because I sensed strong movements all around! The dangerous aura intensified; every cell in my body felt tense as if each second dragged on like an eternity. Suddenly, Xianxian cursed loudly and fired several shots at his wound. I nearly spat out blood in shock; just as I wanted to turn back and scold him for being reckless and not keeping calm, that thing attacked again! And this time it wasn't just one or two; there seemed to be seven or eight tentacles coming at us simultaneously!
Could it be that it was testing us before? This thought flashed through my mind as I clumsily dodged while trying to stabilize myself. Xianxian was alone on his side and outnumbered; in his panic, he jumped over to where Lime and I were standing. The stone slab swayed more violently now and felt increasingly cramped—perhaps because Xianxian joined us—I sensed even more of those things attacking us! Fortunately, we three stood back-to-back; for a short time we could handle those things without much issue. However, if this dragged on too long and our stamina waned, we would surely become their targets!
I finally understood why there were no stone slabs ahead—had they all been knocked down by these creatures? The slab beneath us still held some integrity; this meant that ahead lay the real danger while we were merely facing minor threats here?
When that thing attacked again, I didn't move but stared intently. I knew Lime was there, and that thing couldn't harm us. This was also a reliance on Consciousness, of course; my trust stemmed from the fact that he had never let me down. This time was no different; the thing was cut in half by Lime, and the severed limbs quickly fell into the abyss before my eyes. I didn't blink once from start to finish, and only after it completely disappeared did I ask, " Xianxian, don't you think that thing looks familiar?"
"Familiar with what?" Xianxian asked, puzzled, after firing a few shots.
"Just..." As I began to speak, I suddenly remembered that Xianxian wasn't present at the time, so he probably wouldn't recognize it. This time, I didn't stand by idly; I swung my Long Dagger and joined in cutting the vines while keeping a vigilant eye on my surroundings. I said to Xianxian, "Do you remember the Snake Vine Tree I mentioned before? Although it's not exactly the same, I feel like they are quite similar."
Xianxian fell silent for a moment, perhaps thinking, then suddenly exclaimed, "Oh! The one you mentioned! These two places aren't too far apart; maybe what you said is indeed possible!"
Hearing Xianxian say this made me feel even more convinced! However, I also grew increasingly worried because that Snake Vine had been relentless, growing back after being cut! Moreover, the situation back then was better; there was light, more people, and weapons. But now we were standing on a stone slab that could collapse at any moment, with no real escape routes around us and an unfathomable abyss below! The only light came from the flashlight in Lime's hand; there were just the three of us, and as for weapons, we each had one. The ugly Withered Vine attacking us might just be that endless menace! With such strength and disparity, unless a miracle occurred, we definitely wouldn't make it through!
As I saw more and more Withered Vines attacking us, I felt myself nearly exhausted and blurted out, "Should we turn off the flashlight?"
"Are you crazy? In such a critical moment, how can we be without light?" Xianxian immediately rejected my suggestion.
"But with the light on, we're just sitting ducks!" I argued.
"Then..." Xianxian started to say something but couldn't finish. I knew that in this situation, whether there was light or not made no difference; the attack had already begun and wouldn't simply end!
Bang...
A Black Vine slammed heavily onto the stone slab. I felt a tremor beneath my feet as the slab tilted over forty-five degrees. I almost slipped off but managed to grab the edge of the slab. However, due to this sudden change, when I crouched down, I noticed that cracks on the slab had become increasingly numerous and alarming! I knew this place wouldn't hold out much longer...
