I originally thought that the massive black object above was impressive enough, but I never expected that beneath this less than half a meter of Black Crystal lay an astonishing scene!
I cannot describe the feelings in my heart at this moment. Below the dark abyss, where the flashlight beam shone, was an endless expanse of Suspended Stone Slabs! They resembled neither stairs nor bridges, with pieces of Black Slate floating steadily below, cascading down at about a thirty-degree angle. The Black Crystal slab we stood on was just the first one; the next Black Crystal slab was less than half a meter beneath us, and apart from the bare stone slab, there was nothing else.
Speaking of which, even the staircase had a layer standing upright. There were no handrails or safety measures at all. To leave, we had to step carefully onto the ancient stone slabs one by one, and we had no idea where they led or if any would collapse along the way!
"Can we really get out of here?" I swallowed hard. Everything about this suspended structure felt unsafe! It was extremely unreliable; without sufficient light, it would be easy to miss a step and fall into the abyss! If it weren't for Lime holding the Wolf Eye Flashlight at that moment, I would have thought this was all an illusion. But even with the flashlight, we couldn't see the bottom; all we could see were the sprawling suspended black stone slabs. To be honest, it was quite spectacular—very spectacular! But how were these Black Crystals floating? Could they withstand our weight?
Lime answered my question with action. He shone the flashlight and unhesitatingly stepped onto the next stone slab, followed by his other foot. Seeing that the slab did not sink under Lime's weight gave me courage to lift one foot. The moment my foot touched the slab, I heard a hollow sound. When my other foot followed, I clearly felt the slab trembling beneath me!
We staggered forward on the stone slabs, adjusting our steps slowly with each movement because the sudden added weight caused the slabs to shake violently, making it difficult for us to maintain our balance. The perilous suspended stones made me break out in a cold sweat; beneath us lay an unfathomable abyss that roared silently like a beast ready to devour us. With every step, I took deep breaths to steady myself, fearing that if I lost focus for even a moment, the slab would drop down—though I knew deep down that it was unlikely.
Perhaps sensing my tension, Lime turned around and calmly said to me, "Don't worry; there are chains."
Before I could ask further, Xianxian shouted from behind, "There really are chains!"
I turned back to see Xianxian squatting at the edge of a stone slab, fiddling with something in the darkness. To me, where he was touching seemed completely dark and empty. Doubtfully, I reached out to feel as well and touched something cold and wire-like; perhaps it didn’t reflect light and thus blended completely into the darkness. Below us lay another abyss, making it impossible to see in this pitch-black Underworld unless you came into contact with it.
So that's how it is...
A weight lifted from my heart as I realized why such a fine Black Crystal slab floated in mid-air. Moreover, they extended downward neatly like stairs because each slab's edge was connected by a thin wire-like chain. So when you stepped on them, they would sway but not easily collapse. However, after two thousand years without collapsing—was that really normal? Was it?
In front of us was the fifth stone slab. As Lime stepped onto it, a faint cracking sound emerged, sounding extremely dangerous. However, there was no other choice; this was the only path available to us, and we had no way back. I steeled myself and stepped down, followed cautiously by Xianxian.
With Lime in front and Xianxian behind, our footsteps needed to be synchronized, especially maintaining our balance. If the suspended ladder began to sway violently in mid-air, it was likely that all three of us would fall into the abyss, which would be a light punishment compared to what could happen!
I kept my head down, walking step by step. Although the stone slab beneath my feet wasn't severely decayed, the mottled cracks were alarming, making it feel as if it would shatter with just one step.
"Ah!" Just as I thought about whether it would break, the section I stepped on suddenly collapsed! I leaned forward and fell! In that critical moment, I quickly reached out to the sides and fortunately grabbed onto two invisible wires. The ladder shook violently; I felt cold sweat on both my chest and back. If I hadn't caught hold...
"Fengfeng!" Xianxian called out worriedly from behind. I hurriedly replied, "I'm fine; you two hold on tight!"
While speaking, I saw that Lime and Xianxian had already crouched on the stone slab, gripping it tightly with both hands. Although they weren't as flustered as I was, they didn't look comfortable either. Right in front of me, I could see the veins on Lime's hands bulging; it seemed quite difficult for him to stabilize himself, especially since the slabs were swaying significantly left and right. I dared not move at all for fear of making things worse.
"I think I'm dragging you down again..." I said with a bitter smile.
Lime couldn't speak because he had a flashlight in his mouth. Xianxian's laughter came from behind; although I couldn't see his face, I heard him teasingly say, "I think I've gotten used to it... so you don't need to worry too much."
"You say that too..." I shook my head helplessly. At that moment, the suspended ladder gradually stabilized. Lime quickly stood up; still holding the flashlight in his mouth, he bent down without hesitation and grabbed my arms with both hands. With a strong pull, he lifted me up. Since I had just caused the stone slab beneath me to collapse, Xianxian needed to be careful with his strength and distance when coming down. However, it seemed this wasn't an issue for him... We three stood steadily on one stone slab.
"Due to its age, there should still be some broken ones below. But don't worry, Fengfeng; this Lord will protect you!" Xianxian patted his chest confidently without a hint of nervousness.
I felt happy inside but shot him a glare and teased back, "By the time you come to save me, who knows how many times I'll have fallen! Forget it; I'll just rely on myself!"
Xianxian immediately became displeased upon hearing this and muttered unhappily beside me, "If you don't want me to save you, then Fengfeng, you should lose some weight when you go back. Look at you; one step and you collapsed this stone slab!"
I was left speechless by what he said and could only glare at him, reminding, "Be careful when you go down. After all, your legs are short; don't step on it and fall!"
"You... you are being unreasonable! It was someone who stepped on the stone slab and caused it to collapse! How dare you say that This Lord has short legs? Besides, This Lord seems to be taller than someone, and of course, my legs are longer too!"
