"Wait... wait a minute, after all that you said, your brother is dead, right? So he won't..." Wang Yi's eyes widened as he suspiciously glanced around, his mouth agape but unable to finish his sentence.
I looked at them; aside from Xianxian, everyone else displayed varying degrees of tension and fear. I couldn't help but nod and softly pointed at Dabao, who was squatting on the ground, saying, "He's right there..."
As soon as I spoke, gasps filled the air. Indeed, this matter couldn't be hidden for long. I had initially thought of resolving it quietly, but I didn't expect it to be exposed so quickly. With a helpless sigh, an eerie silence enveloped us; I thought that if a needle dropped, we would all hear it. But was it good or bad to speak up now?
Although there is strength in numbers, sometimes it only leads to more casualties! Now, Xianxian was already my brother; I had pulled him into this mess. Now even his brothers were going to be dragged in. I suddenly felt a pang of guilt as my previously calm university life transformed into this moment of life-and-death choices. I realized I still hadn't fully adapted.
"So... where is he taking us?" After a long pause, the nearsighted one asked with some hesitation.
"That's what I want to know too. However..." Looking at the anxious and confused expressions of the crowd, I couldn't help but frown and continued, "I think there are others here or... Dabao said that person has been talking to him." Although I didn't explicitly say that the person might be a ghost, I believed everyone could read between the lines.
"How do you know he's not lying!?" Wang Yi suddenly became agitated, glaring at me and demanding, "He’s indirectly your fault too; how do you know he doesn't hate you? What if he's trying to find a way to get you killed? What about other ghosts? Isn't it just him calling the shots? How do you know he's not deceiving you into bringing us along for his burial!"
"Wang Yi!" Xianxian suddenly scolded him. Before he could continue, I calmly said, "I believe Dabao! This matter has nothing to do with you; you have your freedom. So I've decided we should part ways here. I've enjoyed spending time with you these days; let's leave it at that. If there's a chance to meet again, then so be it."
"Mad Zi..." Dabao had already lifted his head; his face was streaked with tears, and his jet-black eyes were filled with deep regret and guilt. Meeting such pure yet sorrowful eyes hit my heart hard. Unconsciously, I took two steps forward and reached out my hand, which Dabao grasped tightly. I pulled him up and said softly, "Let's go." Afterward, I met Xianxian's complex gaze and simply offered him an apologetic smile before turning away and leading Dabao out. It wasn't until the light behind us completely vanished that I let out a heavy sigh.
"Feng Zi, I..."
The hand holding Dabao's was very cold—extremely cold—as icy chills continuously seeped from his palm into my body. Yet I didn't let go; although it was freezing, it made my mind clearer. Seeing Dabao standing still, I turned back and met his face filled with conflict and pain. I couldn't help but smile and said, "It's okay. Didn't you say that person is in pain? Can you find him? Perhaps we can help."
Dabao's hand trembled slightly as he looked at me in disbelief, murmuring, "Do you really believe in me?"
"What kind of friendship do we have? We've been close friends since childhood! If you don't believe me, then what am I?" Even if it wasn't my fault that he died, how could I just stand by while something happened to my brother? I couldn't do that!
Dabao bit his lip tightly, tears welling up in his eyes again. He nodded seriously and said, "Yes, we are good brothers!"
I didn't know if there were any traps in the passage, but after walking for so long with Dabao without incident, I felt reassured. The flashlight flickered, indicating it was running low on battery. We had finished the food long ago when we were trapped, and the supplies given by Pei Zi were with Xianxian; I hadn't taken anything with me. So now my bag was empty of food and water, leaving only a few low-grade Firestarters and some cold fireworks. I didn't want to waste them unless it was absolutely necessary.
As we walked, my stomach occasionally growled, and my mouth felt dry and uncomfortable. The flashlight had long been turned off, but fortunately, Dabao's "body" was different; it emitted a faint glow in complete darkness. I followed him step by step, able to exchange a few words at first, but now I was just following instinctively in a daze.
"Fengfeng, do you really believe in him?" That voice in my head had asked more than once.
"I've made myself very clear; I believe in him. How many times do you need to ask?" My blood felt cold all over as I tightened my clothes around me and replied angrily in my mind.
"Don't get annoyed; you'd better understand that I'm another version of you. If you didn't have this thought, I wouldn't be asking..."
"Shut up! I don't want to hear it!" How could Dabao possibly harm me? We had been together from elementary school to university for over a decade. How could such a bond change so easily? To put it bluntly, even raising a dog creates feelings; how much more so for a living person who has been my brother for so many years!
Although I didn't want to hear that madman's words, I couldn't stop him. He just laughed sarcastically and snorted coldly, "He died because of you. You'd better understand the situation. If you want to die like this without knowing why or how, that's your choice!"
"Or do you not want to find your dad? Don't you want to know who caused your family's downfall? Who killed your Uncle and Second Uncle's family, along with your kind grandmother? It's really pitiful; you clearly escaped once, yet suddenly she dies from illness. Do you really believe she died from excessive sorrow? Hahaha! Your life is truly a tragedy! This family is unfortunate to have you; in the end, everyone dies without clarity or someone to collect their bodies and seek revenge!" Each merciless word stirred up anger within me, reopening old wounds and pouring salt into them. My heart felt exceptionally painful.
"Mad Zi, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Dabao suddenly placed his hand on my shoulder. A chilling sensation pierced through me. I shook off the heaviness in my mind and forced a smile, saying, "I'm fine; just a bit hungry."
"It's all my fault." Dabao showed a hint of apology, then suddenly grinned and said, "Mad Zi, just hang in there for a bit longer. We'll be there soon, and then I'll go find you some food, okay?"
"Okay." I weakly nodded, feeling as if my legs were weighed down by heavy sandbags. I was both hungry and thirsty, and my body was exhausted, but I continued to follow him.
"I know everything you're saying." After walking for a while, I sighed and thought to myself, "I won't give up my life so easily. Until I find my dad and fully understand the truth, I absolutely will not die!"
"If Dabao truly resents me, once everything is over, I would unhesitatingly sacrifice this life to atone for my mistakes. But right now, with him like this, I will never abandon him. I believe that every problem has a solution..."
After saying this, there was a long silence before I finally heard a barely audible sigh...
