Thanks to Xianxian's high alertness, we managed to escape in time. Among the ten or so people in our group, there were injuries but no fatalities. I didn't have time to check the situation behind me; out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Dabao had already turned a corner, half of his body slipping out of my sight. Without thinking much, I hurried after him.
Dabao was moving slowly. He seemed completely oblivious to the trap that had just appeared. His arms hung limply at his sides, revealing two pale, withered hands as he continued to "walk" forward. The beam of the flashlight only illuminated a narrow path; it wasn't a wide beam. Even with my eyesight, in this dim corridor, I could barely see a little further ahead. Looking at his silhouette against the backdrop of pure darkness ahead, I felt for a moment that it was like hell, and he was walking towards it!
A sudden wave of panic washed over me, and I rushed to grab him. However, each time I reached out, my hands passed right through him. I felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. I sprinted in front of him, and the light fell on his face. Dabao seemed not to see me at all and walked straight through my body!
A chill ran through me, penetrating to my bones! Suddenly shivering, I ran back in front of Dabao. As I stepped back, I anxiously called out, “Dabao, Dabao, please stop! Let’s talk this over!”
“Dabao, didn’t you say you wanted to get rid of that feeling of being alone? Look at yourself now! Tell me what happened to you! I won’t let things get worse! Right now, I can’t even reach you! Do you really want to disappear completely? Please stop! Do you remember Lime? Let’s go find him together!” By the end, I was nearly in tears. Dabao’s expression remained unchanged; he didn’t even blink, just stared blankly ahead.
What was ahead? Preparing myself mentally, I suddenly turned around and saw nothing but darkness; everything was invisible as if a void were sucking away all the light. Looking back, I couldn’t see Xianxian or anyone else; looking forward brought uncertainty. It felt like I was trapped in an endless black hole; apart from Dabao, I could see nothing.
The walls were covered with dark green moss. After walking a short distance, sparse weeds appeared at the corners of the walls and gradually became denser. The grave bricks had turned into ordinary stones but were neatly arranged together. A faint ancient atmosphere filled the air—a heavy sense of oppression. Occasionally, one or two weeds seemed stained with something; their colors deepened without the freshness of grass, only a rotten and unpleasant smell lingered.
“Dabao!” It seemed like Dabao had completely ignored me. What should I do? My mind raced as I forced myself to recall every detail since encountering Dabao and everything he had said—damn it, Dabao hadn’t said anything at all! What was I supposed to think?
Just as my head spun with anxiety and I wanted to appeal to his emotions and reason with him, Dabao suddenly stopped. My heart skipped a beat; just when I thought he was coming back to himself, I saw him frowning with vacant eyes. Although he looked at me, it felt like he was seeing something far beyond me. At that moment, Dabao moved his lips slightly and then blankly said, “He’s calling me.” Then he raised one arm and pointed at his head with his index finger, murmuring, “Here... I keep hearing him call me.”
“Who’s calling you?” It was good that he could speak; it seemed we could finally communicate! That’s what I thought when suddenly Dabao crouched down while clutching his head and hoarsely said, “I don’t know... I don’t know...” His body began to tremble as his voice grew more hoarse and low: “He’s in so much pain... so much pain...”
“Fengfeng, there you are! Are you okay?” Xianxian suddenly rushed out from the darkness and asked while sizing me up.
I shook my head. Soon, the others had run over as well. I glanced at Dabao with concern and then said to Xianxian, "I think his mind might have been confused."
"By whom?" Xianxian frowned. Although a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, he did not doubt what I said. I felt pleased by his trust, but thinking about Dabao made me anxious and frustrated; it was utterly perplexing!
"I don't know." I looked apologetically at Xianxian. If it weren't for me, Xianxian wouldn't have been dragged into this bewildering situation. Now that we had entered this complex maze, although we had received some food from Pei Zi, it wouldn't last long. Perhaps...
"You... who are you talking about?" At some point, Wang Yi had stood beside me, looking at me and Xianxian with a puzzled and uneasy expression. Eyeballs cautiously circled around me before asking nervously, "Whose mind has been confused? Are there others here?"
"What do you mean by confused?" Doctor Gao also approached, looking at us with confusion.
"I've felt your behavior has been a bit strange since earlier, Feng Zi. Are you hiding something from us?" Glasses Man adjusted his glasses, the light reflecting off the frames was bright and solemn. Meeting his dark gaze made me feel as if I were being seen through.
After Glasses Man spoke, Doctor Gao coldly added, "We are willing to follow Xianxian into danger because we all know the targets and purposes each time. But now, Xianxian, I really don't understand what we are doing. Isn't our goal the main tomb chamber?"
"The path to the main tomb chamber is not that one..." Before Xianxian could finish speaking, I waved my hand to signal him to stop. While I was familiar with Xianxian, the others did not know me for long. Although my time with Xianxian was also brief, that kind of understanding and feeling wasn't something I shared with everyone else. So I understood their skepticism; they didn't believe I was right because I had indeed kept things from them.
"My brother is in trouble." I said calmly. Wang Yi and the others quietly looked at me, waiting for me to continue. Watching Dabao still clutching his head in pain and murmuring made my heart ache. I slowly said, "I have a good friend back home named Dabao. Two years ago, I moved to Sichuan, and when I returned recently, I learned that shortly after I left two years ago, he thought there was a disturbance at my house and went in only to see someone he shouldn't have seen and was killed to silence him..."
"It’s all my fault. Although I still don’t know who the murderer is, one day I will find out! When that time comes, I'll make them all apologize to Dabao!" Apologize in hell!
"So your main purpose for coming this time is to help your friend?" Wang Yi looked at me incredulously.
"Yes." I nodded and said, "Originally, I thought Lime could help me with Dabao, but now I can't find him for the moment. Although I didn't want to trouble you all, it seems I've dragged you into this after all..."
"Wait... wait a minute, after all that you've said, your brother is dead, right? So he won't..." Wang Yi's eyes widened as he suspiciously glanced around, his mouth agape but unable to continue.
I looked at them; aside from Xianxian, the expressions of the others showed varying degrees of tension and fear. I couldn't help but nod slightly and whispered while pointing my index finger at Dabao, who was crouching on the ground, "He's just squatting there..."
