With a loud "bang," the entire Stairway shook, and the booming sound of the Big Bang echoed through the space, causing me to tightly cover my ears. After exchanging a glance with Xianxian, we quickly ran down the stairs; after all, whether we went up or down, it was all a cycle.
After the massive noise subsided, the vibrations grew weaker, but the dull echo still lingered in my ears. Just as we turned a corner, we collided head-on with Wang Yi and others who were rushing up.
"What happened?" I asked hurriedly. The noise was significant, and it seemed like the explosion must have been intense. Surely even this hard black stone could have been blasted open.
"Damn it, it's collapsed! Everything's collapsed! This is so bizarre; I only set off that little bit of explosives, and the destructive power is just too astonishing!" Wang Yi looked visibly shaken, clearly not expecting such an outcome.
"Collapsed? So does that mean we're still trapped?" I felt a bit disappointed; however, as long as we were unharmed, I believed there would be a way out... right?
"Let's get out of here first," Xianxian said with a frown, not commenting on the failure of the explosion.
We nodded and headed up the stairs. Although it was all the same wherever we went, we didn't want to stay among the corpses, so we could only move to a higher level where there were fewer bodies.
"Hey." Xianxian, who was at the front, suddenly stopped. I almost bumped into him as I didn't react in time. Steadying myself, I asked what he had found.
Xianxian turned to the side, one hand on his chin and the other pointing at a nearby corpse. He pondered aloud, "This face looks somewhat familiar. Have we seen it somewhere?"
I looked over in confusion and froze when I recognized that familiar face. In disbelief, I exclaimed, "Song A? How could Song A be here? He..." He was dead! Although Song A might have been someone watching me, he had been like a brother for so long; I couldn't help but feel sad about his death.
Because this space could suppress the decay of corpses to some extent, Song A's face was still clearly recognizable. His complexion was pale, and there were many bloodstains on his body; it seemed he had suffered severe injuries and bled to death while trapped...
"Song A?" Xianxian blinked and asked, "Is he one of the people who appeared with you last time in Heizhugou?"
"Mm." I have to praise Xianxian for his excellent memory; he must have only encountered Song A once, yet he could remember his face. If it were me, I would need to meet someone several times before I could remember them... Of course, perhaps it was because I didn't care back then that I couldn't remember.
"You don't want to take him with you, do you?" Seeing that I stood still, Xianxian might have thought my compassion was overflowing and asked me in surprise. I shook my head and forced a smile. "Let's go." We were in the Impossible Staircase, and we didn't even know if we could get out. What could I do by bringing him along? Besides, being "buried" in this vast Underworld was better than dying in a desolate wilderness.
Once we reached an area with fewer corpses, we sat down on the steps to rest while eating the Compressed Biscuit that Xianxian had given me. The compressed beef was already gone, and now this biscuit was just a backup. They had said before that it could last at most three or four days. As for water, we could only last another day...
The atmosphere was heavy; I could almost smell the despair. The tunnel couldn't be opened, and any explosion would cause a collapse. How were we supposed to get out?
Another day passed, and our water supply had completely run out. We had explored many times during this period, but each time we reached a collapsed area, we had to turn back. Every time I passed by Song A's corpse, my heart sank a little more.
"It’s already been three days; we can't really die here, can we?" One person said with despair on their face.
"We've tried every method; why can't we find any flaws?" Wang Yi said irritably.
"Could it be that we're really in Four-Dimensional Space?" The nearsighted person adjusted his glasses and asked faintly.
Upon hearing this, everyone began to chatter nervously, and even I felt a slight wavering in my heart. But I told myself that it was impossible. During these three days, I had often tried to convince myself that this place was a Four-Dimensional Space, yet after walking back and forth many times, I found no characteristics of a Four-Dimensional Space. Aside from its similarity to the Penrose Staircase, I couldn't pass through walls or see all sides of an object. Therefore, the hypothesis of Four-Dimensional Space was indeed fanciful...
At that moment, Doctor Gao calmly said, "Although I'm a medical professional, according to scientific theory, this is clearly not four-dimensional but rather a definite three-dimensional space."
"No! This must be Four-Dimensional Space! Otherwise, there's absolutely no way for us to get out; this is definitely four-dimensional, isn't it?" Some people were nearing a breakdown.
"Doctor Gao is right; this is indeed not." Xianxian suddenly spoke up, delivering a merciless blow.
"Yes." Although I was the one who brought it up initially, I had to say, "Even though this kind of thing can only be realized in a space beyond three dimensions, even today's technology can't achieve it. The person who built this Underworld must have died thousands of years ago. How did he manage to create it? The space we are in now is indeed a contradictory space, but the method was devised by humans. I refuse to believe that people thousands of years from now will be played around by someone who has been dead for a millennium."
"Yes, if you don't want to die, don't say anything negative until the last second," Xianxian said as she stood up and brushed off the dust from her clothes, seemingly wanting to check things out again.
"I'll go with you." Seeing this, I also stood up. I didn't want to face rows of corpses alone, nor did I want to sit aside and let my thoughts run wild. Right now, I needed to do something to distract myself because I really didn't want to wait for death!
Xianxian and I walked one after the other in silence. As we passed by the corpses, I hurriedly glanced at them. Perhaps when I can calmly face various corpses or become numb to them, that will be when I truly become strong. But by then, will I still be myself...
"Just as I thought," Xianxian said with a tone of resignation, as if she had already anticipated this situation.
I looked at the collapsed stones in front of me, feeling a mix of emotions. Each exploration only deepened our despair time and again...
"Let's go back." Xianxian turned around and walked past me, saying lightly.
I stood there motionless, staring at the scattered stones on the ground. Suddenly, I felt a strange sensation—a subtle feeling akin to a Sixth Sense. I couldn't help but ask in my mind, "Did you discover something?"
No one answered; it was quiet all around. This was my first attempt to communicate with another person who might exist within me. However, after a long time without hearing any response, I wondered if Dissociative Identity Disorder was just my imagination.
After a while, Xianxian urged me several times, but I ignored her, fixated on the chaotic scene ahead. That strange feeling in my mind persisted; I sensed that this clue was crucial and that I needed to think it through.
"Have you finally decided to accept me? It wasn't easy, huh? Hehehe." Suddenly, that frivolous and arrogant laughter echoed in my head...
