The surrounding cries grew fainter, yet Divine Hand remained largely unresponsive. The bright flames flickered on his black goggles, and suddenly, a thought struck me, sending a chill down my spine. I looked at Divine Hand and asked, "Did you already think of this method?"
Seeing Divine Hand silent, I felt a surge of anger and questioned, "If that's the case, why did you let White Two stay behind alone?" If he had planned this all along, perhaps White Two wouldn't have been left as cannon fodder...
"It was his own decision; no one forced him," Divine Hand replied calmly, showing no hint of remorse in his tone. Looking at the others, although a flicker of sympathy crossed their eyes, it quickly vanished.
"You're insane; I think you all are the real lunatics!" I couldn't help but shout. Did human lives mean so little to them? Especially that of a companion who had come along?
"Heh heh..." Divine Hand chuckled a few times and asked me, "Do you really think igniting the fire was a good idea?"
I was about to agree when I caught sight of the smirk on his lips, rendering me speechless. It felt like a thunderbolt struck me; I stood frozen in place. The intense glow still danced in Divine Hand's dark glasses, but this was... the forest...
With a bitter smile, I realized why Divine Hand chose to ignite the fire here; the trees had become quite sparse. Even if we burned a circle, it would be hard for the flames to spread widely or even burn ourselves. Remembering my earlier outburst, I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment. At that moment, Evil Bird plopped down on the ground and mockingly said, "When did you get so close to White Two?"
Hmph! I shot him a glare and remained silent as I sat down on the ground, deciding to be mute for now. That was indeed too embarrassing! Moreover...
"Alright, enough small talk," Divine Hand said while loading bullets.
Seeing them suddenly turn serious made me feel alert as well. In the tranquil forest, aside from the crackling of burning branches and leaves, there seemed to be many strange sounds mixed in. I listened intently for a moment before suddenly realizing what those sounds were. Before I could express my surprise, I saw Divine Hand and the others rushing toward the area where the flames were smaller.
Just as I was about to curse them for their lack of humanity for not informing anyone before leaving, I noticed the ground shifting slightly. Then many heads emerged from the dirt, glinting with cold light; those blood-red eyes sparkled with intense malice! Just one glance sent chills down my spine; I still remembered how that person had died! I believed that if they bit me even once, I'd surely see bones! These thoughts flashed through my mind in an instant as I dashed out of the fire circle, following Divine Hand and the others as we ran for our lives.
"Not good, there's one ahead too!" I don't know who shouted, but everyone ran back. I stopped to take a look; there were threats both in front and behind. Clearly, it was unwise to start a fire here, but staying put meant waiting for death.
In that moment of contemplation, several screams echoed around me. I forced myself to calm down despite the cold sweat trickling down my back. To be honest, I still held onto a sliver of hope that I could find a way out. Just then, an ugly Rat Zongzi charged at me, and instinctively, I kicked out. Coincidentally, the Rat Zongzi let out a scream and was accurately sent flying by my kick!
There was no time for joy; relying on my instincts, I ran toward the area with less red light. The further I went, the stronger the eerie feeling in my heart became, until I couldn't help but stop. At that moment, the footsteps behind me also ceased. Someone patted my shoulder, and I heard Evil Bird's teasing voice in my ear: "I didn't expect you to have some skill; you actually found a way out!"
Suppressing my surprise, I swatted his claw away and said dismissively, "What's so great about this?" Although I said that, deep down I felt incredibly lucky; despite the strange atmosphere around me, there wasn't a single Rat Zongzi here!
From another perspective, it meant that even the Rat Zongzi dared not tread here...
A chill breeze swept by, making me shiver involuntarily. Then someone exclaimed in surprise: "Divine Hand, there's a dead rat here."
It wasn't an exaggeration to call it a dead rat since this Rat Zongzi had been cut in half! It was bloody, with entrails and intestines... gruesome and truly horrific; even just looking at it hurt my eyes! Fortunately, after witnessing various gruesome sights these past few days, otherwise my old self would have run off to vomit.
"Good knife skills!" Even Kong Guayan couldn't help but praise.
"Who do you think did this?" The crowd exchanged glances; honestly, there was no need to guess. Whether it was cut by a knife or a sword, there was only one person we could think of.
Lime...
"How many people are left?" Divine Hand asked after taking a glance.
"Eleven people," Evil Bird replied.
When I saw them, there should have been about twenty people, but now only eleven remained... I counted again, and indeed, apart from me, there were only eleven left. Divine Hand nodded and said to Kong Guayan, "Go see where he went."
Kong Guayan nodded and began searching for clues with a flashlight, while the others rested in place and replenished their food, likely to avoid disturbing any clues. I don't know how long it had been, but just as I finished my Compressed Biscuit and was about to fall asleep, Kong Guayan approached Divine Hand and said something. Divine Hand then led his subordinates in a certain direction. Although my eyelids felt heavy, I could only drag my exhausted body along with them.
After about twenty minutes, a towering mountain appeared before us. Though shrouded in darkness, it could not hide its imposing presence that stood tall and unreachable!
The moment I saw the mountain, I sighed heavily. It seemed that after many dangers, I had finally emerged from the path... or was this mountain already part of the path? Regardless, I felt that I had taken a significant step closer to my goal. Of course, I did not allow myself to relax because I sensed that what would happen next would be even more dangerous; it would definitely not be easier.
Divine Hand and the others did not continue forward but chose to rest in place. Since I was not one of them and my presence as a night watchman was not crucial, I went to sleep early. I knew that although the mountain looked close, it would actually take several hours to reach. Right now, the most important thing was to conserve energy so that I wouldn't collapse as soon as we entered the mountain.
