Dabao seemed very pleased with his prank. After teasing them for a while, he floated over to me with a smug expression and raised an eyebrow, asking, "How's that?"
I didn't respond, just nodded lightly and raised an eyebrow back at him.
At that moment, Evil Bird suddenly looked at me with both of his Eyeballs. I thought he had noticed my small movement and was about to act nonchalant when he suddenly pointed in terror behind me. I assumed he was trying to scare me, but to my surprise, he pulled out a gun and fired a few shots at me. The bullets whizzed past my ears before I could react, and then I heard Evil Bird curse under his breath and shout, "Divine Hand, those ghostly things are out again!"
Again? I blinked. Now that I think about it, they did fire their guns yesterday too. Could it be that something truly terrifying had happened? Instinctively, I turned to look behind me. Just one glance left me frozen; at some point, strange Wronged Spirits had appeared around us!
This time there were even more than I encountered last night. Each one was either missing limbs or grotesquely deformed, wearing what seemed to be the clothes they died in, now tattered and Jet Black. Unlike last night, the ones appearing tonight were not ethereal ghosts but Zombies!
Undead but uncorrupted are Zombies, while decayed bodies are Corpses. Those who die and begin to rot become Zombies.
These beings had come alive just like us once, but for some unknown reason, they had transformed into these shell-like Zombies, often referred to as living Zongzi by Tomb Raiders. Perhaps their deep resentment caused them to wander like mindless corpses at night, seeking to harm the next intruder in the forest.
The sounds of gunfire echoed around me alongside the unique calls of birds and insects in the dark forest. I had no gun in my bag, so I retreated to the middle of the Divine Hand group. However, perhaps due to the larger number of people this time, I felt less fear. Watching them crawl or stagger towards us in their bizarre and stiff postures, their twisted faces crawling with Corpse Cockroaches, and their darkened Eyeballs glinting with malicious hatred made me unsure whether to feel sympathy or disgust. A wave of indescribable emotion surged within me.
"Crazy! Mad Zi, where did these ghostly things suddenly come from?" Dabao grabbed my arm and asked in fear.
Since Dabao probably hadn't seen these rotting Zombies, even though he was scared, he couldn't help but crane his neck to take a look. Honestly, I was somewhat relieved that Dabao was in ghost form rather than as a Zombie. Otherwise, encountering a face like that suddenly… even if I were mentally prepared, it would likely scare me half to death.
"Mad Zi, are you okay?" Dabao waved his hand in front of my eyes with a puzzled expression.
"It's nothing." I shook my head at him and suddenly thought of a good idea, so I excitedly said, "Dabao, why don't you try to see if you can understand what they're saying? It would be great if you could find out anything about Lime or the ancient tomb!"
After I finished speaking, Dabao looked at me with disdain and said irritably, "I told you, Mad Zi, do you really think I'm omnipotent?" He pointed at the approaching Zombies and continued, "They have no souls in their bodies at all. What thoughts could they possibly have? How am I supposed to communicate with them? How?"
I frowned. Although I knew the truth, I still asked hopefully, "You really can't hear their inner thoughts?"
"Can't—hear—anything!" Dabao said clearly, word by word.
I sighed deeply. Just as I was about to lament my unfortunate fate, someone suddenly kicked me from behind with great force. I stumbled forward several steps before managing to steady myself. When I turned around to curse, I saw Evil Bird's massive figure lunging at me. He grabbed my collar and said fiercely, "I knew you were up to no good! What were you mumbling about all by yourself? Who were you talking to?"
I didn't expect Evil Bird to be so perceptive; he noticed my behavior even in such a tense situation. Indeed, one shouldn't judge a person by their appearance!
Seeing that Dabao was about to pounce on him for revenge, I quickly gave him a discreet signal and then shouted at Evil Bird, "What’s it to you if I like talking to myself? Instead of worrying about me, why don’t you go help out instead of coming here to pick a fight? Are you afraid of these Zombies and deliberately trying to provoke me?"
"Bah! I'll deal with you later!" Perhaps infuriated by my words, Evil Bird spat heavily and angrily released my collar before running off to deal with the Zongzi ahead.
"Mad Zi..." After Evil Bird left, Dabao walked up to me with an apologetic expression.
"It's nothing." I smiled at him and said, "It's not safe here; you should come inside first. It would be bad if we got separated."
"Okay." Dabao nodded and didn't say anything more. I opened the wooden stopper and carefully closed it after he disappeared inside, putting it into the pocket of my clothes.
Gunfire continued to ring out, but the Zombies seemed completely unaffected. Bullets embedded themselves in their bodies and oozed black liquid, filling the air with a foul stench. If it were an ordinary person, they would probably be terrified by such a scene. However, Divine Hand was not an ordinary person; instead of showing any signs of panic, he calmly issued orders to his subordinates while directing them to pack up and retreat, all the while shooting at the heads of those Zombies.
No wonder this person wears a pair of large Sniper Goggles even at night. At first, I thought he was just trying to show off or was hiding something, but it turns out he is this professional. His shooting skills are so precise that he can take down a target with almost every shot. I guess that's how he earned the nickname "Sharpshooter."
Before long, they broke through a gap, and everyone quickly ran up the slope. I didn't want to fall behind and stayed towards the back of the group. Even if a Zombie lunged at me, it wouldn't be able to hurt me. After running for a while, I was panting heavily, and when I looked back, the Zombies weren't pursuing us. I figured that even if they did come after us, it would take them some time since their movements were quite slow.
Just as I found a spot to sit down and recover my strength, I suddenly heard someone exclaim in terror, "Boss, look!"
I instinctively looked in the direction the person was pointing. The surroundings were still filled with tall and thick Forest Wild Trees. At first, I could marvel at the wonders of nature, but after walking around and seeing nothing but these trees, I began to experience visual fatigue and no longer found them remarkable.
However, at that moment, there was something out of place. On the branch of the tree that the person pointed to hung a piece of black cloth. Seeing that relatively new black strip made me feel an ominous premonition. Sure enough, the next second, an Evil Bird squawked in surprise, "Isn't this our mark?!"
