The night was heavy, like dark, icy blood oozing from a rotting corpse, winding its way across the sky and the earth. The moon hovered lonely above the forest, its light dim, resembling the resentful tears at the corners of a woman's eyes. The tall trees were blurred by darkness, appearing from a distance like faces distorted by flesh. A light rain had just fallen during the day, and in the night, everything was damp; the skin of the trees and soil seemed to rot, and the air was filled with a suffocating odor.
The campfire suddenly extinguished, which was already unusual, especially in this dark and desolate solitary mountain.
"Damn it, it can't really be that sinister!" Wuma You swallowed hard, his legs starting to tremble. I saw him hurriedly reach into his clothes, not knowing what he was trying to pull out.
"Shut your crow's mouth, you little skinny brat!" I heard Sudai had been a soldier before, so she wasn't like Wu Xiaoshou at this moment; instead, she quickly drew her concealed dagger.
Seeing the three of them standing alertly, I remained seated, resting my chin on my hand and calmly said, "Look at you all getting so nervous; it's just a fire going out." I didn't believe in ghosts in this world, so when faced with such a situation, I first thought about the light rain earlier that day. The firewood and air were already damp, and with the surrounding plants undergoing aerobic respiration, releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide, it was understandable for the fire to go out.
"What do you mean?" Sudai asked me.
"The firewood and air are already damp..." I shared my thoughts. Sudai merely nodded and then asked, "Who brought the flashlight?"
"They're all in the tent," Song A gradually relaxed as he answered while pulling out a lighter. He said, "This isn't a graveyard; maybe it really is just an accident like Feng Zi said!" He then flicked the lighter.
With a "puff," the lighter ignited normally. Wuma You visibly sighed in relief and said, "See? I told you it wouldn't be that sinister..." However, before he could finish his sentence, a slight cool breeze blew again; the flame flickered twice before extinguishing once more.
"Twice! It went out twice! Could it really be ghosts blowing out the lights? Looks like we've really encountered something unclean this time!" Wu Xiaoshou's expression turned fearful, resembling a frightened puppy with its fur standing on end.
"What ghost blowing lights?" I shot him a glance and stood up casually saying, "I'll go get the flashlight."
Entering the tent, I randomly grabbed a flashlight from my bag. When I came out, I deliberately shone it on their faces one by one. The sudden bright light hit their faces, causing them to instinctively squint and shield their eyes with their hands. I couldn't help but laugh; modern technology was indeed more reliable. What ghost blowing lights? Bah! Those so-called ghosts or spirits were nothing more than biological energy similar to electromagnetic waves or mere illusions conjured by people's imaginations.
"See, I told you it’s nothing..." I didn’t want to admit that just as I said this, the flashlight flickered and then completely died. I was taken aback and angrily threw it to the ground, cursing, "Who bought this piece of junk? The quality is so poor!"
As soon as I finished speaking, a chill ran through my ears as a cold wind blew past me. I shivered involuntarily. In my confusion, Wu Xiaoshou came over and tugged at my sleeve, staring into my eyes and urgently saying, "Brother, isn’t your dad a big deal in this field? It’s time for you to step up; hurry up and get rid of those unclean things!" His expression was tense, and even his voice trembled slightly; he looked genuinely scared.
But the truth was, I really didn’t know how! Although my dad was skilled in this line of work, he had never taught me anything about it. So I could only helplessly reply, "I’ve told you I don’t understand these things. Otherwise, why would we waste money hiring an Earth Master?"
I knew my dad didn’t teach me these things because he wanted me to live a normal life without worries or fears, and not to be constantly entangled with Death Qi. After all, the dangers of this profession were unpredictable. Moreover, digging up someone’s ancestral grave was inherently disgraceful, which is why my dad had never taken me into the field. Besides, he had retired from this line of work over twenty years ago!
Furthermore, I had never been interested in this profession at all; I was solely focused on studying Sage Books. If it weren’t for my dad getting arrested and my grandmother suddenly passing away for no reason, I would probably still be in college like an idiot, completely unaware of what was happening until now when my family fell apart and I realized how foolish I had been!
"You don’t understand!?" Upon hearing my response, Wu Xiaoshou nearly choked on his drink. He suppressed the urge to curse and patiently looked at me before asking anxiously again, "Then Brother, what do you actually know? Hurry up and use your skills!"
"Can’t you understand human language?" I almost shouted. I had already said it twice; how did this guy’s brain work? My shout finally confirmed to Wu Xiaoshou that I wasn’t lying, so he stopped pestering me. Honestly, I was too lazy to deal with this fraud. Neither Song Asa nor I understood any of this knowledge; now that this scrawny guy was unreliable too, I really didn’t know what strange things would happen next.
However, good things don’t come easily while bad things come in pairs. Almost the next second, chaotic and unsettling noises suddenly erupted around us. It was the cawing of crows!
I jumped in surprise and turned to look into the distance just as a flurry of wings flapping approached from nearby. The night was dark; the crows were even darker. Under the thin moonlight, countless black shadows circled above our heads while screeching. The "caw-caw" sounds were harsh and hoarse, chilling to the bone!
Soon after, a large flock of crows flapped their wings and disappeared into the moonlight, vanishing into the darkness while leaving behind scattered black feathers that fell like raindrops.
I sniffed the air; whether it was psychological or not, after the crows flew away, there seemed to be an added foul smell of decay in the air that instantly reminded me of corpses—crows often feed on corpses...
Shaking off the feeling of disgust in my heart, I pointed to the lower left and said, "Those crows flew out from over there!"
"Where?" Song A looked in the direction I pointed, but it seemed like he couldn't see anything. Wu Xiaoshou also looked confused and whispered nervously, "It's all dark ahead, not even a Shadow of a Ghost can be seen. Where's the cave?"
"Xiao Zi, did you make a mistake?" Sudai asked me uncertainly.
I shook my head and continued to point ahead. Although I had misjudged things a bit earlier, I knew that I was different from other children since I was little. In the dark, as long as there was a little light, my vision could see farther and clearer than others. So I believed what I saw was definitely not wrong. I also knew they weren't lying; what they saw ahead was indeed darkness, but there was certainly an inconspicuous cave!
Suddenly—
A faint sound broke the silence; someone had rekindled the fire behind me, and flames flickered to life. At this moment, Song A still stared in the direction I pointed without turning around and said, "Wu Xiaoshou, go get the flashlight."
There was no response from behind. Song A urged again, but Wu Xiaoshou remained silent. I could sense that Song A was becoming a bit displeased and thought to myself that he wouldn’t suddenly freeze up at such a critical moment. I turned to remind him, but to my surprise, there was no one behind me! Looking over toward the tent, there were clearly no figures or strange sounds; in this night, Wu Xiaoshou and Sudai had suddenly vanished!
"Song A, they..." I turned back in confusion and unease, only to find—nothing but emptiness!
In just that moment of turning back and forth, all three of them had completely disappeared! I almost began to doubt whether I had developed some kind of special ability that made them vanish when I turned around. What the hell is this? Am I in a horror movie? Where did everyone go?!
In the darkness, coarse and hoarse "wah... wah..." calls occasionally drifted with the wind, sounding even more desolate and eerie in this Jet Black wilderness. It was annoying because crows are usually considered an ominous bird...
