Father-in-law and my wife exchanged a glance, their expressions somewhat grim. I knew what they were thinking. They were in cahoots, aiming to reclaim the money they had lent me before. I pretended not to notice and pulled Mother-in-law along as we continued to walk outside.
I glanced at the health check report in my hand, my brow furrowed. Mother-in-law was in excellent health, completely unlike someone with Terminal Cancer. Father-in-law and Mother-in-law stayed at my house, refusing to leave, claiming they wanted to accompany their pregnant daughter. I understood they were worried about me being exposed, so they were keeping watch here.
I feigned anger, loudly criticizing the hospital for misdiagnosing and insisting on taking Mother-in-law for another check-up. Father-in-law and Mother-in-law looked very displeased but dared not say much.
I asked a friend to help me investigate Mrs. Xue's classmates, but no suspicious leads were found. Perhaps the father of the child really was one of Mrs. Xue's classmates, but he was very well hidden, leaving no trace for me to discover.
I secretly installed surveillance cameras at home, hoping to find evidence of Mrs. Xue's infidelity by observing her interactions with Adopted Son. Through the cameras, I noticed that Mrs. Xue and Adopted Son were constantly on their phones, sometimes giggling at their screens as if they were a couple in love.
I trembled with rage, wishing I could tear them apart immediately. But I held back; without solid evidence, I couldn't act rashly.
I walked into Adopted Son's room and saw him engrossed in a chat, his expression tense. I knocked on the table and asked in a deep voice, "What are you doing?"
Adopted Son jumped in surprise and looked up at me nervously, "Dad... Dad..."
I glanced at his phone screen and casually asked, "Is dating getting in the way of your studies?"
Adopted Son lowered his head, looking very frightened. I patted his shoulder and smiled, saying, "It's okay; chatting is fine when you're tired from studying."
I picked up a necklace from his desk and asked, "Is this a gift for your girlfriend?"
Adopted Son took the necklace, nervously nodding.
I patted his shoulder and turned to leave the room.
Back in the bedroom, I closed the door and finally couldn't hold back my anger, slamming my fist against the wall.
In the following days, Mrs. Xue suffered from severe morning sickness. I woke up early and stayed up late to make her chicken soup and braised pig trotters, trying various ways to nourish her.
My actions earned me praise from neighbors and family alike; they all said I was a good husband.
While selecting Black-boned Chicken at the supermarket, I was spotted by residents in the community.
They all complimented me, saying I was truly a rare find as a good husband.
I smiled and accepted their praise, carrying the Black-boned Chicken back home.
As soon as I entered, I saw Mrs. Xue hunched over the toilet, vomiting continuously.
I immediately set down the Black-boned Chicken, rushed over, and gently patted her back, saying with concern, "Why are you throwing up again?"
Mrs. Xue wiped her mouth and looked at me with a pale face: "Maybe the baby is being a bit unruly."
I nodded: "Okay, you rest for a bit; I'll go get you a cup of hot water."
Mrs. Xue sat on the toilet lid and weakly waved her hand.
I squatted beside her, gently patting her back and comforting her: "Honey, you've worked hard."
Mrs. Xue shook her head and smiled: "It's worth it for our baby, no matter how tough it gets."
I smiled and nodded. As I casually looked up, I suddenly noticed the shining silver chain and butterfly pendant around her neck.
I was instantly frozen in place, shocked into silence.
Adopted Son hurried over, and upon seeing me, his expression turned extremely anxious.
