Handbook of Demonology
Chapter 1: Soul Bonds
Jia Xu first met Guo Jia in a dim alley. At that time, he had just become a new corporate slave, being exploited by his boss until late at night. As he walked on the road, Jia Xu thought, even if he were to be stabbed to death by a serial killer or a drunkard at this moment, it would be what he deserved. However, he did not encounter a serial killer; instead, he met a demon threatening humans with its large wings. Yes, a demon. Influenced by his college roommate's interest in the supernatural, Jia Xu's first reaction was that this thing actually existed.
Guo Jia also noticed Jia Xu, and his deep brown eyes spun around and merged into one, revealing a rather embarrassed smile to Jia Xu. Jia Xu calmly walked through the crime scene and continued on his way home. However, there were light footsteps following behind him. Jia Xu had no intention of turning around to look out of curiosity. He quickened his pace, and as he approached his doorstep, he realized that the footsteps behind him had disappeared. The owner of the footsteps was sitting on the steps of his house, swinging his legs idly.
When Jia Xu turned to look, the dark alley was empty, and the person in front of him did not have large wings or deep brown eyes. Instead, he looked like a visitor who had come late at night. Guo Jia's Mandarin was not very fluent, occasionally uttering words that Jia Xu couldn't understand. Whenever he heard this language, his brain felt like it was being hit by a hammer, causing a buzzing sensation and disorientation.
Guo Jia settled in inexplicably and unceremoniously. Occasionally, Jia Xu would ask, "Why are you following me?" Guo Jia would reply in broken Mandarin, "You have a pure soul." Then Jia Xu would disdainfully glance at Guo Jia and accuse him of lying. Guo Jia didn't get angry. He sat on the window seat, swinging his legs, and holding a parchment in his hand, saying, "The soul promissory note tells me that you have a pure soul, and it wants to have you."
The conversation ended as Jia Xu picked up his bag and left for work. Guo Jia curled up in the hanging chair, dozing off. The two lived together harmoniously, with Guo Jia occasionally tossing a gold coin to Jia Xu for this month's rent, and Jia Xu occasionally cooking for both of them. The unexpected event occurred at night, as Guo Jia broke in through the window and was struck by an arrow, causing a grotesque growth on his wound to squirm and burst through his body, piercing Jia Xu's abdomen.
Soft pink tentacles covered Jia Xu's eyes, and the dripping mucus made a sizzling sound as it hit the floor. It was the first time Jia Xu got involved in Guo Jia's affairs, asking him, "What is your true form?" This question, in the context of demons and humans, is akin to asking, "Can I see you without your clothes?" Guo Jia chuckled lightly and asked, "Are you sure?" Jia Xu tentatively pushed the tentacles in front of him aside and confirmed.
In an instant, the shadows on the ground seemed to come to life, with numerous tentacles of varying sizes emerging from the darkness. Guo Jia vanished, leaving behind a mass of tangible darkness enveloped in clusters of tentacles. Brown, heavy pupils flashed through the tentacles, blinking as if enticing Jia Xu to come closer. Guo Jia roamed around, the tentacles swirling around Jia Xu, saying, "My true form has no substance; everything you see is a mimicry."
Jia Xu responded slowly, "You are a mimic octopus." The tentacles suddenly disappeared, and Guo Jia sat in a pool of blood, saying irritably, "I am not an octopus." But after a while, he said, "But it is a very clever thing. It is a sacrifice because it is too clever to break through this dimension." Jia Xu stood in front of Guo Jia and said, "us belong to two dimensions." Guo Jia looked up at Jia Xu and nodded, saying, "Yes, but I will come to your side."
