I like Lu Ruijun.
I think he likes me too.
But I never expected that he would be interested in women other than me.
I found that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop them from spending time together.
In front of her, Lu Ruijun is gentle and cheerful.
He is no longer the silent, indifferent, and gloomy boy.
He has become so lively and vibrant.
I am almost driven mad with jealousy.
How I wish he could talk and laugh with me.
How I wish we could discuss poetry and literature together.
But I realize that my conversations with Lu Ruijun always remain superficial.
I asked him, "Brother Ruijun, which poem do you think is the best?"
He replied, "It's okay, I like them all."
I asked him, "Do you prefer Tang poetry or Song lyrics?"
He said, "It's okay, I like them all."
I asked again, "Do you think Li Bai is more wild or Du Fu?"
He answered, "It's okay, they're both quite wild."
My conversations with him never seem to progress.
But Jiang Yanzhou is different.
She can discuss poetry and literature with him; she can talk about life philosophy with him.
They always have endless topics to talk about.
And I can only stand by like a fool, watching them with wide eyes.
This sense of inferiority makes it hard for me to hold my head up in front of Jiang Yanzhou.
During the summer vacation of our sophomore year, Lu Ruijun's friend invited him to a famous mountain in a neighboring city to stargaze. I thought it would just be the two of us enjoying our time together. However, he stopped midway to pick up Jiang Yanzhou.
I was furious and questioned sharply, "Lu Ruijun, what do you mean by this?" Lu Ruijun frowned and replied, " Yuezhu, it's not safe for Yan Zhou to be home alone."
"Then you don't care about my well-being?" I cried out in anger. "Lu Ruijun, if you take her along, I will tell my dad that you are bullying me!"
Lu Ruijun's expression turned cold. " Yuezhu, you're using Uncle to pressure me again." He turned his face away and ignored me.
That night, we set up camp halfway up the mountain. Lu Ruijun's stomach problems flared up. I was anxious and wanted to take him down the mountain. But Jiang Yanzhou reacted faster than I did. She had Lu Ruijun lie on her back and carried him down the mountain.
Lu Ruijun was two years older than me and nearly six feet tall. The frail Jiang Yanzhou struggled as she walked with him on her back. I stood there watching them, feeling a mix of emotions inside. If I were a man, I would probably like a woman like her too.
I turned around and went down the mountain alone to find a pharmacy. By the time I returned with the medicine, Jiang Yanzhou had already safely brought Lu Ruijun down. She was by his bedside, holding his hand tightly.
I stood at the door, watching their intertwined hands as tears streamed down my face. Lu Ruijun woke up.
He glanced at Jiang Yanzhou, then looked at me.
He said, "Yan Zhou, thank you."
Jiang Yanzhou smiled, "You're welcome."
Their interaction made it seem as if I were the outsider.
Lu Ruijun and Jiang Yanzhou's relationship faced strong opposition from the elders of the Lu Family.
His mother clearly stated that she hoped Lu Ruijun would marry me.
As for Jiang Yanzhou, she did not think highly of her.
"Mom, please don't say that," Lu Ruijun said, sitting on the sofa with his head lowered.
"Yuezhu has grown up under my watch; I've always regarded her as a sister."
"Sister?" Mom Lu scoffed, "Why don't you ask her father if he agrees to let your sister marry someone else!"
Jiang Yanzhou's face turned pale as she silently packed her things and left the Lu Family.
I chased after her, saying, "I'll walk you out."
She shook her head, "No need."
