Cheng Qiuyi realized that her hair tie was missing only while taking a shower in the evening.
It wasn't anything valuable, but she was always meticulous about organizing her things; everything she used had to be returned to its original place. A hair tie like that couldn't have just sprouted legs and run away, could it?
After searching for a long time without finding it, she guessed that Liu Shuhan had accidentally taken it with her.
The hair tie had indeed been taken by Liu Shuhan, but it wasn't an accident; it was intentional. Liu Shuhan had a somewhat obsessive quirk of collecting things belonging to Cheng Qiuyi—specifically, things that belonged to her.
Liu Shuhan had liked Cheng Qiuyi since high school. Being timid, she didn't dare to confess openly, and the pain of unrequited love was heavy. One time, while picking up a test paper from the ground, she discovered it was Cheng Qiuyi's! Liu Shuhan secretly kept that test paper, and from then on, her collection spiraled out of control.
She had a locked drawer filled with small items that Cheng Qiuyi had used: broken pencils, a tiny piece of eraser, filled notebooks... Liu Shuhan especially cherished that notebook.
Most people's notebooks are messy, but Cheng Qiuyi's was not. Even her drafts were neat and clean. Occasionally, there would be a page without any formulas but instead contained one or two sentences written casually by Cheng Qiuyi. Each time Liu Shuhan read those short phrases—averaging fewer than ten words—her heart would swell with joy as if she were participating in Cheng Qiuyi's life. The thin pages had been flipped so many times that they were frayed.
Liu Shuhan knew this behavior was wrong, but she couldn't help herself. It felt as if possessing even a small item of Cheng Qiuyi's brought her closer to her.
Devoutly, Liu Shuhan brought the hair tie belonging to Cheng Qiuyi close to her lips and kissed it before placing it in her secret drawer.
"Qiu Yi, if only you liked me too," Liu Shuhan thought sadly as she rested her head on the table.
After finishing her shower, Cheng Qiuyi sat in a lounge chair in a daze, holding onto a jacket that Liu Shuhan had left behind.
Liu Shuhan had stayed at her place for over a week and loved this lounge chair the most. Whenever there was nothing to do, she would curl up in it like a little cat. Cheng Qiuyi couldn't help but want to pat her head every time.
The air was filled with Liu Shuhan's scent. Cheng Qiuyi greedily took a deep breath, feeling as if Liu Shuhan were still there, preparing dinner for her in the kitchen—her favorite dishes.
But reason told Cheng Qiuyi that she was gone; Liu Shuhan had left.
Cheng Qiuyi truly wished she could find a rope to tie Liu Shuhan down so that all she could see was herself and that her life would only contain her. That way, she could protect her well and prevent any more harm from coming to her.
When Cheng Qiuyi saw the injuries on Liu Shuhan that day, she wished all the pain could be transferred to herself instead so that Liu Shuhan could remain the lively and carefree girl she always was. God knows how long Cheng Qiuyi held back from killing that lewd driver.
Burying her face into the jacket belonging to another person, Cheng Qiuyi fantasized about embracing Liu Shuhan herself. The soft long hair cascaded down, enveloping her upper body completely; she felt an unprecedented fatigue wash over her.
“Shu Han, I love you,” Cheng Qiuyi said softly.
Thus, both of them, each with their own thoughts, suffered from insomnia.
Liu Shuhan hardly slept the night before and went to work the next morning with dark circles under her eyes. As soon as she entered the company, she was called into the manager's office for a scolding.
“Liu Shuhan, what's wrong with you? You've had someone cover your shifts for a whole week. Do you not want to work anymore?”
“Manager, I had a car accident a week ago and requested leave…” Liu Shuhan quietly replied, enduring the manager's anger.
“You think sending me a text counts as requesting leave? Just because you have that ridiculous title of 'beautiful Courier' and have been on TV a couple of times doesn’t mean you can act recklessly! Do you think the company can't function without you? If you don't want to work, just get lost!”
“When have I ever acted recklessly?” Liu Shuhan felt confused. She believed she had been diligent in her work; after half a year as a Courier, she had never received any complaints from customers. No matter how far it was, she always confirmed that customers received their packages. How did it turn into her needing to rely on her looks to stay in the company?
“You dare to argue! You…” The manager was still fuming and was about to continue his tirade when a phone call came in. He temporarily had no time for Liu Shuhan and focused on answering the call.
“Hello… Oh, Mr. Fang... You don’t need to worry about her… Rest assured! Regarding our contract for next year… Okay, okay, let’s wish for a pleasant cooperation!”
After hanging up, the manager's demeanor changed completely; he smiled and patted Liu Shuhan on the shoulder. “The young person is quite good, has potential. Work hard, and the company won’t treat you poorly.”
“…” Liu Shuhan left the manager's office helplessly. Who was this person with such influence that one phone call could change the manager's attitude so drastically?
After that, Liu Shuhan continued her work as usual, riding her slightly damaged electric scooter through the streets delivering Courier packages.
During this time, Cheng Qiuyi called her several times to invite her out for shopping, meals, or movies. However, it was peak online shopping season, and Liu Shuhan was extremely busy with no time to meet up. After declining a few times, Cheng Qiuyi seemed a bit unhappy and stopped calling her. When Liu Shuhan found time to call her back, she didn’t answer.
Feeling exhausted from work like a dog and being ignored by the person she liked made Liu Shuhan anxious and frustrated. She developed several sores in her mouth that hurt even when drinking water, spending her days holding her cheeks with a frown.
One day, while they were sorting through a pile of packages for delivery, little Wang nearby chuckled.
“Did you find some money? Why are you grinning like an idiot?” one of her coworkers teased.
"There is a wealthy customer here. I just counted, and today she has fifteen packages all by herself!"
"Really? What a coincidence! Fifteen packages all from the same courier company?"
"Otherwise, would I be so surprised?" Xiao Wang said dismissively.
"What is this customer's name?"
"Her surname is Cheng... her name is Cheng Muto... Hey! Xiao Liu, isn't this your area?"
Liu Shuhan was in a bad mood, her head hanging low as she sorted the packages. Hearing someone call her, she slowly raised her head and asked, "What’s up?"
"Xiao Liu, have you lost your spirit these days? I mean, the manager is known for being harsh. Just hearing it is enough; remembering it will only upset you more. Anyway, the packages you’re responsible for have been sorted out. You can go deliver them; we’ll handle things here."
Among the couriers, Liu Shuhan was the only woman. The male couriers usually took care of her. Liu Shuhan had a personality where she felt she had to return any kindness shown to her, often bringing food for them to share. The group had a good relationship overall.
They thought Liu Shuhan was in a bad mood because she had been scolded by the manager. She didn’t bother to explain and loaded the packages onto the back seat of her electric vehicle before driving off.
"Hello, are you Cheng Muto? I’m a delivery person from HT Logistics, and I have a package for you." Liu Shuhan took out one package and realized there was another, and another... In total, she pulled out fifteen packages. She quickly apologized to the customer, "I’m sorry; that was my mistake. It’s not one package; it’s fifteen..."
On the other end of the line came a familiar light laugh that Liu Shuhan knew all too well. "I’m at home; please bring them up."
Liu Shuhan was taken aback. "Qiu Yi?"
"That’s right! You remember me; I haven’t lost my memory."
"You... how did you buy so many things?"
"I wanted to; do you have any objections? Hurry up and bring them up, or I’ll file a complaint against you."
The sound of a dial tone came through the phone. Liu Shuhan didn’t dare delay any longer and carried a tall stack of boxes to Cheng Qiuyi's door, knocking by bumping her shoulder against it twice.
Cheng Qiuyi had just woken up and casually ran her fingers through her hair before opening the door for her. One strap of her camisole slipped down her arm, revealing a hint of her chest, which made Liu Shuhan's throat tighten.
"Why are you wearing so little when your air conditioning is set so low? Aren't you afraid of catching a cold?" Liu Shuhan placed Cheng Qiuyi's Courier by the door.
Cheng Qiuyi quickly put on a jacket. "Come in."
Liu Shuhan looked at the hoodie Cheng Qiuyi was wearing and felt it looked familiar. "Hey, isn't that my shirt? I was wondering where it went; turns out it's with you!"
"I invited you in, so why are you just standing there?"
Looking at her dirty shoes, Liu Shuhan hesitated. "I’m still busy delivering the Courier, so... I won't come in. Just remember to eat something warm later. I’ll head out now."
"Liu Shuhan, if you don't come in soon, I'm going to be angry," Cheng Qiuyi said coldly, giving Liu Shuhan a pointed look.
Startled by her gaze, Liu Shuhan instinctively jumped inside. Only then did Cheng Qiuyi smile, pulling her hand and pressing her down onto the sofa. "Look at you, all sweaty and tired. Have some water and take a break."
After finishing the water, Cheng Qiuyi brought out some cut fruit. "Are you hungry after working all morning? Have some fruit to tide you over. There's a new restaurant nearby that’s really good; I'll take you there later." Without waiting for a response, she started feeding Liu Shuhan, who ended up with her cheeks stuffed like a squirrel.
"I... I still have work to do..." Liu Shuhan protested weakly after finally swallowing the fruit.
Setting down the fruit plate with a sigh, Cheng Qiuyi asked, "Am I scaring you?"
"Huh?" Liu Shuhan replied, confused about where that came from.
