The next day, I went to the Imperial Garden.
In the garden, there was a swing that Han Wen had specially made for me. She said that since I liked swinging, she would build one for me. At that time, it was the happiest period of my life. Han Wen, Jiang Zhizhu, and I were always together—reading, practicing calligraphy, and painting. Those days were filled with joy.
But then, everything changed. When I returned to Chunlu Palace, it was already dark. Biqiong lit the candles, and the hall brightened up. I walked over to the low couch and leaned against it, staring blankly at the flickering candlelight.
Biqiong said, "If you find it boring, Your Highness, perhaps you should rest early." I nodded and allowed Biqiong to assist me to the bedside. However, once I lay down, I couldn't fall asleep no matter what. With my eyes closed, all I could see in my mind were the faces of Han Wen and Jiang Zhizhu.
In a daze, I fell into a dream. In the dream, I returned to my childhood. My mother, Han Wen, Jiang Zhizhu, and I were sitting in the courtyard. My mother was peeling an orange while Han Wen and Jiang Zhizhu played with a cat. I moved a small stool and sat beside Han Wen, looking up at her and asking, "Han Wen, are you going to live with us forever?"
Han Wen smiled and pinched my cheek gently. She softly replied, "Yes, Huan, are you happy?" I nodded and beamed brightly: "Happy! I like Han Wen the most!"
Han Wen smiled even more happily; she leaned closer and pressed her cheek against mine, whispering, " Huan, I like you the most too."
"Don't worry, I will always be with you."
Hearing this made me extremely happy.
I turned to share my joy with Jiang Zhizhu, but saw him with his head down, looking unwell.
I asked him, "Brother, what's wrong?"
Jiang Zhizhu shook his head and said, "It's nothing."
"I'm just a bit tired."
I responded with an "oh," then turned back to look at Han Wen.
Han Wen gently patted my head and said, " Huan, you need to listen to Zhiwei from now on."
"He is your elder brother; you must respect and value him."
I nodded obediently in agreement.
Han Wen smiled with satisfaction, reached out her hand, and hugged me gently while swaying me.
She said, " Huan, you must always stay with me."
"We need to be together forever."
I opened my eyes; it was already bright outside.
Biqiong was standing by the bed, looking at me with a worried expression.
Seeing that I was awake, she hurried over and asked, "My lady, did you have a nightmare?"
I shook my head and wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes.
"It wasn't a nightmare."
"It was a good dream."
Biqiong paused for a moment; she seemed like she wanted to say something but ultimately held it back.
She helped me sit up, draped my outer garment over my shoulders, and led me to sit in front of the mirror.
Biqiong's hands were skilled; she could always style my hair beautifully.
I stared at the person in the mirror, momentarily lost in thought.
I have been looking at this face for twenty years, yet even now, I still find it beautiful. Han Wen once said that my face was unforgettable to her. She also mentioned wanting me to be her husband. At that time, I agreed. But now, I regret it.
After having breakfast, I sat on the soft couch drinking tea. Biqiong suddenly rushed in. She leaned close to my ear and whispered, "My lord, the Empress has gone to the Imperial Study." The Imperial Study is where Han Wen handles state affairs. What is Jiang Zhizhu doing there? I furrowed my brows, feeling a sense of unease.
By the time Jiang Zhizhu came out of the Imperial Study, it was already noon. Biqiong said that after leaving the Imperial Study, Jiang Zhizhu went straight back to the palace.
