I smiled bitterly and looked up at Han Wen; her face was filled with fatigue and anxiety, far from the calmness she once exuded. "Alright, I agree."
In the end, I nodded in acceptance; after all, I had no choice. A smile of joy appeared on Han Wen's face as she stepped forward to embrace me, softly saying, " Huan, thank you."
"Once Jiang Zhizhu detoxifies, I will make it up to you." Her voice was soft, carrying a hint of a sigh.
"Okay." I softly replied, slowly closing my eyes.
On the day the decree for the empress was issued, I stood there in a daze, unable to regain my senses for a long time.
Han Wen had finally ascended to the throne she had always desired. But as I looked at the bright yellow decree, the name Jiang Zhizhu stood out prominently.
The Court Lady congratulated me, and I accepted the imperial edict with a blank expression. Just then, Han Wen came down from court to see me. With a beaming smile, she asked, " Huan, aren't you happy?"
"Zhiwei is your Elder Brother; he was born weak. Now that he has become the empress, you two can look after each other."
She squatted down in front of me, holding my hand with a tenderness I had never seen before.
" Huan, you have always been sensible and know how to behave. I believe you will treat Zhiwei well."
Suddenly, I remembered how she had spoken to me with such gentleness a few years ago. She had said, " Huan, once I ascend to the throne, I will grant you a phoenix crown and flowing robes."
But now that she had taken the throne, she would grant those to someone else. The one she promised was my Elder Brother, Jiang Zhizhu.
I lowered my gaze and replied softly. Because I loved Han Wen, I was willing to do anything for her.
Han Wen kissed my forehead and said, " Huan, be good. I will handle state affairs well and take you to the summer palace to escape the heat."
It was summer at that time; I nodded and obediently replied.
I watched Han Wen leave; she wore her Ceremonial Robe, with golden dragons embroidered on her Dragon Robe that looked vividly alive.
I had imagined countless times how magnificent my phoenix robe would be on the day I married Han Wen. But now, she wore the Ceremonial Robe for my Elder Brother.
My heart suddenly felt as if it were being squeezed by something, aching terribly.
It wasn't until Han Wen's figure disappeared deep within the palace walls that I slowly closed the hall door.
