It has been three years since I broke up with Cheng Yong, and I am still working at his uncle Cheng Minghua's company. My colleagues are outwardly friendly to me, but behind my back, they laugh and say that I got this job because of my boyfriend and that I am still clinging to it after the breakup. In their eyes, I must be unwilling to give up the high salary, not wanting to let go of my annual income of three hundred thousand.
As I was carrying tea past my workstation, I overheard a few colleagues chatting in the break room. "Fang Hui? I held the tea and listened intently. When they saw me, they immediately fell silent, looking a bit nervous: "Fang Hui, we were just joking; don't take it seriously." "What joke? I'm here for the money." I smiled at them and swallowed what I had just heard.
My colleagues were stunned, probably not expecting me to be so straightforward. In fact, they were right; I was indeed staying here for the money. But what does it matter?
The West City Project is a key development project for Cheng Group this year. After submitting the Project Proposal, Cheng Minghua's secretary called me into the conference room. Nervously, I handed over my Project Proposal: "Manager Cheng, this is the Project Proposal for the East City Project."
Cheng Minghua took it, his long fingers flipping open the first page as he quickly skimmed through it. He nodded slightly, his tone indifferent: "Hmm, well written." I let out a long sigh of relief.
Cheng Minghua looked up, his gaze sweeping across my face before pausing: "Do you want to publish it in a collection of jokes?" I was taken aback, looking at him in confusion. A hint of a smile appeared at the corner of Cheng Minghua's mouth as he handed the Project Proposal to his assistant beside him.
He spoke in a relaxed tone, teasingly saying, "Otherwise, why would you show it to me? To make me laugh?"
The people in the conference room couldn't help but chuckle, even his assistant couldn't suppress a smile.
It was only then that I realized what was happening, and my face instantly turned as red as a persimmon.
I quietly retracted the Project Proposal and returned to my seat.
I could hear my colleagues whispering around me.
"Fang Hui is really disliked by manager Cheng."
"Isn't that right? She just got scolded by manager Cheng; it was hilarious."
"No wonder she got dumped; her work performance is so poor."
I knew that the reason Cheng Minghua disliked me must be related to that family gathering three years ago.
At that time, Cheng Yong brought me home to meet his parents. During dinner, Cheng Yong's Grandfather, Dad, and Mom took turns criticizing Cheng Yong's shortcomings.
I sat there silently, unable to interject or dare to refute them.
Only Cheng Minghua looked at me and said solemnly, "Fang Hui, do you think the same?"
I was taken aback for a moment and shook my head, "No, I don't think Cheng Yong has that many flaws."
Cheng Minghua sneered, "So you think his parents are slandering him?"
I shook my head again, "That's not what I mean..."
Cheng Minghua sneered once more: "Then your implication is that Cheng Yong is indeed quite lacking, and you aren't even willing to defend him."
I had no words to retort and sat there awkwardly.
Later on, both Cheng Yong's Grandfather and my parents had a poor impression of me.
Only Cheng Minghua, despite not liking me, still gave a fair assessment: "Graduated from a 985 university and hired by Cheng Group; that's considered a high-educated talent."
