After walking about a thousand steps through the white jade-like Stalactite passage, I gradually saw a cave entrance glowing with white light not far ahead. Taking a deep breath, I felt a bit sentimental. It had been so many years since I last saw him; I had grown from a half-grown child into an adult. I wondered how that old man had been all these years.
Shaking my head at this thought, I realized I was being overly sentimental. That old man was a creature who had lived for thousands of years. Seven years felt long to me, but to him, it was merely a fleeting moment. As I approached the cave entrance, I steeled myself and stepped through.
Although there were Night Pearls inside the cave emitting light, it was still not as bright as the outside. As I emerged, I felt slightly disoriented and squinted my eyes. Once they adjusted, a marvelous scene unfolded before me.
The cave was situated high up, at the same elevation as the mountain, allowing for a clear view of vast landscapes. My gaze was drawn to a large lake that captured my full attention. The water was crystal clear and emerald green, reflecting like a mirror. The sun shone brightly, and the clouds floated like cotton, sparkling in the sunlight like shards of silver. Surrounding the lake were rolling mountains adorned with lush forests and bamboo groves, seemingly unaffected by the seasons, creating an enchanting spring-like atmosphere year-round.
The pristine lake water blended with the sky; initially distinct in color, it gradually merged into a hazy horizon where water met sky, revealing only white traces of their intersection. Looking out, my eyes were filled with shimmering water trails and layers of waves dancing freely in the wind. Refreshing mist rose from the crests of the waves and between the rocks.
Suddenly, a thunderous roar erupted from the lake's surface as massive bubbles began to rise from its center, resembling boiling water. The azure waves joyfully surged toward the shore in rhythmic beats against the stones, producing sounds akin to beautiful melodies as if someone were playing music.
With a loud crash, the lake parted to reveal a colossal creature emerging from its depths. To my astonishment, it was a dragon's head several meters long! It had features reminiscent of a Crocodile Beast with Antlers and two long catfish whiskers protruding from its mouth.
Its body was covered in fish-like black scales and had four claws beneath it; its elongated form curved in an 'S' shape. Even before fully breaking the surface, it measured nearly one hundred meters in length—truly imposing.
According to legend, dragons can be large or small, visible or hidden; they can soar through the cosmos or conceal themselves within turbulent waters. Dragons command clouds and rain, stirring up seas and rivers with boundless power.
Dragons are also the totem of the Chinese Nation; we refer to ourselves as descendants of dragons. In ancient times, emperors claimed to be True Dragon sons of heaven, illustrating how significant dragons are in the hearts of Huaxia People. At this moment, before me stood this hundred-meter giant dragon with its whiskers fluttering and enormous eyes fixed intently on me—a mere human.
However, despite facing such a terrifying dragon, Ye Mingshang showed no fear at all; instead, he appeared quite friendly. After locking eyes with the giant dragon for a moment, he suddenly smiled.
"Hi! Old man," Ye Mingshang greeted with a smile.
The Old Dragon let out a furious snort, its voice booming like thunder and resonating like a great bell, startling the nearby birds and beasts, and sending ripples across the calm lake, as if it commanded the heavens.
“Brat! You still know how to come back!” The Old Dragon glared with fierce eyes, its mouth opening and closing as it spoke in a deep, rumbling voice, exhaling two puffs of white mist from its nostrils.
“Haha! I just got back and it's already so Inferno here,” Ye Mingshang said with his hands on his hips, laughing carefree.
“Hmph! You left without saying a word for Eight Years! Do you still have me, this old bone, in your eyes? Huh?!” The voice echoed throughout the entire valley like a great bell.
“I was wrong back then. I apologize to you, so stop being petty, old man,” Ye Mingshang said with a smile while scratching his head.
Calling him "old man" seemed to act like a precious elixir, dissolving all of the Old Dragon's dissatisfaction and resentment. After all, he still regarded Ye Mingshang as his son. Although one was human and the other was a dragon, they shared an extraordinary bond that transcended the ordinary father-son relationship. The Old Dragon was indeed very indulgent towards Ye Mingshang, who was a True Dragon, but had evolved step by step from a small snake.
Now that the dragon clan was dwindling in numbers, there was only him, the True Dragon of the Underworld River, while the others were merely lesser beings like the Azure Dragon and Triceratops. However, back then, Ye Mingshang had stolen an Azure Dragon egg out of gluttony. Even so, the Old Dragon only punished him sternly without imposing any heavy penalties.
It should be noted that he was a dragon; although he was one level above the Azure Dragon, he had once been an Azure Dragon himself—his own kin! The fact that he could allow Ye Mingshang to consume it showed just how spoiled he was towards this human son.
The term "old man" melted away his inner grievances, but on the surface, he still pretended to be angry and stern. One might wonder if this aspect of Ye Mingshang's Tsundere personality had anything to do with him.
After giving a stern lecture, the Old Dragon finally appeared to calm down, while Ye Mingshang did not retort at all and maintained an attitude of attentive learning. This demeanor pleased the Old Dragon, as it seemed that after all these years, the once mischievous Brat had finally grown up.
“Hmph! You little rascal, if you dare to leave without saying goodbye again, don’t come back! Your mother has missed you dearly after all these years; go see her.” With that deep rumble of a voice, the Old Dragon dove back into the water with a splash.
Ye Mingshang shook his head with a wry smile. Why did the old man always like to soak in water? Was it a habit left over from when he was still an Azure Dragon?
"Shh!" Ye Mingshang pressed his index finger to his lips and let out a loud whistle. The sound was melodious and clear, gradually fading away into the distance.
After a few dozen seconds, accompanied by a crisp bird call, a large bird with an entirely azure body flew in from the far horizon. The bird was slightly smaller than a white crane, but still quite massive compared to ordinary birds, with a wingspan of nearly 5 meters.
Caw!~
From afar, seeing the familiar figure, the bird joyfully cried out, seemingly welcoming the person's return. It flew swiftly, covering the distance in just a few breaths, flapping its wings as it gently approached Ye Mingshang, transforming mid-air two meters in front of him into a graceful young girl under the azure glow.
"Brother Ye, I missed you so much!" The girl in mid-air laughed cheerfully, her voice like the tinkling of spring water, very pleasant to hear. She then propelled herself towards the smiling and warm Ye Mingshang.
Seeing the familiar girl made Ye Mingshang very happy as he steadied himself to catch her, spinning around to counter her momentum before gently setting her down.
"It's been so many years, and you're still so mischievous," Ye Mingshang smiled as he playfully tapped the girl's pert nose with his finger.
This girl was a descendant of the Azure Luan Bird, just like him once picked up by the Underworld River. However, unlike Ye Mingshang, she did not become his child. She arrived later and often received care from Ye Mingshang, so she called him "Brother Ye" and shared a close relationship with him.
The Azure Phoenix, also known as Cangluan, is said to be one of five types of phoenixes. Its wings are as blue as the dawn sky and emit a soft glow under the sun. Pure Azure Phoenixes have extremely long lifespans, rumored to last for thousands of years; however, this girl was not a purebred Azure Phoenix but merely had some bloodline within her.
The girl transformed from this beautiful Luan Bird was exceptionally stunning herself: her long black hair, slender willow-like eyebrows, eyes sparkling like gems, a delicate nose, slightly flushed cheeks, and luscious lips that seemed ready to bloom. Her snow-white face was crystal clear like jade, her skin smooth and fair like mutton-fat jade. The azure long dress she wore accentuated her graceful figure beautifully.
Undoubtedly, such beauty could topple nations and was truly captivating enough to mesmerize men and make women envious. However, despite her stunning appearance, Ye Mingshang's gaze remained clear as water without any hint of malice—only filled with affection akin to that of an older brother towards his sister.
The girl giggled playfully with her hands behind her back, teasingly looking at Ye Mingshang: "I'm only this mischievous with you; I'm quite fierce with others!"
Gently stroking the girl's hair, Ye Mingshang asked, "Have you been doing well these years? Is there anyone who dares to bully you?"
"I'm really strong now; I bully others instead. No one dares to bully me," the girl proudly tilted her head back, looking quite impressive.
"Hehe, you truly are my Ling'er, just amazing," Ye Mingshang chuckled while scratching his head.
"Of course! I'm the sister of this great demon lord, how could I be bullied?" Ling'er said proudly. Then her expression shifted as she lowered her head and pouted, looking quite aggrieved. "But, Brother Ye, you haven't been around, and I have no friends. No one plays with me."
Feeling the girl's dependence on him, Ye Mingshang felt a wave of guilt. He affectionately stroked her hair and said softly, "It's my fault. This time I'll stay home for a while and spend time with you, okay?"
"Really? You can't go back on your word! Let's make a pinky promise!" The girl jumped up happily, extending her slender, fair fingers.
Ye Mingshang smiled and extended his hand as well, their pinkies linking together.
"Pinky promise, if we break it, we'll be little puppies!" The girl wiggled her fingers, and finally pressed their thumbs together lightly to seal the promise.
"How is Mother doing?" Ye Mingshang asked.
"Auntie's health isn't very good. A couple of years ago during the Thunder Tribulation, she reached the Source and hasn't recovered since," the girl said with a worried look in her eyes. It's important to note that although she was not as involved in worldly matters as Underworld River, she had a very close relationship with Underworld River's wife, Bai Xiangxue. Although she called her Auntie, they were like mother and daughter.
Ye Mingshang's expression changed slightly. He truly regarded Bai Xiangxue as a mother figure as well; she had always treated him kindly. Whenever Underworld River scolded him when he was young, it was Bai Xiangxue who defended him and pleaded on his behalf. Now that his mother was injured, how could he possibly feel at ease?
