Happy times always pass quickly, and soon it was approaching midnight. Ye Mingshang received a call from Director Lu and it was time to leave. Old Ma had already gone somewhere with Tang Xiaowei to have a heart-to-heart talk; all he hoped was that Ma wouldn't get too excited and do something out of line.
Since Prosperous Dynasty was open all day, everyone could choose to stay until dawn if they wanted. Being rated six stars meant more than just having a meal; the banquet hall had excellent soundproofing and audio equipment, and some playful guests were already having fun with the microphone.
Not wanting to disturb them, Ye Mingshang stood up to leave, and Haitang, who had been quietly following him, also stood up silently. When they reached the door, Ye Mingshang stopped, and Haitang accidentally bumped into his back as she couldn't stop in time. Haitang looked up at Ye Mingshang, who had turned around, then quickly lowered her head again.
"Why are you following me?"
"I... I want to go with you," Haitang's voice was low but firm.
"Are you going to follow me to the restroom too?" Ye Mingshang laughed.
"The restroom isn't this way; there’s one in the banquet hall."
"Pretty smart. What if I’m tired and want to go sleep in a hotel? Are you coming with me then?" Ye Mingshang leaned down, resting his ear close to Haitang.
"I know you're not. I heard your phone call; there’s something dangerous going on, right? I want to go with you," Haitang looked up, her big eyes staring intently at Ye Mingshang.
Ye Mingshang was amused and looked at the short-haired girl with a smile. "Little girl, knowing there's danger and still wanting to go along—are you sure you're okay?"
"I want to go with you."
"Impossible. Do we know each other that well? Go back; wait until they finish having fun before leaving together. If you want to go home, I can arrange a car for you," Ye Mingshang's smile faded as his expression returned to calm.
"I know you have someone you like, although I don’t know who it is. But even if you don’t like me, you can’t stop me from liking you," Haitang's gaze was unwavering. "This is the first time I've felt this way about a boy in my life. No matter what, you can't shake me off unless I give up."
Seeing such a determined Haitang surprised Ye Mingshang. Although he hadn’t interacted much with her, she had always given the impression of being an introverted, shy girl who focused on her studies. No one had ever associated her with being strong-willed, but the reality before him was undeniable.
"Don't blame me if something happens," Ye Mingshang said, giving her a deep look before turning to leave.
Without any hesitation, Haitang followed closely behind him. When they reached downstairs, a police car was already waiting. It wasn't Xu Chen driving but Lu Mingxuan, who greeted Ye Mingshang politely upon seeing him.
"Get in the car quickly," Ye Mingshang urged after acknowledging him.
"Oh... okay." Although he didn't understand why it was so urgent, he chose to obey the other person's command. However, the car, which had always been reliable, refused to start after a long while, making a sputtering noise without igniting.
"Isn't it working yet?" Ye Mingshang frowned.
"It was fine just now, but suddenly it won't start," Lu Mingxuan said anxiously as he fiddled with the car.
Humm! Humm! The low rumble of the engine sounded.
"It's started!" Lu Mingxuan exclaimed with a smile, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
At that moment, Haitang had already opened the car door and breathlessly sat inside, wiping the sweat from her forehead while casting a resentful glance at Ye Mingshang. Ye Mingshang held his head in pain, and this scene was perfectly captured by Lu Mingxuan in the driver's seat, who suddenly had a wild idea and began to speculate.
So Master Ye was in such a hurry because he was avoiding this woman? Why would he want to avoid her? It shouldn't be out of fear, right? What could he be afraid of? Men fear women either because they are overpowered or because they have feelings for them. Besides that, there’s another reason: owing a debt of affection. Was Master Ye trying to escape because he slept with her and didn't want to take responsibility? Could he really be that kind of person? The girl's resentful expression was definitely telling; otherwise, which girl would chase after a man like this?
Sigh~ Master Ye, how could you be so foolish? I used to admire you so much; how could you do something like this? If you've gotten involved with someone, you should take responsibility; how can you run away?
"Why aren't you driving?" Ye Mingshang said irritably.
But Lu Mingxuan didn't start driving immediately. Instead, he turned around and looked at Ye Mingshang with intense eyes. In his wild imagination, he had already labeled Ye Mingshang as a scoundrel who wanted to take advantage and then walk away without any responsibility.
"Master Ye, I'm calling you Master Ye. Although you're very capable and I admire you a lot, you can't do something like this. Is this what a man should do? A man should be responsible for his actions; if you've done something, you need to take responsibility. Running away like this—what does that mean? If you keep this up, even if you're a master, I'll still catch you and tell you."
Lu Mingxuan pointed at Ye Mingshang's nose and scolded him fiercely, leaving Ye Mingshang completely bewildered. What does it mean to be responsible? What have I done? What am I running away from? Am I going crazy?!
"What do you mean?" Ye Mingshang frowned.
"No, Master Ye, why are you pretending not to understand?" Lu Mingxuan said with a furrowed brow as he rubbed his hair. "I mean since you've slept with that girl, you should take responsibility. How can you just take advantage and leave? Is that something a person would do? I used to think of you as an idol; how could you do something like this? Oh my!" Lu Mingxuan closed his eyes and rubbed them.
Hearing this, Ye Mingshang finally understood what was going on; it turned out this guy thought he had something going on with Haitang. Looking at Lu Mingxuan's righteous demeanor made him laugh in anger.
"Are you out of your mind? Who told you I have anything to do with her?"
"Isn't it obvious? Do I really need to say it?" Lu Mingxuan shrugged, looking exasperated. "Did you just get in the car and start urging me to drive?"
"Yeah," Ye Mingshang nodded.
"Are you trying to avoid someone?"
"Yeah."
"Do you not want to take her with you?"
"Yeah."
"Did you sleep with her?"
"No."
"Oh come on, why won't you just admit it?!" Lu Mingxuan leaned his head back against the seat, pounding his fist on the backrest.
"I didn't do anything, what should I admit?! She just insisted on following us," Ye Mingshang said, now a bit angry, frowning at Lu Mingxuan.
"Wait, you..." Lu Mingxuan wanted to say more but was interrupted by Ye Mingshang's cold glare.
"If you want to endanger more people, just keep whining here like a bitter woman."
Hearing this, Lu Mingxuan had no choice but to drop the topic and drove with a conflicted expression. Meanwhile, Haitang stifled a laugh beside them, making Ye Mingshang's face darken even more.
Perhaps due to his frustration needing an outlet, Lu Mingxuan drove at breakneck speed. A car that was over a decade old somehow felt like a sports car under his control. Fortunately, all the traffic lights were flashing yellow at that hour; otherwise, he would have run several red lights. In less than ten minutes of this reckless driving style, they arrived at the New Development Zone, which was over ten kilometers away.
With a screech of tires, the car drifted to a stop right in front of Director Lu, who was preparing to greet them. The sudden stop startled him; he thought the car had broken down. The first one to get out wasn't Ye Mingshang, whom he had been waiting for, but his nephew Lu Mingxuan, who angrily slammed the car door and walked off, leaving Director Lu confused.
Just as he was about to ask what was going on, the car door opened again. He smiled broadly in anticipation of Ye Mingshang's arrival, but instead, a short-haired beauty in her twenties got out and immediately rushed to a corner to vomit. He was still puzzled when the car door opened once more. This time, a sullen-faced Ye Mingshang stepped out.
"Master Ye, we finally meet," Director Lu said enthusiastically as he shook hands with Ye Mingshang.
As the saying goes, one should not strike a smiling face. Ye Mingshang did not take offense and offered a symbolic handshake. Noticing that Ye Mingshang was in a bad mood, Director Lu curiously inquired about it, only to find out that his nephew had made baseless assumptions and upset Ye Mingshang. Upon hearing this, he immediately felt frustrated and quickly apologized to Ye Mingshang, promising to teach Lu Mingxuan a lesson.
"No need for that. He just has too much sense of justice. However, I must say that as a police officer, having a sense of justice is essential, but one must not rely on intuition and unfounded speculation to determine facts. Acting on emotions like that is even more frightening than the criminals themselves," Ye Mingshang waved his hand and said.
"Yes, yes, I'll have a good talk with him when I get back. This kid has no one at home; I've raised him myself, and I've spoiled him over the years. Sigh!" Director Lu sighed.
Not delving deeper into those matters, Ye Mingshang asked about the progress of the case. Director Lu responded:
"According to our analysis, the murderer targets solitary men in some remote alleys. We have set up bait in high-frequency areas and are just waiting for the murderer to take the bait."
"Alright, let's head over there now; it should be time for them to appear," Ye Mingshang nodded.
"What about that girl?" Director Lu pointed towards Haitang.
"Let's assign an officer to protect her," Ye Mingshang sighed helplessly.
Director Lu instructed one of the officers nearby to stay behind and then proceeded with Ye Mingshang towards the crime scene. Since they were waiting for the rabbit to come to them, they could not stand out in the open; everyone dispersed into concealed positions, waiting for the murderer to take the bait.
Director Lu led Ye Mingshang to a hidden corner where they could see a scruffy-looking man not far away pouring liquor from a bottle. It was a clever idea; this excuse would allow the bait to stay in one place for an extended period, and drunken individuals are generally easier targets for criminals.
Looking at the time, it was already a quarter past twelve—Midnight. This was the transitional hour between two days when Yin Qi was at its peak. Ghosts and monsters preferred to strike during this time because, besides enhancing their own powers, people were usually in a lethargic state, making them easier prey.
