After the morning classes ended, Li Xiaolu immediately picked up her phone and sent a message to Jijun.
"What are you doing?"
Jijun quickly replied, "Just finished eating, getting ready to rest."
Li Xiaolu: "How are you feeling today?"
Jijun: "Much better."
Li Xiaolu: "That's good. Remember to take your medicine on time."
Jijun: "Okay."
Li Xiaolu: "I don't have classes in the afternoon. Can I come over to your house?"
Jijun: "Sure."
Li Xiaolu felt sweet inside as she looked at the words on her phone screen. She packed her things, left school, and took a bus to Jijun's house. On the way, she bought some fruit and a bowl of chicken soup for Jijun.
When she arrived at Jijun's house, she knocked on the door. Jijun opened it, smiled slightly upon seeing her, and said, "You're here."
Li Xiaolu nodded and walked in with a smile, placing the fruit and chicken soup on the table.
Jijun looked at her and asked, "Why did you buy more stuff?"
Li Xiaolu smiled, "It's all to help you with your nutrition."
Jijun gazed at her with deep eyes. Li Xiaolu felt a bit shy under his gaze and lowered her head. "Um, I'm going to wash my hands." She turned and walked into the bathroom.
After washing her hands and coming out, she noticed that Jijun was no longer in the living room. Li Xiaolu walked to the bedroom door and knocked gently. "Jijun, I'm coming in."
From inside came Jijun's low voice, "Come in."
Li Xiaolu pushed the door open and entered.
Jijun was leaning against the headboard reading a book. Upon seeing her enter, he put down the book.
Li Xiaolu walked to the bedside and placed the fruit and chicken soup on the nightstand. "I brought you some fruit and chicken soup; drink it while it's hot."
Jijun looked at her and said, "Thank you."
Li Xiaolu smiled back, "You're welcome."
Jijun continued to look at her. "You don't have classes this afternoon?"
Li Xiaolu nodded, "Yeah."
Jijun asked, "What do you want to do?"
Li Xiaolu blinked her eyes playfully, "Can I keep you company and chat?"
Jijun smiled slightly, "Sure."
The two sat on the bed and began to chat.
They talked about music, then movies, and from movies to society, covering everything from the south to the north. Li Xiaolu really enjoyed this feeling of being with someone she liked; even just chatting simply made her feel very happy.
As they chatted, Li Xiaolu suddenly remembered something. "Jijun, when is your birthday?"
Jijun looked at her and asked, "Why do you want to know that?"
Li Xiaolu smiled, "I want to prepare a birthday gift for you."
Jijun replied, "My birthday is still a while away."
Li Xiaolu pressed on, "So what day is it exactly?"
After a moment of silence, Jijun said, "June 16th."
Li Xiaolu blinked, "Isn't that coming up soon?"
Jijun nodded, "Yeah."
Li Xiaolu smiled and asked, "What do you want for your birthday?"
Jijun looked at her and said, "You."
Li Xiaolu was taken aback for a moment before her cheeks flushed bright red. She lowered her head and murmured, "I... I'm not a gift."
Jijun chuckled softly, "But you're more precious than any gift."
Li Xiaolu lifted her head to look at him. "Jijun, I'm really happy."
Jijun gazed at her gently and asked, "Happy about what?"
Li Xiaolu smiled again, "I'm happy to know you and happy to be with you."
Jijun looked at her with warm eyes. "Me too."
...
Around four in the afternoon, Li Xiaolu left Jijun's house. She walked down the street in a good mood with light steps. She wanted to hurry home and tell Zhang Lin about the happiness she felt today. As she walked, she took out her phone and called Zhang Lin.
After a few rings, the call connected.
Zhang Lin said, "Hello, Lulu, why are you calling me at this time?"
Li Xiaolu replied with a smile, "Linlin, I'm really happy today."
Zhang Lin asked, "Why are you happy? Did you find money? Win the lottery?"
Li Xiaolu laughed lightly, "No, it's..." She paused for a moment. "It's because Jijun's birthday is coming up."
Zhang Lin responded, "Oh, so you're going to celebrate his birthday?"
Li Xiaolu nodded. "Yeah."
Zhang Lin smiled and said, "Then you better prepare well; don't let him down."
Li Xiaolu chuckled, "I will."
Zhang Lin then asked, "So what are you planning to give him as a gift?"
Li Xiaolu thought for a moment, "I... I haven't figured it out yet."
Zhang Lin sighed, "Then hurry up and think of something, or you'll be caught off guard later."
Li Xiaolu nodded, "Okay."
After hanging up the phone, Li Xiaolu continued walking forward.
As she walked, she pondered what gift to give Jijun.
She considered many options but felt that none were quite right.
She wanted to give a special gift to Jijun, one that could represent her feelings.
Lost in thought, Li Xiaolu reached the intersection.
She stopped to wait for the traffic light.
Suddenly, a loud honk pierced the air.
Li Xiaolu turned her head and saw a car speeding towards her.
The car was moving extremely fast and showed no signs of slowing down.
Li Xiaolu's pupils dilated, and her mind went blank.
She stood there in a daze, watching the car get closer and closer.
Bang—
Li Xiaolu was thrown into the air.
A sharp pain shot through her as she curled up on the ground, clutching her left leg, trembling from the agony.
A crowd gathered around her, murmuring in concern.
Li Xiaolu could only hear a buzzing in her ears; everything else was unclear.
The driver frantically pulled out their phone to call the police and then dialed for an ambulance.
Enduring the pain, Li Xiaolu took out her phone and called Zhang Lin.
After a few rings, the call connected.
Zhang Lin: "Hello, Lulu, what's wrong?"
Li Xiaolu gritted her teeth against the pain, "Linlin, I... I've had an accident."
