Zhang Lin also saw it and slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching against the pavement as the car came to a sudden stop. Li Xiaolu leaned forward slightly before falling back heavily into her seat. She glanced at the rearview mirror and was relieved to see that the car behind them was far enough away to avoid a collision.
Zhang Lin was furious and shouted, "Are you crazy? If you want to die, don't drag me into it!"
Li Xiaolu looked at the man who had caused the commotion. He was wearing black leather shoes, dress pants, a white shirt, and a loosely hanging tie around his neck, giving him a lazy appearance. His skin was very fair, with a high nose bridge and thin, sexy lips. His features were exquisite and deep-set, forming a handsome face, but he exuded an air of coldness and detachment.
The man seemed not to hear Zhang Lin's outburst and walked straight to the passenger seat, opening the door and sitting down.
Zhang Lin: "..."
Li Xiaolu: "..."
Zhang Lin couldn't help but curse again, "Are you deaf? Didn't you hear me calling you?"
The man remained silent, turning his head to look at Li Xiaolu. His amber eyes were beautiful yet indifferent, as if devoid of any emotion.
He said to Li Xiaolu, "Sorry." His voice was pleasant—deep and magnetic.
Li Xiaolu shook her head and replied, "It's fine."
Zhang Lin scoffed and added, "Next time be more careful; not everyone is as easygoing as we are."
The man simply responded with a faint "mm."
Zhang Lin rolled her eyes and ignored him, starting the car again as they continued driving. The vehicle moved slowly forward, and the interior was extremely quiet.
Feeling a bit awkward, Li Xiaolu tried to break the silence by asking, "Where are you headed?"
"Just wandering around," the man replied.
Li Xiaolu responded with an "oh" and fell silent again.
The atmosphere in the carriage fell into silence once again. After a while, the man suddenly spoke up, "What’s your name?"
Li Xiaolu glanced at him and replied, "Li Xiaolu."
"Li Xiaolu..." The man softly repeated the name, a strange look flashing in his eyes. He turned his head to look out the window and fell silent again.
Li Xiaolu watched him, feeling a bit odd. She had always kept her distance from strangers because they lacked a sense of boundaries. But this man was sitting right next to her so openly and even started a conversation.
That was a month ago. Li Xiaolu was at the airport, just stepping off the plane with her suitcase in tow. She was trying to figure out a ride-hailing app when someone greeted her, "Hello."
Li Xiaolu looked up and saw a man. He was wearing black leather shoes, dress pants, a white shirt, and a tie that hung loosely around his neck, giving off a casual vibe. His skin was very fair, with high cheekbones and thin, sexy lips; his features were delicate and deep-set, making for an attractive face, yet he exuded an air of coldness and detachment.
The man looked at her and pointed to the suitcase beside her. "Is this yours?"
Following his finger, Li Xiaolu realized that the suitcase she was holding was not quite hers. She quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry." She hurriedly swapped her suitcase back.
The man replied calmly, "It's okay." His tone was very composed; he didn’t seem upset about the mix-up.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Li Xiaolu said, "I really apologize; I wasn't paying attention."
The man asked, "Are you here to study?"
"Um..." Li Xiaolu paused and said, "No, I came here for tourism, but I got stood up."
The man raised an eyebrow slightly. "Oh?"
"Yeah," Li Xiaolu shrugged helplessly and continued, "I originally bought a ticket to go back home, but I had to change it at the last minute due to some issues, and unexpectedly, someone stood me up."
The man nodded and didn't say anything further.
The atmosphere became a bit awkward.
Li Xiaolu wanted to say something to ease the tension but felt unsure of what to say.
Suddenly, the man spoke up, "I'm actually heading to Chinatown as well. If you don't have anywhere else to go, you can come with me."
Li Xiaolu was a bit surprised. "Huh?"
The man looked at her. "You don't want to?"
"No, of course not," Li Xiaolu quickly shook her head and said, "I just feel... like I'm bothering you."
"It's no trouble at all," the man replied calmly. "I have nothing else going on anyway."
"Well..." Li Xiaolu hesitated for a moment and said, "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
After saying this, the man fell silent.
He lowered his head and stared at the ground, seemingly lost in thought.
