Li Xiaolu walked alone on the bustling streets of New York City, carrying her canvas bag on a summer night. The traffic was heavy, and the lights were bright; in this world-class metropolis, people were busy hustling for their lives. Even at night, the city remained vibrant and lively.
Li Xiaolu navigated through the crowd, entered her apartment building, and took the elevator back to her small home. The refrigerator contained tomatoes and noodles, so she cooked a bowl of tomato noodles for a late-night snack while preparing for upcoming deadlines.
New York, Manhattan. This was her third year away from home. She had grown accustomed to living alone—without family, without a partner, and with only a handful of friends. However, Li Xiaolu did not feel sorry for herself; she had adapted to this lifestyle and found contentment in it.
She poured herself a glass of water and had just sat down when her phone rang. It was Yu Min calling.
“Lulu, I’m going back to China,” Yu Min said calmly but firmly, as if she had made up her mind.
Li Xiaolu paused for a moment and asked, “Did you have a fight with Dad?”
Yu Min simply replied, “You’re coming back with me.”
“…”
Li Xiaolu was momentarily at a loss for words. After a long silence, she finally spoke up, “Does Dad know you’re going back?”
“He…” Yu Min began but suddenly the call was disconnected.
Li Xiaolu tried calling back, but there was no answer. A sense of unease crept into her heart; Yu Min and Zhao Yi had always had a good relationship, and she had never heard of them arguing before. Could something have happened this time?
Li Xiaolu called Zhao Yi next, but there was no answer from him either.
Li Xiaolu had no choice but to buy a plane ticket to return home. The recent direct flights were sold out, leaving only connecting flights available, and the soonest one was two weeks away.
Li Xiaolu booked her flight for two weeks later and then called Zhang Lin. "Zhang Lin, I'm going back home."
"You’re going back?" Zhang Lin asked in shock. "What for?"
"It seems my mom and stepfather have some issues; I need to check on them."
"..." After a moment of silence, Zhang Lin said, "I happen to be going to Korea for a talent show. Why don't we skip class together?"
Li Xiaolu nodded. "Sure, just let me know when you buy your ticket."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Li Xiaolu placed her phone on the table and opened her computer to get back to work.
Late at night, she sat in her chair, staring out at the pitch-black sky with not a single star in sight. Suddenly, her heart skipped a beat, and she felt a wave of anxiety wash over her, but she quickly regained her composure.
She pressed her hand against her heart and gently rubbed it, muttering to herself, "I guess I'm just too tired." She had been so busy that she hadn’t had time to think about anything else.
It wasn't until just before boarding that Li Xiaolu texted Yu Min to let her know what time her flight was and approximately when she would arrive.
After a long wait, Yu Min finally replied: "You don't need to come back; we've made up."
Li Xiaolu was taken aback. She sat on the bench in the waiting area, feeling a mix of emotions as she read Yu Min's message.
Eventually, she sighed and thought that if they had reconciled, then there was no need for her to go back after all. However, Zhang Lin must have already boarded; it was too late to contact her now.
Two hours later, the plane landed at Incheon International Airport in Korea.
Li Xiaolu dragged her suitcase out of the airport, feeling somewhat exhausted and helpless; her mother had stood her up.
As she waited for a taxi by the roadside, a red Lamborghini suddenly pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down to reveal Zhang Lin's smiling face. "Hello!"
Li Xiaolu asked in surprise, "Aren't you already on board? Why are you still here?"
"I heard you weren't going back, so of course I'm not going back either," Zhang Lin replied, winking at Li Xiaolu. "What do you think? Are you touched?"
Li Xiaolu couldn't help but laugh, "Touched, very touched."
She opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat, fastening her seatbelt. "Let's go back to New York."
"OK."
Zhang Lin drove away from the airport with her.
Not long after leaving the airport, Li Xiaolu suddenly saw a man walking towards the front of their car.
Li Xiaolu was startled and quickly shouted, "Watch out!"
