I picked up my phone and dialed Lingling's number. A cheerful ringtone played on the other end, but my mood grew heavier.
"Hello, Sister Man, what do you need?" When the call connected, Lingling's voice sounded a bit tired.
"Lingling, where are you right now?" I tried to keep my tone calm.
"I'm at the office, just finished a photo shoot. I'm exhausted," Lingling replied, her voice slightly nasal, as if she had a cold.
"Lingling, are you still taking that weight loss pill?" I finally couldn't hold back my concern.
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before Lingling's voice dropped: "Sister Man, how did you know?"
"Lingling, listen to me, stop taking that pill; it's too dangerous!" I nearly shouted. "I've come across some information recently that suggests that weight loss pill might contain a plant called Devil's Vine, which is highly toxic!"
"Sister Man, what are you saying?" Lingling's voice trembled, clearly frightened by my words.
"Lingling, listen to me..." I took a deep breath and tried to speak calmly. "The side effects of Devil's Vine are terrifying; it can lead to organ failure and even death! You must stop taking it!"
"I... I understand, Sister Man," Lingling's voice was barely audible, like an injured little animal.
"Lingling, please listen to me. I'm coming to the office right now; we need to go to the hospital for a check-up." I hung up the phone, grabbed my coat, and rushed out.
I hurriedly arrived at Lingling's company but saw a familiar figure at the entrance— brother Zhou. He was standing next to a black sedan, holding a cigarette and exhaling smoke with a gloomy expression.
A tightness gripped my heart as an ominous premonition washed over me. I quickly approached and grabbed brother Zhou's arm, demanding in a harsh tone, "Where is Lingling? What have you done to her?"
brother Zhou slowly turned his head and smirked coldly: "Xiao Man, long time no see."

" brother Zhou, stop with the useless talk; where is Lingling? Where did you take her?" I forcefully shook off brother Zhou's hand, my tone filled with urgency and unease.
brother Zhou sneered dismissively, flicking the ash from his cigarette as he said leisurely, "Why are you in such a hurry, Xiao Man? Lingling is currently the company's rising star; what could I possibly do to her?"
" brother Zhou, don't try to mislead me," I fixed my gaze on brother Zhou's eyes. "Is something wrong with Lingling?"
brother Zhou's eyes flickered for a moment before he feigned calmness: "What could possibly be wrong? Xiao Man, are you being overly suspicious? Lingling is busy with her schedule and doesn't have time to answer your calls. If there's nothing urgent, why don't you just go home?"
"Busy with her schedule? Which schedule? Why didn't I receive any notification?" I pressed on with suspicion in my tone.
"Xiao Man, what do you mean by that? Are you questioning my ability to do my job?" brother Zhou's expression darkened as his tone became stern. "I'm her manager; I decide her schedule. Do I need to report everything to you?"
" brother Zhou, you..." I wanted to say more, but I was abruptly interrupted by brother Zhou.
"Enough, Xiao Man, don't forget your place. You're just a small model, how dare you question me?" brother Zhou said disdainfully, and after that, he ignored me and turned to get into the car.
" brother Zhou, if you don't clarify things today, I'm not leaving!" I rushed to the car door and spread my arms to block brother Zhou's way.
"You..." brother Zhou glared at me, a flicker of panic crossing his eyes.
"Where is Lingling?" My voice trembled, but I stood firm in front of the car door, showing no signs of backing down.
brother Zhou took a deep breath and lowered his voice, saying, "Xiao Man, don't push me. It's better for you not to know some things."
" brother Zhou, I know what you're afraid of," I looked directly into brother Zhou's eyes. "What have you done to Lingling?"
After a moment of silence, brother Zhou finally relented. He sighed wearily and said, "Fine, I'll tell you. Lingling is currently in the hospital."
"The hospital? What happened to Lingling? Why did she suddenly end up there?" I asked anxiously.
brother Zhou replied impatiently, "It's because she didn't eat properly; she had problems from dieting. She fainted suddenly while shooting an advertisement today and is now receiving treatment in the hospital."
"What did you say? Lingling fainted? How could this happen?" My heart sank as I recalled the information I had found about "Devil's Vine," a terrible premonition surged within me.
" brother Zhou, tell me honestly, is Lingling still taking those diet pills?" My voice trembled slightly, but I was afraid to hear the answer I dreaded most.
brother Zhou fell silent; his silence gave me the answer I feared.
