In the depths of the garden, beneath the Wisteria trellis, there was a dining table set with a white tablecloth. The flickering candlelight illuminated the exquisite tableware, and a faint floral scent mingled with the rich aroma of red wine in the air.
"You..." I gasped, covering my mouth in surprise, completely taken aback that he had prepared all this here.
Du Ming smiled slightly and pulled out a chair for me. "Do you like it?"
I nodded and sat down opposite him. The moonlight filtered through the gaps in the trellis, casting shadows on his face and making it appear even more profound.
The dinner was Western-style, something I rarely ate, but the taste was unexpectedly good. Du Ming seemed to notice my awkwardness and took the initiative to start a conversation. We chatted about light topics, such as my medical skills, his business ventures, and our preferences. It was then that I realized, aside from our identities and rumors, Du Ming was actually a witty and well-informed person.
After a few rounds of wine, I relaxed considerably and couldn't help but ask curiously, "How did you think of bringing me here?"
Du Ming set down his wine glass and looked at me intently. "Because I wanted to have a nice meal with you and chat, just like an ordinary couple."
I froze for a moment, my heart inexplicably racing. Ordinary couple...
"In the past, I was always busy with work and neglected you," Du Ming's voice was low and sincere. "Now I want to make up for it and give you the best."
His words were like a stone thrown into my calm heart lake, creating ripples of emotion. I couldn't meet his gaze directly; I lowered my head, using my drink to mask my fluster.
After dinner, we walked out of the pavilion and strolled along the garden path. The night sky was dotted with stars, shining like diamonds against the dark canvas above.
"Look, what constellation is that?" I pointed at the brightest stars in the sky.
Du Ming followed my finger's direction and smiled indulgently. "That's the Big Dipper."
"The Big Dipper..." I murmured, suddenly recalling what my grandfather used to say: if you find the Big Dipper, you can find your way home.
"What's wrong?" Du Ming noticed my unusual reaction and asked with concern.
I shook my head and pointed at another star in the sky. "What about that one? What star is that?"
"That's Polaris," he patiently explained to me. "It always points north; you can rely on it to find your way when you're lost."
"Polaris..." I looked up at that bright star, feeling an inexplicable surge of emotion. Du Ming was like this North Star, guiding me when I felt lost.
The next day, I received a call from Bai Wei. She excitedly said she had good news to share with me.
"What good news?" I asked with a smile, vaguely guessing what it might be.
"I signed you and your partner up for a couples' travel group! The destination is a super beautiful seaside town!" Bai Wei's voice was filled with joy. "How about that? Surprised?"
Holding my phone, my smile gradually widened. "You just love meddling."
"How can this be called meddling? This is adding bricks to your love!" Bai Wei argued passionately. "Don't worry; I've done a lot of research. This town has beautiful scenery and pleasant weather—perfect for couples to vacation together!"
Before I could refuse, Bai Wei hurriedly hung up the phone, saying she needed to help me prepare some travel supplies. I shook my head helplessly; it seemed there was no escaping this trip.
A few days later, Du Ming and I arrived at the seaside town as Bai Wei had arranged. As soon as I got off the plane, I was captivated by the scenery before me. The blue sea and sky, the shadows of palm trees, and the faint scent of sea salt in the air made me feel refreshed.
We checked into a beachfront resort hotel, where our room's balcony offered a view of the endless ocean. After changing into comfortable casual clothes, Du Ming and I held hands and strolled along the soft sand.
The sea breeze gently tousled my hair, and the waves crashed against the rocks, creating rhythmic sounds. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and savored this rare moment of tranquility and joy.
"Do you like it here?" Du Ming's voice came softly to my ear, carrying a hint of tenderness.
I opened my eyes, turned to look at him, and smiled as I nodded, "I do."
As the sun set in the west, golden sunlight spilled over the surface of the sea, shimmering beautifully. Du Ming and I sat side by side on the beach, watching the sunset slowly sink below the horizon, our hearts filled with peace and happiness. The town held a grand bonfire party every year, and we joined the revelers. We sang and danced along with the locals, laughter echoing across the beach. Du Ming wasn't very good at dancing; his clumsy moves made me laugh repeatedly. He shook his head helplessly but his eyes were full of affection. I took his hand and pulled him into this joyful celebration. In that moment, I felt an unprecedented sense of ease and happiness, as if all my worries had vanished.
At night on the beach, stars twinkled above in a tranquil and romantic atmosphere. Du Ming somehow found a guitar and sat on the sand, gently strumming its strings. The melodious tune floated in the sea breeze as if telling a touching story. When he finished playing, he looked up at me with gentle light in his eyes.
"Lingxi," he softly called my name, "this song is written for you."
I gazed at him in surprise; before I could respond, he began to sing. His deep and magnetic voice brought out the heartfelt lyrics vividly. I listened quietly as my heartstrings were plucked, tears blurring my vision without me realizing it.
On our last day of travel, we walked along the shore, gazing at the distant horizon with heavy hearts.
"Lingxi," Du Ming suddenly stopped walking, turned around, and looked at me deeply. "I..."
He hesitated, his eyes filled with complex emotions as if he were struggling with something. I watched him silently, waiting for him to continue.
"I..." He took a deep breath as if making an important decision. "I love you, Lingxi."
My heart skipped a beat; before I could process those words, he knelt down on one knee and pulled out an exquisite box from his pocket. When he opened it, there was a sparkling diamond ring inside.
"Will you marry me?" His voice was deep and firm, filled with anticipation.
Tears streamed down my face; this sudden happiness left me speechless. I covered my mouth and nodded vigorously but couldn't say a word. He joyfully placed the ring on my ring finger and then held me tightly in his arms.
As the sun set in the west, golden light enveloped us completely; happiness spread through the air. However, a faint sense of unease lingered in my heart—could this sweetness truly last? What would our future hold?
