I felt like a rag doll, plummeting rapidly through the air, with the howling wind and Du Ming's anxious shouts ringing in my ears.
With a loud "thud," Du Ming and I crashed heavily into a snowdrift. The snow cushioned some of the impact, but we were still left dazed and in excruciating pain.
I struggled to get up but found my limbs weak and immobile. A metallic sweetness surged in my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood that stained the pristine white snow.
"Lingxi!" Du Ming scrambled to my side, propping me up. His face was as pale as paper, with a trace of blood at the corner of his mouth. "Are you okay? Where are you hurt?"
"I'm fine..." I forced myself to endure the pain and shook my head, but my voice was weak, barely above a whisper.
Du Ming examined my injuries, his brow furrowed tightly. "Your leg is broken. I'll carry you; we need to find a place to heal."
The environment in Extreme Cold Land was worse than we had imagined. The blizzard raged on, and the temperature was terrifyingly low. Our thin clothes quickly became stiff from the cold. We supported each other as we trudged through the vast expanse of snow, searching for shelter from the wind.
"Lingxi, hold on; we'll find Nine Nether Cold Jade Grass soon," Du Ming's voice was hoarse yet filled with strength as he carried me forward, taking one careful step at a time.
I lay on Du Ming's back, feeling the warmth radiating from him, a surge of warmth filling my heart. I knew that everything we were doing was for the sake of saving the Cultivation World and its people, but more than that, I hoped we could survive this ordeal and face whatever future storms awaited us together.
"Du Ming..." I called softly, my voice weak yet resolute. "We will succeed, right?"
"Yes," Du Ming replied firmly. "We will definitely succeed."
We continued to struggle through the blizzard; every step was incredibly difficult, but we never gave up hope because we believed that as long as we persevered, we could overcome any obstacle.
Just when despair began to creep in, a familiar yet chilling voice echoed through the storm like a ghostly whisper in our ears.
"Hehe, how touching. It's just a pity that all of this is in vain."
I managed to lift my head with great effort and saw a figure clad in black robes and wearing a conical hat slowly approaching through the snowstorm. He emanated an overwhelming pressure that seemed capable of crushing everything beneath him.
It was the leader of that mysterious force! A wave of dread washed over me.
"It's you!" Du Ming recognized him too. He suddenly stood up, shielding me behind him, his eyes blazing with fury. "Who are you? Why are you doing this?"
The man in black laughed coldly and slowly removed his hat, revealing a handsome yet sinister face. A wicked smile curled at the corners of his mouth, his eyes filled with mockery and derision.
"I don't mind telling you; I am one of the four guardians under the Demon God. You can call me—Shadow."
Shadow! A chill ran down my spine at that name; I had seen it in ancient texts before—he was said to be the most capable assistant of the Demon God with unfathomable power.
"The Demon God... Could it be..." I couldn't believe my ears and trembled as I asked, "Is it true that the Demon God has really been resurrected?"
"Hehe, it seems you're not completely foolish," Shadow said with a cruel smile on his face. "That's right; the Demon Lord has been revived, and you will be his first sacrifice!"
"Impossible!" Du Ming roared angrily, gathering spiritual energy in his hand to attack Shadow, but Shadow effortlessly deflected it with ease.
"Don't overestimate yourselves." Ying Leng scoffed, a glimmer of murderous intent flashing in his eyes. "You think you can stop the Demon Lord? That's simply a delusion!"
Despair washed over me like a tidal wave. Were we really going to die here? Was the Cultivation World truly going to be destroyed?
No, I couldn't give up! Even if there was only a glimmer of hope, I had to fight with all my might! I took a deep breath, enduring the excruciating pain in my body, and said to Du Ming, "Du Ming, we can't give up. For the sake of the Cultivation World and all living beings, we must fight until the end!"
Hope reignited in Du Ming's eyes as he grasped my hand tightly and said resolutely, "Lingxi, you're right. We can't give up. Even if we die, we will die together!"
The Extreme Cold Land was too far from the core area ravaged by the Demon Lord. It took us seven days and nights of flying on our swords to return.
When we arrived back at the familiar Heavenly Transformation Sect, I could hardly believe my eyes. The once ethereal mountain gate, adorned with pavilions and towers, was now in ruins, scorched earth stretching as far as I could see. I rushed into the sect and was met with bodies lying in disarray, the air thick with the stench of blood and nauseating demonic energy.
"How could this happen... how could this happen..." I murmured to myself, tears blurring my vision.
Du Ming held my hand tightly, his face pale and silent.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed from afar, shaking the ground as if doomsday had arrived. We turned towards the sound and saw a massive black figure wreaking havoc on another mountain peak—that was... the direction of Kunlun Sect!
"We need to go!" Du Ming said without hesitation, pulling me towards Kunlun Sect.
Along the way, we witnessed more horrifying scenes; the once prosperous Cultivation World now resembled a hellish purgatory. I saw familiar companions torn apart by demonic creatures and heard their desperate screams; it felt as though my heart was being sliced open with a knife, unbearable pain coursing through me.
The situation at Kunlun Sect was no better; the protective formation was on the verge of collapse, and disciples fought valiantly but still couldn't fend off the frenzied attacks of the demons. That enormous black figure hovered in mid-air, exuding an aura of destruction that could annihilate everything.
"The Demon Lord..." I had never seen such overwhelming power; even at his peak, my master would likely struggle to contend with it.
"Lingxi, find a safe place to hide. Leave this to me," Du Ming said as he shielded me behind him, his gaze resolute.
"No, I want to fight alongside you!" I shook my head firmly and declared, "Even if we die, I want to die with you!"
Du Ming seemed about to say something else, but I had already summoned my Silver Needle and joined the battle. I knew that with my strength, I was insignificant before the Demon Lord, but I couldn't back down or let Du Ming face this alone.
We fought side by side with all our might; however, the Demon Lord's power far exceeded our imagination. Every attack we launched against him felt like a mayfly trying to shake a tree—utterly futile.
"Hahaha! Insects like you dare to be arrogant before me!" The Demon Lord laughed arrogantly, his eyes filled with disdain and mockery.
At that moment, Du Ming suddenly pushed me aside; in the next second, a stream of black demonic energy pierced through his chest...
