"Cousin, what are you doing here?" Du Ming exclaimed in surprise.
The visitor was Du Ming's distant cousin and the leader of a branch of the Du Family—Du Heng. He glanced at Mr. Du, who lay in a pool of blood, his brow furrowed and a flicker of sorrow in his eyes, quickly replaced by a sharp intensity. "Ming'er, this is not the time for reminiscing; we need to deal with these troubles first!"
The helpers brought by Du Heng swiftly took control of the situation, subduing all the black-clad men brought by Du Hai. I anxiously rushed to Mr. Du's side to check his injuries. Fortunately, although Du Hai's strike was fierce, it did not hit any vital areas; he was merely unconscious for the moment. I took out some healing ointment and energy-replenishing pills from my medical kit to treat his wounds.
"Lingxi, I leave my father in your care," Du Ming said worriedly as he glanced at me before standing up and walking over to Du Heng, whispering, "Cousin, why did you suddenly come?"
Du Heng looked around and lowered his voice. "I received news that Du Hai has colluded with a mysterious organization intending to harm you. I was worried you would be in danger, so I rushed over with my men."
"A mysterious organization?" I was startled by this revelation; could this be the hidden hand pulling the strings behind the scenes?
"Exactly," Du Heng nodded. "This organization is powerful and operates secretly; even we, the Du Family, do not dare provoke them lightly. Du Hai is determined to eliminate you all this time; we must find a way to respond quickly."
In the following days, we stayed hidden in the Du Family Old Residence, caring for the unconscious Mr. Du while discussing strategies. With Du Heng's help, we devised a detailed plan to expose the leader's true identity and bring him to justice.
On the day of implementation, we arrived at an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town as agreed. The place was eerie and terrifying, filled with rusted machinery and shattered glass, with a pungent moldy smell in the air as if a giant beast lay in wait for its prey in the darkness.
"Be careful; there must be an ambush here," I whispered as a warning.
No sooner had I spoken than a whistling sound pierced the air as countless hidden weapons shot toward us from all directions. Du Ming reacted quickly, pulling me behind him and wielding his sword to deflect the projectiles one by one.
"Kill!"
With a roar, dozens of black-clad men surged out from various corners of the factory, surrounding us completely. A fierce battle was inevitable.
I swiftly drew several Silver Needles from my waist, infused them with spiritual energy, and shot them at the nearest black-clad men. The Silver Needles accurately struck their acupoints, rendering them paralyzed and unable to move.
"Lingxi, watch out!" Du Ming's voice called from nearby. I turned to see two black-clad men sneaking up on me while Du Ming was entangled with several others and unable to break free.
Without thinking further, I dodged immediately while scattering a handful of medicinal powder from my sleeve. The powder dispersed quickly in the wind and filled the air. The black-clad men were caught off guard; after inhaling it, they became dizzy and their vision blurred.
Seizing the opportunity, I rushed to Du Heng's side to stop his bleeding and treat his wounds. His left arm had been slashed by a black-clad man, blood staining his sleeve red. "Lingxi, don't worry about me; go help Ming'er!"
"Cousin, don't worry! I won't let them harm you!" I replied firmly after briefly treating his wound before joining the fray again.
Du Ming moved gracefully with fierce swordplay; every strike was lethal, preventing the black-clad men from getting close. However, I knew that this approach wouldn't last long; they were numerous and eventually we would tire out.
I needed to find a way to break this deadlock!
Looking around, I noticed many weapons dropped by the black-clad men scattered on the ground, including some hidden weapons and poisons. An idea struck me; while dodging their attacks, I gathered what I could from the ground into my possession.
"Ming'er, catch!" I threw several packets of powder toward Du Ming while shouting loudly, "These are Softening Powder and Mesmerizing Fragrance; use them wisely!"
Du Ming caught the packets and nodded in understanding with a confident smile on his face. He deliberately feigned an opening to lure the black-clad men closer before seizing their moment of distraction to throw the powder at them.
The men in black were caught off guard, falling victim to the effects of the Softening Powder, which left them weak, while the Mesmerizing Fragrance plunged them into hallucinations. In an instant, the previously orderly attack turned into chaos.
"What an opportunity!" Du Ming seized the moment, swinging his sword and knocking several men in black to the ground.
I was about to join Du Ming when I suddenly felt a tremor beneath my feet, followed by a wave of heat that engulfed me as everything around was consumed by roaring flames.
"What’s happening?" I exclaimed, startled by the sudden turn of events.
"Not good! It's a trap!" Du Ming's voice sounded particularly urgent amidst the sea of fire. "Lingxi, come to me quickly!"
It was then that I realized the once open area had been surrounded by flames without my noticing. The blazing fire roared like dragons, clawing at us as it advanced.
I gritted my teeth against the scorching heat and desperately ran toward Du Ming. However, the flames spread too quickly; I had barely taken a few steps before thick smoke choked me, making it hard to breathe.
"Cough cough... Ming'er..." I called out weakly, my vision blurring and my body gradually losing strength.
"Lingxi!" Du Ming's anxious voice rang in my ears, and in the next moment, I fell into a warm embrace.
Du Ming held me tightly, shielding me from the searing flames with his body. A large portion of his clothing had already burned away, revealing skin marked with burns, yet he seemed oblivious to the pain as he clung to me, repeatedly calling my name.
"Don't be afraid, Lingxi. I won't let anything happen to you!"
His voice was firm and powerful, like a warm current flowing into my heart, allowing me to see a glimmer of hope amidst despair.
"Ming'er, are we... going to burn to death here?" I clutched his clothing tightly, my voice trembling as I asked.
"No! Trust me!" Du Ming leaned down and kissed my forehead, his gaze resolute. "I will get you out!"
Just then, a deafening battle cry erupted from beyond the flames, followed by a group of figures breaking through the fiery barrier and rushing toward us with all their might.
"It's Father! Father is here!" Du Ming exclaimed joyfully, his voice filled with hope.
I struggled to open my eyes and saw Mr. Du leading a group of people who were bravely approaching us through the raging fire. They carried buckets of water and worked hard to extinguish the surrounding flames, creating a path for our escape.
"Ming'er! Lingxi!" Mr. Du shouted anxiously upon seeing us. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
"Father, we're fine!" Du Ming responded loudly before holding me close and following Mr. Du and the others out of the inferno.
...
I lay weakly on the bed as I heard Mr. Du and Du Ming talking anxiously nearby.
"Ming'er, what on earth happened? Who wanted to put you in danger?"
"Father, it's a long story..."
I struggled to rise from my weary body, but felt a wave of soreness and weakness wash over me.
“Lingxi, you’re awake?” Du Ming noticed my movement and quickly came to the bedside, looking at me with concern. “How do you feel? Is there anywhere that hurts?”
I shook my head, signaling that I was fine.
“Lingxi, you need to rest. I will get to the bottom of this and give you an explanation,” Mr. Du said in a deep voice, his tone filled with anger and a hint of menace.
I watched the backs of Mr. Du and Du Ming as they left, my heart filled with confusion and unease. Who was behind this sudden fire? Were they targeting Du Ming, me, or perhaps… both of us?
