"My true identity is..." Before he could finish his sentence, the phone rang abruptly. It was Du Ming's phone, and the screen flashed the word "Father." Du Ming's expression instantly darkened, and he took a deep breath before answering the call.
"Hello, Father."
"Unfilial son! You still know how to answer my call!" The furious roar of Mr. Du came from the other end of the line. "I command you to come back immediately! Otherwise, you will never set foot in the Du Family's door again!"
Du Ming's fingers turned white as he gripped the phone, but his tone remained unusually calm. "Father, I have already said that my marriage is my own decision. Please do not interfere any further."
"Impudent!" Mr. Du was livid. "Are you trying to ruin our family's reputation by marrying a woman of unknown origins?! I tell you, as long as I am alive, I will never allow such a thing to happen!"
"Unknown origins?" Hearing Mr. Du's words ignited a surge of anger within me. I was about to retort when Du Ming pulled me back.
"Father, Lingxi is my wife; please show some respect." Du Ming's voice was as cold as ice. "I will make it clear today: regardless of your agreement, my marriage with Lingxi is already settled and cannot be changed."
With that, Du Ming hung up the phone without giving Mr. Du a chance to respond.
"Du Ming..." I looked at him with concern. "Are you okay?"
Du Ming shook his head, putting his phone in his pocket. He turned to me, a hint of helplessness and guilt in his eyes. "Lingxi, I'm sorry for dragging you into this conflict."
"I'm not afraid." I held his hand firmly and said resolutely, "As long as we are together, we can overcome any difficulties."
Du Ming grasped my hand back, his eyes filled with emotion and tenderness. However, neither of us anticipated that an even greater crisis was quietly approaching...
The next morning, the headlines of major media outlets were dominated by the same explosive news:
"Shock! Wealthy heir Du Ming marries mysterious woman in a flash marriage, suspected family alliance!"
The accompanying photo showed us entering the civil affairs bureau; although it was somewhat blurry, our faces were still clearly visible.
As soon as the news broke, public opinion erupted...
Endless discussions and speculations flooded in like a tidal wave, most questioning my identity and speculating whether the Du Family was forming an alliance through marriage. My previously peaceful life was completely disrupted; everywhere I went, people pointed and whispered about me.
Du Ming remained much calmer than I had expected. He immediately contacted the public relations team to manage the situation, but the effect was minimal. Worse still, the Du Family's stocks were affected and began to plummet.
"Don't worry; I will handle this," Du Ming said firmly as he held my hand. But I knew that he was under more pressure than anyone else.
To avoid drawing attention, I tried to minimize going out. However, the more I wanted to hide away, the more trouble seemed to find me.
One day, while Du Ming was at work, I planned to go to the supermarket to buy some daily necessities. Just as I reached the entrance of our community, a black sedan suddenly rushed out and stopped right in front of me.
Before I could react, the car door opened and two burly men in black suits stepped out aggressively. Without saying a word, they grabbed me and started dragging me towards their car.
"Who are you? What do you want! Let me go!" I struggled desperately, but my strength was no match for them, and I could only watch helplessly as I was shoved into the car.
The black sedan shot out like an arrow, and I was tied up in the back seat, fear and helplessness wrapping around me like vines.
"Who are you? Why are you capturing me?" I forced myself to calm down, trying to negotiate with them.
However, no matter how many times I asked, they remained silent, coldly staring at me with fierce glints in their eyes.
Just when I was about to despair, my phone suddenly rang. With my hands bound, I couldn't answer it.
One of the men in black snatched my phone away, glanced at the screen, and his expression immediately darkened.
"Boss, it's... it's Master Du..."
On the other end of the line, Du Ming's anxious voice came through: "Lingxi, where are you? What happened?!"
Before I could respond, the man in black hung up the phone.
The black sedan stopped at an abandoned factory, and they roughly pushed me out of the car, causing me to fall to the ground.
"What do you want?!" I asked in terror.
"Someone wants your life!" one of the men in black sneered.
As soon as he finished speaking, a familiar figure suddenly appeared at the factory entrance, and my heart leaped into my throat.
"Du Ming! Run! They want to kill me!" I shouted hoarsely.
Du Ming's face turned pale as he coldly scanned the group of men in black before finally landing his gaze on me.
"Lingxi, don't be afraid. I'm here to save you!"
Before he finished speaking, he charged forward with lightning speed, engaging in a fierce fight with the group of men in black.
I was bound in place, helplessly watching them fight with my heart in my throat.
In the end, Du Ming defeated the group of men in black with overwhelming force and rescued me.
"Lingxi, are you okay?" he asked anxiously as he checked my body, worry etched on his face.
"I'm fine..." I shook my head, still shaken.
"Who is trying to capture you?"
Before I could answer, Du Ming's phone suddenly rang.
He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression instantly turned grim.
"I understand," he said, hanging up the phone, a glint of cold light flashing in his eyes. "Lingxi, something has happened at the company; someone has leaked our trade secrets."
Du Ming took a deep breath, his expression serious as he said to me, "Lingxi, the situation is very complicated right now. I must take you to a safe place."
My heart tightened, and I instinctively grabbed his hand. "Where are you taking me? I won't go!"
"Listen, Lingxi, it's too dangerous outside. I can't let you take any risks," he insisted, trying to pry my hand away with an undeniable firmness in his tone.
"I won't! I'm not afraid of danger; I want to be with you!" I stubbornly shook my head, looking at him with determination. "Du Ming, I know you're worried about me, but I'm your wife, not a canary. I can't hide behind you; I want to face this together!"
He fell silent, complex emotions swirling in his deep-set eyes. I knew he was concerned for my safety, but I also wanted him to understand that I wasn't a fragile vase needing protection; I had the ability to stand by his side in battle.
"Lingxi..."
"Don't say anything; I've made up my mind," I interrupted him firmly. "I believe we can overcome all difficulties together."
He looked at me deeply and finally nodded. "Alright, we'll face it together."
To keep him from being distracted, I decided to help him in my own way. Using my medical skills, I treated employees in the company who had fallen ill due to overwork. Gradually, my medical expertise and kindness won the recognition and trust of the staff. They no longer pointed fingers at me; instead, they began to care about my safety and even offered to help me.
However, just when we thought things were getting better, a greater crisis quietly approached.
A series of negative news about me suddenly appeared online, claiming that I was a scheming woman who climbed the ranks through beauty and that I was a victim of the Du family's marriage arrangement. Some even fabricated lies about there being no feelings between Du Ming and me.
These news articles spread like a virus across the internet; my Weibo comment section was flooded with various obscene insults and curses.
I felt dizzy all of a sudden, darkness clouding my vision. How could this happen? Who was manipulating all of this behind the scenes?
Du Ming caught me as I swayed, his face pale with fury burning in his eyes. "Don't be afraid, Lingxi; I'll get to the bottom of this and won't let those who spread rumors get away with it!"
