Ren Chang and the others haven't returned yet. During their time in Mist City, Ren Chang often wandered around with a few loose cultivators, spending time at various Fairy Markets to pick out items, returning late at night. Xu Feng was focused on his cultivation and didn't interact much with them.
Xu Feng had intended to buy a set of high-quality defensive armor, but this time he had already spent quite a bit. If he were to bid on high-quality armor again, it would inevitably draw attention.
Calculating the time, he realized he needed to go to Zhou Ba's place to pick up the bow in a little over ten minutes. Xu Feng had completed the main task of this trip to Mist City and planned to greet Ren Chang later. Ming Yi had already returned to Xian City, where he was cultivating while waiting for Zhou Ba.
Night fell quickly. Perhaps because two tigers cannot coexist in one mountain, the fog dissipated significantly as darkness arrived, though the dew collected on the leaves reminded him that the fog was still present.
From afternoon until evening, Xu Feng had been studying formations and the Water Element Technique from Qin Garden. He had only read through both sets of Cultivation Methods without actually practicing them.
The Water Element Technique from Qin Garden was called Weak Water Three Thousand, which also had six levels and eight combat techniques. It was somewhat similar to the “Flat Blade” series of Five Elements Techniques.
Regarding formations, Xu Feng had some prior experience, which made learning much faster. Additionally, this formation technique was merely a Human Level Cultivation Method, serving as an introductory guide to formations. In less than two hours, he grasped its essence. Combining this with the “Pillar of Stone” formation he had just purchased, Xu Feng's understanding of formations reached a new level.
The night grew deep, and sounds came from the adjacent room as Ren Chang and the others returned to the inn. After about an hour with no further noise, Xu Feng distinctly felt that Ren Chang's door suddenly opened.
Cultivators have their own ranges of spiritual awareness; even without using their eyes, they can sense changes in spiritual energy in the air, almost like a radar that allows them to determine the shapes and movements of objects.
It seemed that Ren Chang had noticed something unusual. He hurriedly left his room and paused briefly at Xu Feng's door before quickly departing.
“What is he up to at this hour?” Xu Feng thought as he waited for Ren Chang to move away. He locked onto his aura with his spiritual awareness and quietly followed him out.
After exiting the inn, Ren Chang walked along the street, stopping frequently as if afraid of being followed. Only after confirming no one was tailing him did he quicken his pace towards the east gate of the city, heading toward the river.
With his strong mental power and relatively powerful spiritual awareness, Xu Feng remained undetected by Ren Chang, much like how a Foundation Establishment Stage cultivator would not notice a Golden Core Cultivator; his own spiritual awareness was overshadowed by that of his opponent.
The river twisted and turned, with boats following suit. A figure stood at the bow of one boat—none other than “Four Hundred Ten Thousand.”
“Zhou Hai, my friend, I have brought him here; our matter is settled,” said Ren Chang, looking at “Four Hundred Ten Thousand.”
Zhou Hai nodded in satisfaction and said, "Friend Ren, you are being too polite. In fact, I still owe you a favor, and it would be remiss of me not to repay it." As he spoke, two flashes of blades emerged from the night mist, sweeping towards Ren Chang from above and below.
Ren Chang's face changed dramatically; he had no time to draw his sword and quickly dodged to the side. The two blade strikes were swift and powerful, matching Ren Chang's own strength. Coupled with the surprise attack, Ren Chang had no chance to retaliate. With a scream, he fell to the ground, his abdomen sliced open, his sword barely drawn halfway.
"You, you..." Ren Chang suddenly seemed to remember something and shouted frantically towards Xu Feng: "Run, hurry—" His voice only reached halfway before he let out a gurgling sound as blood sprayed from his throat. A blade had severed his windpipe.
Xu Feng cursed inwardly, realizing it was too late. Two figures had appeared behind him without warning, their dual blades glinting ominously and blocking his escape. The two who had killed Ren Chang quickly closed in, trapping Xu Feng in the middle.
Zhang Hai moved on the boat, stepping onto the misty River Surface and walking towards the Shore, smiling as he looked at Xu Feng.
"Show-off!" Xu Feng spat coldly.
"What?" Zhou Hai, not understanding Xu Feng's new term, chuckled lightly and asked, "Are you begging me?"
"Yes," Xu Feng replied sincerely, following along with his words. "Show-off is a term from my hometown; it means I ask you to let me go. We have no enmity, right?"
Zhou Hai responded, "We have no enmity, that's true, but there is a grievance. You stole my set of Cultivation Method."
"Oh," Xu Feng realized who this person was and asked, "How did you know it was me?"
"The commotion at the Auction House couldn't escape my notice, and I'm not the only one looking for you." He glanced at the four people beside him, all of whom laughed disdainfully.
In the eyes of these five individuals, Xu Feng, an outsider at only the Foundation Establishment Stage, warranted five of them to deal with him—quite an overreaction.
"How about this: let's negotiate again. I'll give you four books if you pay me two hundred thousand," Xu Feng began offering discounts to Zhou Hai, preparing for a promotional deal.
The five were momentarily taken aback by Xu Feng's business-like tone; was he out of his mind? At such a time when he should be thinking about escaping, he was still trying to negotiate? Did he have some hidden card? The five looked around; the mist swirled around them, and aside from themselves, there wasn't even a ghostly shadow in sight.
"Master, you finally came," Xu Feng suddenly called out to a tree not far away.
Five pairs of eyes stared motionlessly at Xu Feng, waiting for his next line.
"Ah, sorry, just making a joke," Xu Feng said, feeling a bit embarrassed when the five didn't fall for it. Sigh, this trick was too old-fashioned; even people from ancient times would know.
"You asked Ren Chang to lure me out just for that set of Cultivation Method, right? You saw it; I only got a Water Element one in the end. Could it be that you also practice Water Element? Do you want it? If you wanted it, you should have said so earlier. How would I know you wanted it? If you wanted it, I definitely wouldn't compete with you for it; I'd let you have it. But if you don't want it and I take it now, then you'll want it, and if you take it, then I won't have any left. I think you'd better not want it," Xu Feng teased.
"Clang!" A cultivator's sword fell to the ground as he stared blankly at his equally dazed companions. Zhou Hai was also left speechless.
"This is the moment!" Xu Feng's sword flashed with light. "Moving Emotion!" The sword transformed into a circle of Ethereal Light and struck like thunder at the four surrounding them. The cultivator who had dropped his sword hadn't come to his senses before Xu Feng swept his sword across, exposing his intestines.
"Fire Dragon in the Field! Fire Dragon Kiss!"
"Fire Dragon Shock!"
"Fire Dragon Charge!"
After four strikes, the four swordsmen lay dead on the ground.
Zhou Hai's expression changed as he said, "Good sword." His demeanor shifted as a powerful aura was released; he was actually at the Foundation Establishment Late Stage!
"You're not that impressive," Xu Feng replied coldly. The four swordsmen were using high-grade magical weapons and were all at the Foundation Establishment Mid-Stage. It wasn't surprising that Xu Feng could kill one with all his strength.
"I didn't expect someone at the Foundation Establishment Stage to have such power; it's truly rare. However, today you are destined to die," Zhou Hai declared as he drew his sword, revealing a mid-grade spirit weapon!
"Try killing me first," Xu Feng said as he swung his sword and charged forward; he had been holding back against this show-off for too long.
Zhou Hai recognized that the dialect spoken was not complimentary, and he felt a surge of anger. He swiftly drew his long sword, launching an attack.
"Earth King Armor!" A faint yellow aura enveloped Xu Feng's entire body, and his sword glowed with the same yellow light. Zhou Hai was taken aback, but he did not change his sword technique; he thrust forward, only to find that his blade pierced through Xu Feng's body without any resistance.
Before he could feel pleased about this, Xu Feng's "Moving Emotion" sword struck back powerfully, slicing through Zhou Hai's abdomen. In the next moment, Zhou Hai clearly saw his dark red liver—so fresh and vibrant, enough to prepare several bowls of fresh liver noodles.
"You... you are clearly a Fire Element One Star. Why, why..." Zhou Hai shouted out the question that Li Chang had failed to voice.
Xu Feng did not respond; Zhou Hai's sword had already pierced through his waist.
Xu Feng had overestimated his defensive capabilities. From Zhou Hai's aura, he discerned that he practiced Water Element Technique. Xu Feng decisively unleashed a lethal strike using the opposing Earth Element, and indeed it hit its mark—Zhou Hai was dead. However, Xu Feng's Earth King Armor, combined with the Low-Grade Spirit Tool Golden Silk Armor and his formidable Five Elements Body, could not completely block the force of Zhou Hai's weakened strike.
Plans often go awry; if only he had a strong bow in hand, he wouldn't have to take such risks. Now that Sad Bow could no longer pose a threat to Foundation Establishment Period Cultivators, Jin Liaoyuan's Superior Spirit Sword was not to be used unless absolutely necessary. He could also summon Wings of the Strange Dragon to escape but felt reluctant to do so. For the first time, Xu Feng doubted his own offensive power.
He collected Zhou Hai's Medium-Grade Spirit Sword and storage bag, swallowed a Sixth-Rank Vitality Pill despite the pain, and leaped onto Zhou Hai's boat moored at the River Surface. He cut the mooring rope and let the boat drift downstream with the current.
