Lu Dishi waved his hand backward, and the disciples understood, retreating ten zhang away.
"Beast," Lu Dishi shouted as he walked thirty meters to the cave entrance, "come out and let me see what progress you've made over the years."
Royal Sparrow signaled Xu Feng to enter the cave. Its bell-like eyes slowly focused, a heavy killing intent spreading out, and an overwhelming pressure far surpassing that of the White-Backed Giant Ape made Xu Feng involuntarily step back.
Lu Dishi also sensed the strong aura in the air, his expression slightly changing as he thought, "Could it be that the information was wrong? Has it already advanced?"
The branches at the cave entrance parted, and the Royal Sparrow, glowing with golden light, emerged from the cave. Its wings slightly spread made its over two-meter tall figure appear even more majestic, and its one-foot-long golden beak shone with a fierce light akin to that in its eyes.
"Good, very good," Lu Dishi gritted his teeth and said. "In that battle years ago, thirteen swords were embedded in your body. I never expected you to survive and advance to a Sixth-Level Monster. Truly worthy of being Jin Liaoyuan's mount."
A Sixth-Level Monster corresponds to the human realm of Golden Core Stage. In battles between humans and beasts of equal level, unless equipped with high-level weapons and defenses, survival is quite difficult.
The Royal Sparrow seemed to have recognized this human long ago. Its neck feathers stood on end, and its iron-like wings created a thunderous sound as they swept out like lightning.
Lu Dishi's eyes narrowed as he drew a circle of light in front of him.
"Thousand-Mile Wave!" Lu Dishi struck out with his palm. He had broken through to the Golden Core Stage a century ago, and now his power had greatly increased, hinting at an impending advancement to Golden Core Mid-Stage. Knowing well that the beast's physical strength was formidable, he still felt compelled to give it a try.
With a loud bang, Lu Dishi was sent flying, leaving behind a trail of blood.
"No, it can't be." Struck by a wing, Lu Dishi couldn't comprehend how this former Fifth-Grade Monster, on the verge of death from severe injuries, had advanced to such a powerful state.
Lu Dishi reached out in vain, grasping a long black whip.
"Medium-grade spirit tool!" The disciples gasped in shock. It turned out that Seventh Elder was using a medium-grade spirit tool! Everyone knew that the elders of the Sect possessed formidable spirit tools but had never seen one before. If it weren't for the exceptional strength of this Royal Sparrow, they might never have had the chance to witness a Superior Spirit Tool.
In their sect, Foundation Disciples typically used upper-middle grade artifacts; only those with exceptional talent would receive cultivation support from the Sect, granting them a Low-Grade Spirit Tool. Some fortunate cultivators might even obtain medium-grade spirit tools.
For instance, Cai Shujun, ranked first among the younger disciples of New Moon Sect, was personally gifted a Low-Grade Spirit Sword by Elder Qiu Wuling, though she had yet to use it.
The crafting of spirit tools is extremely difficult and consumes vast resources; ordinary sects cannot possibly possess them. Even large powers like New Moon Sect only have about twenty spirit tools.
Spirit tools reach a realm where they merge with flesh and can freely enter and exit the body, integrating into one's bloodline. If one nurtures their sword with their life for an extended period, it can become their life spirit tool, wielded at will. However, once it becomes a life spirit tool, it becomes linked to one's life; if the spirit tool is damaged, one will also suffer some degree of harm.
With a whip in hand, Lu Dishi's momentum surged. The shadow of the whip flashed, creating a rolling brilliance as it swept towards Royal Sparrow.
Royal Sparrow seemed to have anticipated such an aggressive attack. It swiftly dodged backward, avoiding the sharp edge, and with a flap of its wings, it shot upward like lightning.
Then, the disciples witnessed a scene they would never forget for the rest of their lives.
Royal Sparrow soared into the sky, opening its mouth to unleash a ball of orange-red flames. The flames spread rapidly, enveloping Lu Dishi completely. Lu Dishi swung his long whip, continuously dispersing the flames. Royal Sparrow kept spewing fire; the flames were incredibly hot, igniting Lu Dishi upon contact.
“Seventh Elder!” The disciples drew their swords in unison, wanting to rescue Lu Dishi.
“Get out of here quickly and ask the Grand Elder to come out!” Lu Dishi shouted while wielding his whip. His confidence was shattered by the flames; he knew this was not the time to act tough. The strength of this Royal Sparrow far exceeded his ability to handle.
At the same time, he understood that today might very well be his day of sacrifice.
Jiang Quan bowed to Lu Dishi and said, “Seventh Elder, take care.”
A few others followed suit and quickly turned to flee. The battle between experts at the Golden Core Stage was beyond their reach as Foundation Disciples; even a gust of wind from their clash could lead to death or serious injury. Staying behind would only result in more corpses.
Moreover, with Royal Sparrow unleashing its flames, Lu Dishi could hardly protect himself. Seeing that the situation was dire, the disciples had no choice but to prioritize their escape.
Royal Sparrow did not pursue them but fixed its gaze on Lu Dishi; the actions of the other disciples seemed irrelevant to it.
The core mission of Seventh Elder's trip to Beast Wasteland was to locate Royal Sparrow. If he could fight, he would; if not, he would retreat. He hadn't expected to encounter members of Guiyi Sect with the same objective along the way, nor had he anticipated that Royal Sparrow's strength was far beyond what had been reported internally as a "Level Five Injured Beast." Otherwise, Sect wouldn't have sent him alone.
Even after the disciples vanished, Royal Sparrow remained still. It ceased spewing fire; Lu Dishi, charred and battered, still maintained a standing posture but had lost all ability to fight back. His mid-grade spiritual whip had lost its spiritual essence in the flames and was no different from an ordinary whip.
“Come on, kill me! Avenge your master, you beast,” Lu Dishi shouted in despair as he realized escape was futile. “Jin Liaoyuan is dead! How dare you still live? Why don’t you go die? Do you still want to harm others like your master?”
Royal Sparrow looked up as if reminiscing about a story fading into the distance.
“You're afraid to kill me, aren't you? You know Qiu Wuling is from New Moon Sect; you're scared of her, right?” Lu Dishi continued cursing while retreating. “Even if Qiu Wuling doesn't like me, I am still from New Moon Sect! I’ve bled for her father! You wouldn’t dare kill me; you know how powerful Qiu Wuling is now? Even your master Jin Liaoyuan might not be able to defeat her…”
A golden claw pierced through Lu Dishi's mouth, silencing him completely. Then it closed around him, and his entire head exploded like a watermelon.
Lu Dishi died on the spot, and tranquility returned to the forest once more.
Xu Feng felt a pang of sorrow upon witnessing the tragic death of the Seventh Elder. Although he had no strong ties to the New Moon Sect, he bore no deep animosity towards the Seventh Elder either. Seeing him die here stirred something within him.
From the conversation of the Seventh Elder, Xu Feng vaguely picked up on some information. Many years ago, the New Moon Sect had besieged a person named Jin Liaoyuan, injuring his mount, which was the Royal Sparrow. It seemed that the Grand Elder Qiu Wuling was somehow connected to this incident.
So why did this Royal Sparrow seek me out? Even without the two talents from Mistaken Sword Hall, there are so many highly gifted disciples in Qianlong Hall; it shouldn't fall to me, a low-level disciple at Qi Refining Third Layer.
Ignoring Lu Dishi's corpse, the Royal Sparrow returned to the cave, directly grabbed Xu Feng, and flew out. It navigated through the forest without flying above the treetops. The woods grew denser and the trees taller. After flying for a while, the Royal Sparrow landed on an ancient tree that stood over a hundred meters high.
The tree was entwined with vines bearing red fruits. The Royal Sparrow pecked at a few and ate them. Xu Feng also took one without hesitation and ate it. This type of fruit was recorded in True Alchemy Explanation; it was called Chiyang Fruit and was a top-grade material for Pill of Spirit-Resolving Grain. One fruit combined with other herbs could produce over a hundred Pills of Hunger Suppression.
In such a perilous place as Beast Wasteland, ordinary people could not reach it at all. Even if cultivators entered, they mostly stayed on the outskirts. This Chiyang Fruit grew in seclusion; if not for the Royal Sparrow's arrival, Xu Feng would have run himself ragged without finding this place. There were over ten more fruits on the vine, so Xu Feng decided to pick them all and store them in his storage bag.
After eating a Chiyang Fruit, Xu Feng felt revitalized. The Royal Sparrow had just experienced a Great War and showed signs of fatigue, quietly resting on the tree until it was completely dark before opening its eyes again.
The eyes of Ancient Dou glowed with a strong green light at night. The Royal Sparrow once more grasped Xu Feng and soared into the night sky.
