Xu Feng ran wildly, the Superior Battle Boots acting like an accelerator, doubling his speed as he retraced his steps, familiar trees and rocks flying past him.
He didn't know how long he had been fleeing until the violent shouts behind him faded away, leaving him surrounded by a somewhat lifeless silence. Xu Feng stopped, only to realize something that left him speechless: he was lost.
Xu Feng had thought he was escaping along the same path, but in his panic, he hadn't taken a good look around. It was only now that he noticed those trees he thought he recognized were not the same ones. Although the trees in the Beast Wasteland varied in shape, they were surprisingly consistent in arrangement; at every turn, he saw the same few leading trees.
The trees towered high, allowing sunlight to filter through the gaps in the leaves and reach the ground, which obscured his sense of direction. After weaving through the forest without leaving any markers, it would have been strange if he hadn’t gotten lost. Fortunately, he could still tell from the occasional appearances of Second-Level Monsters that there were no high-level beasts around, indicating he hadn’t ventured deeper into the wilderness.
The attack power of Second-Level Monsters was equivalent to that of a Qi Refining Third Layer cultivator, posing no threat to Xu Feng at this point. Those Second-Level Monsters with a sixth sense also dared not approach him.
After resting for a while, the light began to dim as the dense forest cast deeper shadows on the ground. One of the first lessons in wilderness survival was taught during their training at the Sect before departure. With storage bags and extraordinary combat abilities, survival in the wild was no longer as perilous as it was for ordinary people.
Xu Feng leaped to the treetops, enjoying the last rays of sunlight. This tree stood about seven or eight meters tall with thick foliage; barring any unforeseen circumstances, this would be where Xu Feng would rest for the night.
Across from him, on a similarly tall tree branch, two men in white robes were coldly smiling at Xu Feng. "I didn't expect you to still be alive; you ran faster than a rabbit. We almost caught up with you—what a surprise," one of them sneered.
Xu Feng's eyes narrowed. For a mere Qi Refining Third Layer disciple, was it really necessary to deploy so many people against him?
The newcomers were two members from his group in Cold Moon Hall—Cheng Dafu and Cheng Dagui—brothers who ranked above average in strength within Cold Moon Hall. They were inseparable and known as the Cold Moon Twin Stars.
Xu Feng focused intently and calmly asked, "Where are the other two?"
"Still more?" Cheng Dagui replied in surprise. "Are we not enough? Do you think you can survive until tomorrow?" Cheng Dafu chuckled beside him.
"Even if I die, I want to die understanding why," Xu Feng said with a look of frustration.
Seeing that Xu Feng had seemingly surrendered, Cheng Dafu decided to play the good cop. "Actually, you have no enmity with us; we’re just doing our jobs. I won’t make things difficult for you—if you hand over something valuable, I’ll make your death quicker." He wore a sincere expression as if performing an act of great kindness.
"So many people want me dead, and you two are going to take all the credit?" Xu Feng casually sat down on the branch.
"You are just a character; killing you is merely an added task," Cheng Dafu said with a dismissive expression. "Our target is not you."
"Big Brother," Cheng Dagui, who was a bit more cunning, replied, "You have overstepped."
Xu Feng stood up and straightened his clothes. "Alright, let's get going then."
"Pay first, then I'll send you on your way," Cheng Dafu reminded him. "I don't want to be rummaging through your corpse; it's very dirty."
"Oh, you might be mistaken," Xu Feng's expression changed. "It's not me who's going on the road; it's you!"
Sad Arrow had already shot through the air, two arrows splitting to attack both men.
Cheng Dafu had a toothpick in his mouth and didn't have time to spit it out as he fell backward. The arrow grazed his forehead, taking away a large chunk of flesh and hair.
Cheng Dagui also didn't expect Xu Feng to use a bow and arrow, and the speed of the arrows was astonishing. The two were less than fifteen meters apart when the arrow light flashed before them, aiming straight for their throats. Cheng Dagui, having ample combat experience, managed to tilt his head just in time as the arrow pierced through the flesh of his left neck and flew into the forest behind him.
Injuring two people right off the bat did not surprise Xu Feng; one reason was that his opponents were careless, and another was that Jinxi's three-layer Arrow Force through Arrow Meridian was already enough to pose a threat to experts at the tenth layer.
Cold Moon Twin Stars disregarded the pain and charged forward with her sword. However, halfway through her leap, she found Xu Feng already on another tree. At the same time, three arrows shot towards Cheng Dafu.
Cheng Dafu swung his long sword and deflected all three arrows but was still knocked back three meters, his chest heaving. The strength and speed of a tenth-layer expert were indeed formidable.
"Take this!" Cheng Dagui acted quickly, unleashing a Martial Talisman. "Explode!"
With a loud bang, Xu Feng was blown away. As Cheng Dagui raised his hand, Xu Feng was already retreating while simultaneously shooting an arrow that hit the incoming Martial Talisman. However, being in the tree caused uneven force, reducing the speed of his Superior Battle Boots. When the Arrow Symbol connected, it was less than two meters from Xu Feng.
Xu Feng fell from the tree like a bird shot down, flailing as he tried to stabilize himself and finally managed to regain his balance ten meters above the ground. From the tree above, a bloodied Cheng Dafu leaped down.
Xu Feng was severely injured, his chest charred and a tremendous pain radiating from his torso. Blood had already trickled to the corner of his mouth. Gritting his teeth, he rolled over and leaped down from the tree. Once his feet hit the ground, he quickly regained some speed, but his injuries still hindered him.
Cheng Dafu, furious, maneuvered around several branches and jumped down, having been struck on the head by a low-level disciple of Qi Refining Third Layer. He was so enraged that he wished he could cleave Xu Feng in half with a single sword strike.
However, this time he was too hasty and failed to consider how powerful the previous arrows had been.
Xu Feng relished shooting at targets like this—caught in a situation with no escape routes.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Four arrows flew out, resulting in a scream from Cheng Dafu.
Three arrows were deflected, but the fourth pierced through his abdomen, carrying a piece of intestine as it lodged into a tree behind him. Cheng Dafu clutched his stomach and rolled on the ground in agony.
Seeing this, Cheng Dafu dared not jump down easily again and instead slid down the main trunk of the tree.
By the time Cheng Dafu reached the ground, his eyes bulged as he bit into the dirt. A long sword pierced through his chest, and unable to bear the immense pain, he took his own life at the last moment.
Xu Feng stopped twenty meters away and swallowed several Revitalizing Pills to temporarily alleviate his injuries. With bow in hand, he coldly watched Cheng Dafu's opponent.
Now facing Cheng Dafu alone, who was at Refining Qi Level Ten, Xu Feng felt significantly less pressure than before. If Cheng Dafu attempted to flee into the dense forest, Xu Feng would have no way to pursue him.
"Come on, your talismans can't hurt me," Xu Feng said as he patted his chest to indicate that he was fine.
"Then let me give you a few more to try," Cheng Dafu replied as he raised his hand and sent two more talismans flying toward Xu Feng. Anticipating this, Xu Feng shot down both talismans mid-flight. Fortunately, Cheng Dafu controlled the detonation timing; otherwise, he would have been caught in his own trap.
"Child's play," Cheng Dafu suddenly vanished behind a tree. His figure flickered as he quickly closed in on Xu Feng using the tree for cover. Once he got close enough, it would be difficult for Xu Feng to find another opportunity to shoot.
Xu Feng pushed off with both feet and soared into the air again. From above, Cheng Dafu's figure became visible once more. With a change in perspective, the battle began to tilt back in favor of Xu Feng.
Xu Feng ascended twenty meters, while Cheng Daguai remained on the ground. The two engaged in a game of hide and shoot. Xu Feng could see Cheng Daguai, but there were too many trees in the way. After shooting about ten arrows, all of them missed their target.
Cheng Daguai was drenched in cold sweat. Each of those arrows had narrowly missed him, and if they had been poisoned, he might have already succumbed to the effects. His confidence waned with each passing moment; losing to someone at the Qi Refining Third Layer would be unacceptable when he returned. He couldn't bear the shame of facing others, especially after Cheng Dafu's death. This person had to be eliminated.
Xu Feng ceased his attack and stood on a tree trunk as thick as a bowl, observing Cheng Daguai's movements.
Cheng Daguai dared not show himself, hiding behind the tree while contemplating how to launch a decisive strike. To kill him, he had to get close, but how could he do that? This Qi Refining Third Layer individual was incredibly fast, rivaling a Senior Disciple. The only hope rested on his injuries; that explosive talisman had already wounded him. Although he pretended to be fine, he couldn't escape Cheng Daguai's keen observation. He wouldn't be able to hold out much longer. When his injuries became critical, that would be his moment of demise.
Cheng Daguai smiled sinisterly, envisioning Xu Feng collapsing in pain from his injuries.
This was his final smile; he could have smiled more brightly but chose to wear a shadowy grin instead.
A black arrow silently pierced through the massive tree that stood between them and struck deep into his chest, piercing his heart.
Looking at the hole in the tree, disbelief filled Cheng Daguai's eyes. He longed to share this news with those who had sent him on this task, but he would never have that chance again.
