Heiya Mountain has five rooms for the stationed disciples. Cao Lei and Lei Pi each have one room, Xu Feng has one, and Jiang Bei shares two rooms with seven others.
That night, Cao Lei stayed in his room until midnight and then quietly slipped into Lei Pi's room.
“Senior Brother Lei, the Outer Sect has already spread the word that they will be taking four people away soon, but this time we need to 'clean up' five,” Cao Lei said coldly to Lei Pi, who was sitting cross-legged.
“I have already confirmed the candidates for extraction. As for Xu Feng,” Lei Pi said fiercely, “after tonight, there will be no such person.” He gently pushed open the window, revealing a dark and windy night outside.
“I'll go in and kill him. You keep watch outside. If anyone dares to come in and help, you kill them,” Lei Pi said. As a practitioner at the eighth level of Refining Qi, dealing with Xu Feng, who had just reached the Qi Refining Third Layer, would be easy for him. Cao Lei, being at the seventh level of Refining Qi, was considered the second strongest on Heiya Mountain. While he might not be able to handle eight opponents at once, delaying them for a few minutes would be enough for Lei Pi to finish his task.
The two checked their weapons, completing their final preparations before the kill.
“Who? Stop!” A shout from outside interrupted them; it was Jiang Bei.
Lei Pi and Cao Lei immediately jumped out of the window and saw Jiang Bei angrily pointing into the distance while the other seven rushed out from their rooms.
“What’s going on?” Cao Lei asked as he noticed that the eight were merely questioning and did not dare to pursue.
“Senior Brother Cao, just now there was a shadow lurking around the Refined Ore Area. It might be a wandering rogue trying to steal something,” Jiang Bei replied angrily. The few disciples behind him also shouted that they wanted to chase after and kill whoever it was.
Lei Pi glanced around but did not see any sign of Xu Feng. He exchanged glances with Cao Lei, who understood and shouted, “Daring to target our New Moon Sect? They clearly don’t take us seriously! Everyone follow me; I’ll skin him alive!”
Cao Lei led the eight disciples into the night with loud shouts.
Lei Pi approached Xu Feng’s door, which was tightly shut.
“Come out; the enemy has left. You don’t need to be afraid,” Lei Pi assumed that Xu Feng had been frightened by the commotion outside.
“The enemy hasn’t left,” the door creaked open, revealing a calm-looking Xu Feng, who stared back at Lei Pi. “I’m not afraid either.”
Lightning struck as Xu Feng remained calm and composed, his expression unchanged. He couldn't help but feel a sinking sensation in his heart as he said, "It seems I had to see you; you already know?"
"Know what? That you're going to kill me?" Xu Feng replied with a teasing smile, holding a heavy sword in his hand.
Lightning realized that his plans had been exposed but was not surprised. Drawing his sword, he said, "Knowing this and not running away only shows that you're not clever enough." He knew Xu Feng must have some backup, but it was too late to retreat; they had to fight.
Clang! Their swords clashed, and Xu Feng was forced back a step.
Lightning was astonished; Xu Feng had indeed concealed his strength. To be able to withstand a strike from him while at the Qi Refining Third Layer and only be pushed back one step was impressive. Xu Feng wasn't surprised; this was his full-strength attack, relying on sheer power. The double enhancement of Golden Element Power equated to the strength of someone at the Seventh Layer of Qi Refining, which made it reasonable that he fell slightly short against an Eighth Layer opponent.
"If that's all the strength you have, then I'll send you on your way," Lightning scoffed, and suddenly his sword radiated brilliant light as the power of his Eighth Layer cultivation surged forth.
Xu Feng dared not take it head-on; he unleashed the Azure Dragon Thirteen Swords to evade and strike at weaknesses, engaging Lightning in guerrilla warfare.
With an advantage in strength, Lightning pressed hard against Xu Feng, attacking fiercely while Xu Feng dodged and maneuvered with the mindset of "if I can't fight back, I can evade," engaging in tactical skirmishes.
Lightning grew increasingly frustrated as each time he aimed to land a hit, Xu Feng narrowly escaped. After exchanging twenty or thirty blows, Lightning felt something was off. With all this commotion, Cao Lei should have returned by now to check on the situation; why hadn’t he made any noise since leaving?
At this moment, Xu Feng was soaked through. He had achieved his goal of practicing swordplay and gained a clear understanding of his own strength. Noticing Lightning frequently glancing around, he knew what was on his mind. Xu Feng unleashed a low-level Martial Talisman to push Lightning back a distance.
"Alright, the game ends here." Xu Feng flipped his heavy sword into a light golden short bow.
Lightning thought this was bad news but still didn't believe that a low-level disciple at the Qi Refining Third Layer could shoot him down with one arrow. Tightening his Sword Aura, he charged forward; they were now very close, and once he got in range, there would be no opportunity for long-range attacks.
His speed was quick, but Xu Feng was not slow either; this wasn't his first time shooting an arrow at close range. As soon as Lightning moved, Xu Feng's figure floated backward while a dark arrow shot out.
The freshly forged iron arrow glowed with the white light of Golden Element Power as it streaked toward Lightning's chest like a meteor. Lightning had anticipated this but found it too fast; he raised his sword to block.
Clang! The arrow pierced through the long sword and drove deep into Lightning's chest. Through the hole created by the long sword, Lightning saw Xu Feng's radiant smile and couldn't believe it. The arrow had lost much of its force by being deflected by the long sword but still severely injured Lightning.
"It's such a hassle. One or two silver coins for an arrow, do you think it's cheap?" Another arrow was nocked onto the cold bowstring.
Lei Pi was already too exhausted to fight back; he could run, but he lacked the courage to escape. A black arrowhead gradually enlarged in his vision, and finally, with a "thud," it pierced through his forehead, disappearing into the endless night.
As Lei Pi fell, a shadow arrived just in time, witnessing Lei Pi's head smashed like a rotten watermelon and Xu Feng's innocent smile. Cao Lei screamed as if he had seen a ghost.
"Quick, stop him! We can't let him get away!" Jiang Bei's voice echoed from afar.
Cao Lei snapped out of his daze and darted off into the distance.
"Huh?" Xu Feng initially thought that Cao Lei was an easy target, but unexpectedly, Cao Lei's sudden dash was astonishingly fast. No wonder Jiang Bei was left far behind. The original plan was for Xu Feng to deal with Lei Pi while Jiang Bei and the others handled Cao Lei. However, although Cao Lei wasn't particularly strong, his ability to escape was exceptional.
In the blink of an eye, Cao Lei was already over a hundred meters away. Fortunately, Heiya Mountain was a mine with few trees, and since Xu Feng was situated at Arrow Meridian with exceptional eyesight, otherwise, it would have been impossible to spot Cao Lei's shadow in the pitch-black night.
The speed difference was too great; even a normal Refining Qi Level Seven like Xu Feng might not catch up, let alone this freakish Cao Lei. Seeing the distance widening, Xu Feng drew his bow and shot an arrow.
Cao Lei dared not ignore his back completely; while running, he glanced back. That glance saved his life as three pale arrows shot toward him. Cao Lei dodged just in time as the arrows flew over his head, one even grazing his hair.
Cao Lei quickly changed direction and veered left, but three more arrows came flying at him. He hurriedly jumped aside to narrowly avoid them and turned right only to see three arrows following closely behind.
Cao Lei's heart raced as he rolled on the ground to evade again. Now running sideways, he could only see the figure behind him raising an arm before three arrows shot toward him again from a hundred meters away—these were no ordinary arrows. Cao Lei couldn't fathom where this skilled archer had come from.
What started as a straight flight path turned into a curve to dodge the arrows. His occasional glances back became sideways runs; no matter how good his lightness skill was, it took a toll on him.
Yet even so, Xu Feng still couldn't catch up in such a short time; the distance was gradually closing. Finally, in a panic-stricken moment, Cao Lei stumbled over a large rock that had been left behind and rolled twice on the ground, losing three teeth in the process. When he got up to run again, Xu Feng's arrow arrived simultaneously.
This time, misfortune struck Cao Lei as he failed to evade; two arrows missed their mark while the third pierced through his thigh, pinning him to the ground.
Xu Feng didn't have time to catch his breath as he rushed forward. With one swift motion of his blade, Cao Lei barely managed to utter "spare" before his head flew off, ending his life.
Xu Feng was in a hurry to deal with Cao Lei mainly because he was afraid of exposing his Archery Skills. Following him were Jiang Bei and eight others; with so many people around, it was hard to ensure that no information would leak. He certainly couldn't eliminate all eight just to keep his secret.
Aside from the last arrow that struck Cao Lei's leg, the others had all flown away and were difficult to retrieve.
After taking Cao Lei's storage bag, Xu Feng pulled out Corpse Dissolving Water. A white smoke rose from Cao Lei's body, which quickly turned into a pool of blood that seeped into the ground of the Mine.
"Hmm?" With Cao Lei laid to rest, a pair of uniquely designed battle boots remained on the ground.
"High-grade magical artifact!" Xu Feng was overjoyed and hurriedly put the battle boots into his storage bag. No wonder he had run so fast; it turned out they were high-grade magical artifact boots.
A minute later, Jiang Bei arrived with his group.
"Where is he?" Seeing Xu Feng stop, Jiang Bei couldn't help but feel anxious. This was not the time to slack off; if Cao Lei escaped, the New Moon Gate would soon come looking for them.
"Right here," Xu Feng pointed to the ground, revealing a humanoid wet shadow. "I killed him and used Corpse Dissolving Water to dissolve him."
